Shooting the point is described with the zorn hau however the pictures show it in shielhau hand positions. There are a couple structural things the schielhau has differently, ex: your hand is on the right of the sword giving it different pressure but wrath cuts can be modified to do many things. If there are physical attributes you know about that make you pick the squinter over other cuts feel free to share them.

The series is now switching to the sections showing the techniques. I know some of the images don't line up. I also don't have the ability to be with other HEMA practitioners. The other fencer is someone who lives with me not someone who practices. I'm grateful they agree to be hit a bunch.
Series Info:
Due to social distancing I'm going to make a series going through the verses of the Zettel for my students to use as a reference. The Zettel is the series of cryptic verses written by Johannes Liechtenauer to his students(1400s). It would become the foundation of the German combat system lasting over 200 years.
In my opinion the Zettel and the treatises from it are a series of advanced techniques written for people who can already fight with a sword. Therefore these videos as well are not made to be an in depth trainer for beginners but just going through the idea behind each verse.
These are my interpretation at the moment but as we develop, grow and learn, ideas can change. Feel free to disagree with me and try out other interpretations. My goal is to make very short and precise videos for one or two verses. Because of this there will be lots of information and details that don't make the cut.

This was a really helpful video. I spent some time this summer trying to figure out how the schielhau was superior to other cuts (admittedly with little research). I found that it allowed for alternate follow-up motions to a long edge cut. But I totally missed the "shooting" position applications. Thanks for these videos. Really enjoying them.

Thanks! Glad it could help. There was a third element that I hadn't fully tested, but when you make a standard high cut your wrist is with the short edge pushing downward, but in a Squinter your wrist is on the flat pushing left to right. This "theoretically" would give you more pressure into their sword making it easier to take the center line.

@@superiorhema Sorry for the very delayed responses here, hah. That is a really interesting point. It would allow you to keep the edge aligned when moving into a thumb grip left ox as well. Which is less important with blunts since they don't bind well. I haven't made it through your entire Zettel series yet. I'll avoid commenting on each one unless I have something useful or a real question. Cheers.

I love the schielhau... but as a leftie I don't get to use it with my dominant hand all too often. The mechanics just don't pop as well. And in my off-hand, it doesn't feel quite right, either.

Same understanding, same problem with Schielhau. In the understanding of KDF that takes Vor and Nach as the priority, 5 cuts have their own reason to be the top 5 techniques on the 17th list. Scheiteler has the greatest upper advantage, Krumphau has the greatest side advantage, Zwerhau helps you maintain your Vor, and the quality of Zornhau decided your shortest board of the barrel called the ability to achieve Vor. But Schielhau? Even all the ways of Schielhau works, it seems not as important as the other 4 cuts.

You mention schielhau outextends a long edge cut, so what would be a reason to do an oberhau as a first strike or reaction instead of using the squinter?

Good question. You could, if you wanted to, make the schielhau your default onset cut. Where a long edge Oberhau still gets its usability is in its versatility and familiarity. Using the long edge gives you access to other groups of techniques. Its far easier to turn an oberhau into a Krumphau to your left. However it could be easier to Krumphau right if you started a shielhau. They all allow connecting different things easier. Also the further your sword gets from you, the weaker the "weak" of the sword will be. Some people who are safe fencers can use that easily and break your shielhau, but "against the buffalo.." who charges in unsafely it will work more often. Cutting into long point as opposed to the "shooting" position can give a more even bind against those safe/smart fencers. I've also seen people make shielhaus and have the sword pop out of their right hand. That safety of have both palms bracing the sword in a long edge cut is good if you get forced on the defensive and have to parry instead of cut. You have that natural feeling in your cut to rely on. Hopefully this gives you some ideas to start you on that question.
