Check out the data here -- cloud.rockrobo... In this video, I go through a dense vegetation LiDAR dataset captured by the ROCK R2A LiDAR on the DJI M300 drone. See how to generate contours and process your LiDAR data.
Good stuff Harrison, always fun to catch the new videos. How about a video focusing on dense vegetation capture where the goal is to map the vegetation! I'm really curious how well the R2A can capture vegetation structure when the flightlines are not just traditional lawnmower pattern.
Like you said, LiDAR is really useful in these types of environments and it's probably a good idea to give more hints about the correct why to collect the data like speed, scanning patterns, flight planning, etc. Also, at some point, it would be great to get your comments on strip alignment and boresighting using more computational methods (as opposed to visual alignment)
Awesome! I'm new to working with this kind of data and love your videos. Do you know if there are any publicly available drone LiDAR datasets for parts any of the forests in California or other areas or perhaps someone I could reach out too? A friend of mine has started working on some code to conduct a similar analysis, but we don't have a whole lot of data to validate the algorithm with at the moment.
The M300/R2A combo is working amazing for us as well. And overall the cost of the system is pretty reasonable in my opinion. This is definitely an affordable option in the industry. I would like to see a video comparison using LiDar Data and the site supplemented with hard survey in the dense vegetation areas.
How accurate is the L1 for collecting ground points?have you experienced it? I'm using photogrammetry for surveying but the vegetation represents a big limitation. Greetings from Italy
He has a video on that matter from a few weeks ago. We use the L1 at my workplace for scanning various type of fields and it does the job just fine if you're not into big time precision surveying
Hello from Houston, Tx and thank you for this video. I support new build construction projects for my company, and part of our estimates include ground preparation. The question I have is, once we collect the LIDAR data, how can we calculate (A) the volume of trees and vegetation that will need to be removed and (B) the amount of cut & fill material that will be required to prepare the site for construction? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Harrison, just came up to this video. I’m a fellow land surveyors that had taken interest in doing LiDAR for my next project to help me save time and cost. Thank you for the explanation! Since I was new to this field and basically I only learn photogrammetry in my college years and it’s not my expertise, I have one question: How did you get the GCP coordinates, did you do a separate RTK Survey using GPS Receiver or is it included in the drones/it’s attachment? Thank you for the answers!
I am super excited about your channel. I am really hoping you could discuss how your lidar system and the software you use could be geared towards forestry surveying. I am a forestry technician trying to push drone usage in my area.
Have you ever done this with a residential lot or something with structures, and created a line drawing alongside contours? The line drawing is more of something you would do in civil3d, how would you connect those dots?
Hi Harrison, interested to know if it is possible to use LiDAR or other drone carried devices to measure the hardness of the ground and/or detect rocky areas?
Great video, as someone who learns better by seeing something rather by reading. This is a great tool you provide. Can I ask, once the contours have been generated and all is completed. How do I download a deliverable file to the client? Thanks and can’t wait for the facade video? Will it show how we rotate the R2A on the m300?
great video as always! do you take check shots throughout the site to compare the lidar data to the ground data other than the gcps or do you just use the gcps as ground checks? thanks!
Hey Harrison, yup this is exactly our typical site we fly at Alliance (Atlanta). Curious, can you list the flight settings (speed, altitude, overlap, etc) for this mission? Want to compare to our settings and possibly adjust. just flew 100 acres of super dense trees/vegetation w/dual grid and looks like we'll get enough ground points for 1ft contours. THANKS!!!!!
How accurate/reliable is capturing a river bed (beneath the water)? Results you've seen at various depths? I'm using a Livox Mid-40 on a DJI Matrice 600.
Good morning @indianadrones. The program used to process the data and, above all, classify it seems simple. Can you give me information about it and how to acquire it?
Nice simple explanations. Would be interesting to see how the software and distinguish between vertical layers in the point cloud, such as separating ground from shrubs from trees.

Have seen a few streams and rivers on your surveys. Would love to see how you'd go about mapping a stream/river bathymetry. How accurate it is through the water and how well the data cleans up.
@@IndianaDronesyou are welcome. I work in river restoration, and am trying to show my organisation the benefits of LiDAR. I've read that some data is collected through water and saw on this video that your point cloud seemed to show the surface of the water but your topographic model showed what looked to me to be a river channel. I know that plane mounted LiDAR is used along the coast but was wondering how capable drone mounted options were. I'm specifically interested in the DJI L1, but would be extremely interested to hear any insight you have.
In our tests with the L1 and R2A on identical flight paths/parameters. I measured the width of a conductor and it was. 3" vs 9" I mostly stopped testing with the L1 after we verified the results. A real simple recommendation would be to fly slow/low and do your calibrations every 100 seconds with the L1 for best results.
Please make a detailed explanation of data processing and the best programs in data processing as well as about meanders in sand dunes resulting from the movement of cars, how to be processed in an accurate way
I would love to see how can you use Lidar to Estimate the yield of different plantations, such as citrus for example, I wonder if someone has an idea about any software who helps read the data for yield estimation ?!
