I love this music and the ballet. I am playing the piano in this film...(1973). We of the NYCB were in Berlin to film a number of Mr. B's ballets! This was one of them. My du-partner (Gordon Boelzner) and I recorded the music with the singers a few days before the filming. That was a task....but we did it!
What a joy to see Patricia McBride, Violette Verdy, Kay Mazzo, and Karin. This was a few years before I started going to NYCB, and I missed seeing some of these dancers - but McBride was still dancing for years and was my above all favorite. I don't think I ever saw her in thiis. Wonderful. Thank you for posting this. A shame that now Martins' dancing will be forever followed by the shadow of his later life as indicated by comments below. I always loved his dancing. I don't think I ever saw him do this ballet. Oh, I hope you find the other clip. The music is enchanting.
This film company made a mess of a few of Mr. B’s ballets. Some are better than others, but the unnecessary panning and zooming, not to mention the idiotic shot through the candelabra puts this one at , or near the bottom, imo. Still, it brings back happy memories of seeing it in live performance. For that, I thank you, markie! If it weren’t’ for you and John Clifford, we wouldn’t have any of these on YT.
I am hoping, perhaps against hope, that markie polo still has access to the second clip in the set, because I won't be able to get to New York City for the 2019 performances, and I adore this first and the third clips that are available here. ☺
i saw this when i was 17 with and fell in love with it. thanks for posting. but don't u have the second part. i only find part one and three. thanks in advance
Thank you markie polo! Always wanted a recording to remind me of the choreographic details of this piece (too easily forgotten when blended into the atmosphere). Too bad the cameraman was so amateur..
