I am 61, and have endured three separate bouts of Lichen Planus. I was first diagnosed via biopsy in my early 20s. The second bout was in my mid/late 30s. And the third and hopefully final bout was in my early 50s. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Ever.

Oh my gosh you said it, you could do so many videos on this condition! Unfortunately, I have been struggling with this condition for about 7 years. It began on my wrists, then toenails, and then progressed to my mouth, scalp, and vulva. It’s a beast to say the least, especially in the genital area. Thankfully, the actual open lesions have minimized with the help of clobetasol, but we are still working on the scarring and fusing of tissue that has affected any sexual activity in that area and direction of urination stream. I’m so sorry if that is too much info but it has been life changing for sure. I do believe we are making progress in the health of the tissue but I’m not sure what the ultimate outcome will be. I’m just so glad the flares have settled down below because the pain just with urinating brought me to tears. Anyway, thank you for all you do! I have been watching you ever since I was diagnosed with melanoma in 2017. Thankfully, it was removed and so far no other occurrences. Truly, you are such a wealth of knowledge and today I found myself just nodding along with all the information. It really hit home and it is a condition that I find not many people know about and to be honest, talking about the health or lack there of about my vulva isn’t a great conversation starter! 😂So sorry if I wrote a novel, you just really spoke to me Dr. Dray! Again, thank you for all you do! 😊

I have had lichen planus since I was 21. I got it back in 2021 when we were in covid era, it was on my back. I got it again in 2022, this time on my nose and the brown spot is still there although lightning gradually. It came back in 2023 and this time it was a small spot on my underarm and a slightly bigger one on one of my butt cheeks. It happened first time in May, next in July and after that in June. In 2022, however, when i visited my dermatologist she wrote me a vitamin D test for my hairfall ( I have alopecia). The test report identified a vitamin D deficiency with a value of 19. I started getting vitamin D supplements and the condition improved. I have recently found some cases on the internet where good vitamin D levels stopped lichen planus from spreading and sometimes from coming back. I also had a very bad itching once in feb 2023 as i was using minoxidil for my hair and it resulted in dry skin (my skin type is like normal not oily, not very dry) but that itching didn't result into lichen planus. I do have some itch marks there but its regular normal brown spots because as I said it before that itching was bad. Just stating it as you mentioned LP can trigger from damaged/rubbed/itched skin, that wasn't the case for me. Last week, I had my relex smile surgery planned but it was canceled as lasik and related surgeries can affect the eye and one can get severe side effects to the point of losing their sight (if they have ocular LP). I read a research review article about this and informed my eye consultant that I have an autoimmune condition so they canceled the surgery. I haven't got the chance to discuss this with the head surgeon in detail yet. Now the point here is that my vitamin D levels are good currently and I haven't gotten LP this year (I wonder what's the association between two). What if I don't get lichen planus this year and maybe after that as well. If I don't have oral and ocular lichen planus and the skin lichen planus is absent for some span. Is it possible for me to get an eye surgery? How much of a risk it can be to get eye surgery with a skin lichen planus. Would love to hear your thoughts on this Dr ☺

I had to have a skin biopsy at a Korean hospital to find out what I had all of my life. I was then able to tell my aunt what she had all of her life and how to get treated. What you have said, I had to learn the hard way over the past 20+ years. You knew more than ANY dermatologist I have ever heard. I usually have ended up teaching the specialists while they got a second wrong opinion from consults. Thank you for this info to help others.

Thank you for this! I was diagnosed with oral lichen planus almost 20 years ago, and while it hasn’t caused too much discomfort, it requires constant attention. I actually see a board certified dermatologist who also happens to be a board certified dentist (I bet there aren’t many of those around!). I do the swish and spit with tacrolimus followed by topical clortrimazole betamethasone. It’s interesting that drugs like humira and mtx are beneficial. I’ve been on mtx and remicade for years for psoriatic arthritis. 😵‍💫
@Skirkly

I am going to talk to my derm about this swish and spit. It's on my tongue and has required constant attention since august 2023. Had flare ups a few times before same location but short lived. I was wondering if you could see a derm for it if you had it on your tongue because my family doc didn't seem to know much about it and the ENT only offered short course of oral steroids and said that is all he could do for me. I had read about other treatments, but no one seemed to want to listen to me. Ugg.
@MissLee545
@MissLee545 7 месяцев назад
@@Skirkly It’s very hard to find a doctor or dentist who knows much about it. I really lucked out finding a dermatologist who is also a dentist and who specializes in oral lichen planus. If you live in or near a big city where they have teaching hospitals and dental residency programs, that might be the best place to look. Good luck!

What medicine you have taken to treat this?
@pjschmid2251
@pjschmid2251 Месяц назад
@@santoshpandey2756 The only medication‘s that were available to treat it were prescription medication‘s prescribed by my dermatologist. Initially it was oral steroids to calm, the initial, very angry rash, covering all of my lower legs and lower arms. After that, it was topical steroids. Subsequent to that, I’ve just been vigilant about moisturizing any rough patches that could be dermatitis or maybe a minor flare. It’s about the only thing you really can do about it. But if you feel you have this, I would highly recommend seeking out a dermatologist. It needs to be diagnosed by them and required a skin biopsy for them to be certain.

