There are so many widely held Lies and Myths surrounding Micro Four Thirds ( M43 ) camera systems. Its time I addressed them and showed the PROOF. After 40 years I am saying so long to my Nikon gear and embracing the new, the light, the fast and the mirrorless but not until I share the critical differences and clear the air of the nonsense.

Thanks mate. Nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about, talking about what we want to know. I have a unique perspective. I started on Zennit in 1989, and gradually dropped photography in the ensuing decade as my gear was eaten by the tropics (Darwin, NT, Australia. The loss of my bellows was nearly too much). I then picked up a Nikon 3000, then a 3200 between 2012 - 2014ish, but never really took to digital for some reason. I'm into macro wildlife, and going from the Helios 50mm hand ground lenses (with extension tubes... never could afford a dedicated macro lens) to Nikon kit lenses was just a massive disappointment. Not that I didn't get some excellent shots, but the result was never quite like the celluloid product. Probably to be expected, but I have always worked on a slim budget, and that's how it was. This year, 2019, I happened upon a second hand Olympus OM-D EM-5 mark 2. OMFG. I started with a 25mm prime, and fell in love, it was just like my old Zennits (yes, I'm a romantic). Recently I did a trip to far north Queensland - the rain forests. Armed with the Em5 ii, the Olympus 60mm macro, and a $35 AU ring light, I had the most rewarding and spectacular time I have ever had with a camera. That is my experience. With those monstrous gaps in my knowledge and the pace of photographic tech, I have been completely bamboozled, then confused, then frustrated at the amount of BS I have seen, pretty much boiled down to "megapixels" and sensor size relationship to image quality - like, how many confused / malinformed / misinformed / ignorant / over simplified and misunderstood concepts can be thrown into the proverbial photographic enthusiast pot? FFS..! So, thank you. Thanks for taking the time to call out the BS, and for putting yourself out there, and ESPECIALLY for allowing little 'ol me the opportunity to provide this long winded, yet cathartic whinge. Cheers bro. Have a good one.

First time viewer and appreciate the down to earth presentation that is also technically accurate; something that is woefully missing on many sites. Thanks for the intro to four thirds and the current olympus cameras. I have shot Nikon for 47 years after a 4x5 Speed Grafic and a Rolleiflex. I continued with the Nikon into the digital age due to the compatablity of using all the older nikor lenses. I have large hands and bigger digital SLRs with battery grips work as a plus for me as I enter my 80's. I tried an olympus but I couldn't hold them steady. As a compromise to weight I now also shoot with a Fuji XT2 with a bttery grip. A great camera that some of your older viewers may want to review. I also have a Fuji 100 f that I am trying out with a hand grip.

Thank you for this excellent video. Since the advent of the 20 Mpx sensor (which gives so much better image quality than the 16 Mpx one that preceded it), I am a convert to Micro Four-Thirds. So much so that I am selling a bunch of my Nikon gear and keeping only a couple of full frame cameras and a few lenses for situations that really warrant the larger sensor. I have the 40-150 mm Olympus lens, along with the 75 mm f 1.8 and the Panasonic Leica Nocticron 42.5 mm f1.2 (my camera is a G9), and I am astounded by their optical qualities. I have no complaints regarding either their sharpness or their rendering. Just one point, with regard to depth of field, there is a two stop difference between full frame and micro four-thirds, not one as you say in the video. This may be an advantage in some situations, e.g. macro work, but it does mean that control over depth of field is more limited than with larger sensors. This is a matter of physics. Also, you are perfectly right about the effective apertures of lenses with regard to exposure. The light gathering argument is usually wheeled out with regard to total noise within the image. I am not qualified to say what effects this has in the real world, I just know that I am satisfied with the noise levels I get from my Panasonic G9.

