Lichtenstein Castle and the Lichtenstein noble family! Military history architecture video - Magister Q Video (2024) (Part 1)
Description:
Liechtenstein Castle is a hilltop castle in Maria Enzersdorf in the Mödling district of Lower Austria. It stands on a rocky ridge at an altitude of around 300 m above sea level and was first mentioned in documents in 1330. The House of Liechtenstein, after which the Principality of Liechtenstein, which it founded, is named, has its ancestral seat there.
The progenitor of the noble family began building the castle around 1130. In the 13th century it fell to other families, and in 1683 it was largely destroyed during the Second Ottoman Siege of Vienna. The Princes of Liechtenstein bought the ruins back in 1808 and restored them in the neo-Romanesque style. Since then it has been owned by the Princely House of Liechtenstein. The castle complex has been the setting for films and literature and is a listed building (list entry).[1]
Location description
Liechtenstein Castle is located south of Maria Enzersdorf on the edge of the former Liechtenstein Landscape Park at about 300 m above sea level on the edge of the Vienna Woods in the Föhrenberge Nature Park, about 75 meters above the center of Maria Enzersdorf. It is built on an extremely narrow rock ridge north of the Kalenderberg, which runs east-west and consists of dark (but light weathering) Gutenstein limestone, Reichenhall Rauhwacke and Steinalm limestone.[2][3]
At the southern foot of the castle hill, in a Baden conglomerate gully on the northeast edge of the Gaaden Basin,[3] stands Liechtenstein Castle, which was built at a later date.[4]
History
Prehistory
Rauchkogel, now an artificial ruin
From the 11th century onwards, a small wooden castle stood on a mound of earth on the Großer Rauchkogel, about 600 metres to the north-west and 20 metres higher than the current site. This hill was surrounded by a rampart and a ditch. After 1100, the site was expanded by the "Lords of Engilschalchesdorf" (today: Maria Enzersdorf).[5]
Castle building
The castle building consists of Romanesque ashlar masonry, which was heavily reworked in the 19th century, partially replaced or plastered over. Some medieval architectural elements were omitted or added. New portal and window openings were created. The three-storey castle building is a mighty, elongated and towering compact structure, the height, width and shape of which refer to the topography and the shape of the rock. The keep adjoins the castle building at the western tip, and a kind of gate tower on the east side. The varied silhouette is determined by the components defined as separate structures in the roof zone around 1900: the southeast side, the chapel wing in the east and the palace and residential tower area. They are each set off from the other components by a hipped roof from around 1900. The windows are relatively small in relation to the large area of the facade and are designed sparingly in the form of slit loopholes, twin windows or with a round-arch frieze at the end. The palace is accentuated by a massive round bay window opened in arcades, which rests on powerful figural consoles under the eaves. The transition between the palace and the keep is formed by an irregular three-sided building, which is set off by a projecting crenellated crown. In this area of the southern facade there is a toilet bay. The northwest side is characterized by projections and recesses of the facade and differently designed window openings, window shapes and gables.[17]