I was diagnosed with Lichen Planopolaris, it started about 4 years ago when I lost all the hair on my arms and legs. I didn’t think much of it, and thought that was a good deal, no longer having to shave. My mother passed away last year and I think it triggered something on my scalp. I have lost over 50% of my hair. Went to local dermatologist, they did a biopsy, said I had this Autoimmune disease… gave steroid shots 2 different times 0:24 to my hairline and both sides of my head. Still did not spur any new growth. Said the LP might burn itself out…Dr gave me the 0:24 name of a specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. Told me to look into Toppers and or Wigs… so unbelievably crushed. Are there any new trials or medications out there for this???

So Stellate Ganglion blocks would work on it. Since it has been proven to improve or ELIMINATE symptoms of autoimmune diseases. It CALMS over reactive immune symptoms. And decrease chronic inflammation. Also, red led near infrared light therapy also decreases inflammation and speeds skin healing.

I have this condition in multiple sites. My best recommendation is a second opinion or third opinion if things aren’t healing. I think I have every site that she mentioned. When it started affecting my scalp, I went to a dermatologist at a reputable clinic and she was doing things that made it worse and told me to ignore it. After about six visits, and a biopsy, I Sought a second opinion. It took that dermatologist less than five minutes to diagnose me accurately. And start treatment before I had large areas of irreversible hair loss. She looked at easily noticeable things like receding, hairline, and eyebrow thinning. I Reminded the other dermatologist about my lipless and asked if it could be part of that, and was told no. So, second opinion Can be critical.

I can't tell you how much this saved me. I've had this relapse/remitting issue with what looks like inverse psoriasis over the buttocks in the fold. I've had this for 20 years. Then, 10 years ago, I developed something that looked like geographic tongue. I also started getting mouth sores. The geo tongue wasn't painful, but my tongue would also swell and scallop. The inverse like issue spread to the groin area. My pcp insisted it was thrush and yeast. Nothing worked. My mom has a history of autoimmune issues, and I kept pressing the pcp to consider inflammatory autoimmune issues. Finally, I have something to present with scientific evidence. Unfortunately there's almost no dermatologists in my rural area, so I just had to go with the PCP. Ahhhh, the American healthcare system.

I was tested and have no Hep C but I have a positive ANA. I take no meds. I have had it on my tongue before same spot and several times, but for a shorter time and did not go to the doctor since it was so short lived and thought I bit my tongue. I used to get those spots on skin that you show at 4:31 white stuff on top of the red spot when I was younger. I had a tongue biopsy in October 2023. OUCH!! I have been under a lot of stress with a spinal issue for the last 1.5 years. THe ENT basically said he can't do anything except give me oral course of steroids and I will see a derm on 1/29 for basal cell skin cancer follow, so I am going to ask her about it.

I’m my 20’s, I l had a huge rash on my right and left thighs. The (bad) dermatologist tested every substance known to man on my skin. I then noticed that I had gone to the gynecologist several weeks before the rash and had started on birth control pills. Rash was THE last side affect listed.

I broke out with itchy brown spots on my neck, seen 4 doctors 1 Dermatologist in 4 months, finally a 2nd Dermatologist said it’s Lichen Planus Pigmentus, and said will go away I. 3 years. I cried as it looks like Sun Spots. He said put bleach cream for 3 weeks and follow up. 1 month later I said the bleach cream doesn’t help I asked why is my hair falling off so much? He said is part of it but he had no time for me and said to reschedule.

Mine showed up at age 30 mostly between my knees and ankles and itched like crazy! I had it for twenty years and it went away when I got rid of the ex husband and stress.

Unfortunately I have oral lichen planus. I was diagnosed about three years ago by my dentist and it has now gotten to the point of bothering me constantly. It’s progressed to a burning and metallic taste in my mouth. I’ve watched many doctors talk about emotional stress being a causation, which I’ve endured for the past several years now. Besides, this issue, I’m healthy at 50, on zero meds and haven’t been, eat basically no sugar. Anyways my question is has anyone tried oil pulling with coconut oil for relief? I do not want to take any meds for treatment. Im also considering carnivore diet for autoimmune healing.

I think my son has this in his nails. Went to a dermatologist years ago and they told him it was a mental health issue like OCD. He refused to ever address it again. 😢it seems to have started after his Dad died suddenly. I’ll try to find a more educated provider.

Good morning Dr Dray! I have a weird question. How much age renew retinol lotion should I apply to the body? I think I apply way too much to cover my body even though I am petite. It would only last me maybe seven times (for the 7oz). Thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I've been diagnosed with lichen planus in the mouth, and also on my lips (right corner). The skin on my lower lip looks like it's peeling off (started like a small circle and got bigger) and beneath is a very soft and sensitive rosy skin. But the strange thing is it's not painful at all, in the mouth and on the lips!!! The dermatologist gave me some cream to apply, and sent me to consult an ORL specialist. The latter gave me more medication, the condition got a little bit better. But now I have a loss of pigment below my lips, like a light spot (I have dark skin). I don't know it this was caused by the medication, which I have stopped. Do you think this can go away on its own and the hypopigmentation will slowly reverse? I really hope you find the time to reply. Many thanks in advance.

I was recently diagnosed with lichen planus. The dermatologists prescribed metronidazole antibiotic for 2 months. Have you ever heard of this being used for LP?

What is the difference between lichen sclerosis and lichen planus?
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 месяцев назад
Lichen sclerosus has a different pattern of inflammation in the skin and leaves it thin in the deep layers, where as lichen planus usually is raised bumps..but there is also lots of overlap between the two

I've been watching you for a few years now on and off. I noticed your lower face looks significantly less wide than when I first started watching you. Can you tell me what helped narrow your lower jaw, and kept your lower face lifted? I hate having that very wide lower jaw. It makes me feel less feminine. I hope I can get your advice!