Thank you for you valuable and down to Earth Comparison. I am a hobbyist and currently own 5 Cannon Bodies and a wide collection of Cannon lenses ( many of which remain tucked away and rarely used in a cabinet ).These rarely used lenses in this rarely opened cabinet put me in mind of a gun locker that some folks own which contains a large array weaponry that would only be used in the event of an invasion. At any rate I am contemplating cleaning the cabinet ( simplifying life.. down sizing ) and your video has truly assisted me in finally reaching that decision, and sticking with it for better or for worse. I certainly agree with all the responses that you have alluded to regarding full frame vs 4/3 ...Thank you again for your time and info.

You did a totally respectable job presenting very valuable information. I have become very impressed with the Olympus line of cameras. I personally use another brand that takes it on the chin routinely, Pentax. I’m shooting with full frame K-1 Mark II’s. Exceptional cameras which get very little love from the mainstream reviewers. Too bad they never want to talk about the stellar image quality the K-1 Mark II produces. I feel the same can be said about the micro 4/3 products, especially Olympus. They produce stellar images just like my Pentax and receive very little recognition. As I get older, I can see the advantages micro 4/3 has to offer. I really want to thank you for debunking the myths that continue to circulate almost unchallenged. Great video and I’m now a subscriber to your channel.

Good for you ! I still have my OM1 - OM2n and OM4 . Bought those because at the time they were smaller than Nikon, Canon, Minolta. Maybe Pentax came closest in terms of weight / size. Skipped photography for 20 years and bought a D700 . Use it mainly for events , sports or wildlife with a Tamron 300mm F2.8 or Nikkor 80-200 F2.8 , Nikkor 135 F2dc . And for macro with the Tokina 100mm F2.8 . Wanted also the OM-D , however went for the Fuji X-pro2 and use that one mainly for streetphotography with the 23mmF2. As for goin' to the Z-mount , for me no option since most of my gear or D-lenses ( don't like the G lenses for lack of diafragm-ring ) . Surely I struggle when travelling when using my Nikon , but many times it has payed off , since in macro I do prefer a normal viewfinder over an electronic one . I guess that every camera has its place and use . The day that I can shoot pictures with a small camera and have the same results as with my FF Nikon , I will be changin' everything . The latest Sony A7r comes in mind , but I would have to use it for a couple of months in order to compare fully.

Oh yes, well I may have commented earlier because I watched this over a couple evenings (It was that good).. but I've come full circle - Old Olympus, Old Nikon, New Nikon, fooled around with New Leica and darned if after all these years I didn't come back to Olympus. It is really a fantastic system that I'm quite enamored with. The size, the weight, the fit, the features and the quality it all just works and feels good. Maybe because I'm older now it's feels better to carry Olympus gear vs. carrying that big Nikon stuff but I feel smarter now that I'm shooting with Olympus. Good inspiring report on the OMD here and I'll be looking to see more photography talk here soon I hope.

Well done side-by-side. I moved to the Olympus MFT platform in 2013 and have remained there since. I had been eyeing the M1-III but then, firmware 3.0 indeed brought me a new camera in the Mark II. I had been disappointed that Olympus was not pursuing a full-frame format, mainly due to the fact that I do want to have the option to shoot in lower light without adding light (or unable to light the scene). I have since rationalized and now regularly accomplish low lighting settings using unthinkably low shutter speeds which are offset by the camera's amazing Image stabilization. If the scene is still, I don't hesitate to shoot hand-held images at 1/25 shutter speed!

Another nice relaxed video delivery. Thanks. Didn't mention the four thirds different squarer aspect ratio. That was one of the biggest loss issues when I sold my Oly E-300 and had to rely on the APS in my Nikon's, with there restrictive hight in wide angle views.

Its perfectly sensible that you want a lighter camera because of your situation. But you're being a bit emotional implying that everyone using larger sensors has overspent and have no need to shoot that way. If someones just a portrait photographer for example then I would agree results from the smaller sensor will be perfectly fine. But for more demanding tiers of photography the bigger the sensor the better. "Pixel peeping"is not a negative or derogatory term. Its something people who care about absolute image quality do. Telling them theyve wasted money is nonsense. A mate of mine thought the results he was getting were fine - until the day he sat down with me at my computer so l could edit and make an A2 print of a once in a lifetime fish he had caught when we were out fishing. 2 weeks later his olympus was sold. I know what he'd say if I told him he'd wasted his money. It just depends on what the individual wants from their photography - its not for someone else to judge.

You are 100% correct. Lies about MFT. The exposure is the same between MFT and FF. And truthfully I can not see noise in my Micro Four Thirds images at all-maybe just a hint in the most underexposed parts if I look for it. And another advantage no one mentions-a 1:1 MFT macro is double the magnification of a FF. The 2x larger image works at both the distant and the close distances. For example my 35-100 f/2.8 lens is listed as .1x maximum magnification. But in FF terms, that's .2x. In other words a 1:1 MFT macro camera lens images an area of 13mm x 17mm. Much closer than 24mm x 36mm. The higher pixel density translates into fantastic moon photos. MFT has all the advantages over FF. And no disadvantages.

Great, candid video. It really is a comparison between full frame DSLR cameras and micro four thirds mirror-less systems, not just Nikon vs Olympus ( just to make it clear). I happen to have Nikon gear as well, and just bought smaller m4/3 Panasonic gx85. I am impressed by the ease of use and good image quality of the smaller system. It is on me most of the time, and that says a lot, however, I am not selling my D810. When I am committed to a serious shoot I never regret taking the full frame camera along. Its not just the smaller versus bigger, there is a different look that full frame offers that I am becoming increasingly aware of. I am not a bokeh fanatic, but it is nice to have shallow depth of field easily available as an expressive tool. You can buy fast Olympus or Panasonic lenses, but that would mean selling a system that clearly produces better results in order to justify new purchases. I also find prices for wide angle micro four third's lenses very expensive, I didn't know that when I bought the gx85. The choice between these two systems should also take into account one's personal photography style. I can easily live with both systems, maybe upgrade to a full frame mirror-less Nikon one day. Having said that, if I was to start fresh the choice would be very hard.

A fine intro to a marvellous camera, for sure. I own it myselt, and am very content with it. BUT you did state the DOF of a m4/3 camera equals a one stop brighter "Full Frame" one. Like as if a FF camera at F:4 would equal a m4/3 one at F:2,8, DOF wise. It´s actually a two stop difference: The DOF at F:2,8 on a m4/3 = the DOF of a FF at F:5,6. This is undisputed, so not put here as material for discussion or debate, it´s just the way it is. Not being a "physicist" myself, as someone below noted there are too many of around on photo forums, but simply had to correct this. Anyway, the fact ,still, is that one can easily, in most situations, achieve a "shallow enough" DOF with a m4/3 kit, just not as easily the often(to my eyes at least) bad looking extremely thin/shallow DOF some people seem to adore.

Very interesting video. I have had Oly glass and still own a film OM1, with magic 50 1.4, naturally manual focus. Has taken the best images, with my very limited and flat image ability and using magic slide film. Move forward to digital, move to Canon. My often used 70-200 2.8, just failed after taking less than 2,000 shots !! Cost of repair would have exceeded cost of the new lens + the also L series 24-70 2.8, which as you rightly mentioned in context of the Nikon, stays on my Canon 6D body all the time. Not happy with the failure of that very expensive L series lens. Looked at Oly bodies as the Sony fanboys, maybe the world over, by certainly in Melbourne where I live, have destroyed the 2nd hand market for mint Oly bodies and lens ( second hand). Saw the mega value in replacing the Canon lens I have used most of the time, but can't as cannot afford to replace the 2 v expensive L lens, and have seen the fantastic value for money offered by new or near new Oly bodies and lens such as you mentioned + the most underrated lens in the world, the 12-40 2.8 Pro. Buy one of these and even new body and you are basically set to go, full stop. Superb travel kit. Sony has been conning the world into thinking that you need a 100 mp body to take shots with top IQ- rubbish. I have been taking photos with the older version of what is now the Fuji XF with a 16mp sensor for years. Use it as compact sort of point and shoot. From RU-vid videos I am certain have been viewed by viewers of this channel, it appears that Olympus sales are bordering on the negligible. Only the company can state with certainty how many new bodies they are selling, but it seems the sales are fading. This post is really a long-winded way of saying that Olympus OM bodies and glass represent exceptional value for money at the moment and that in choosing a body with a 16mp sensor ( realise this has increased but the cost has really shot up and not sure why as sensor costs are now so much lower) does not relegate users to producing inferior quality images.

Yes, the OM2 was even more legendary and did not weigh more. John Abraham, the famous photographer used only Olympus for his Life and Nat Geo photography. He didn't need anything else. He was an Indian from India who later became an American citizen but he was a legend in his time too. Maitani, the little camera wizard put everything into those cameras and lenses. I even remember that the OM2 could meter for about 120 seconds exposure. No other camera of that time could do that. My old trusty Nikon F3HP's with MD drives weighed a lot more I remember comparing. And in those days we carried at least 3 bodies anyway. One for each emulsion. B\W, Colour neg, and Colour transparency. Thank God I was younger.

I'll admit... some of y'all on youtube kind of pushed me into the m43 direction! I'm getting my first m43 kit tomorrow. Olympus OM-D E-M10 III... not getting rid of my APS-C or 35mm film gear, just want a neat little system for street shooting and interiors with less bulk. The kit does feature the 14-42mm zoom, but I also included a 17mm f1.8 to go with it. TBH, I actually was considering this camera a year ago when I got my first mirrorless camera, a Sony a6300. I put in about $2k or so in 2019 for that rig, and it's worth it. But I guess I miss having some Oly gear... owned a sweet OM-2 setup years ago. Also, I enjoy the challenge of shooting with smaller stuff... anyone remember the Pentax 110 SLR or those tiny Rollei 35's from the film era? I still plan on scoring a FF rig digitally in the near future, but that will likely be mirroless (and probably a Sony for obvious reasons :) ).

I don't have endless funds but have used Nikons (d3200, d3300, d7100) with the sigma 150-600c and Nikon 200-500 and a canon 70D with the 400mm 5.6L prime. The canon was reasonable to hike around with for my shooting style but the Nikon 200-500, while the VR is exceptional, was too much for me to enjoy hauling for hours at a time. I just picked up a Lumix G85 and Olympus EM1 mkii. I don't have a good long lens yet, just the 75-300 mkii. I look forward to getting the PL 100-400 or Olympus 100-400. I can't afford the 300mn f4 which I would love to have. These cameras are amazing tools. The 16mp sensor of the g85 is enough for what I need and the cameras are very innovative. I got the Olympus macro lens and STF-8 flash and look forward to the spring to use the focus bracketing and focus stacking options. Also, live composite on the Olympus for lightning photos! I hope JIP does good things with Olympus. I also hope that Panasonic going full frame doesn't kill of their micro43 line. If anything, maybe it will make them a stronger company. Lots of changes in the camera industry right now and 2020 was a rough year but I'm hoping the future of micro 43 is bright. Full frame has a place but I don't have the wallet for it nor the space in my bag. I enjoy m43 for my needs.

Welcome to the OM family. You must review the new Olympus post production software ( for OM-D Owners) that you can DL for free on the Olympus site, just release this past year, has a lot of the features like the Art filters that are also found in the OM-D cameras . You might want to add the battery grip giving you double the battery life and more buttons for programming. After using the camera for sometime the menu system layouts can be confusing and should be upgraded for easier use. The pluses for me of the camera is retro design to its Olympus OM film camera with similar button layout, lighter and smaller lenses, IBIS, Peaking focus to use with vintage manual focus lenses with an adapter, silent shutter.Small size body and lighter weight, 10+ years being mirrorless development tech. Lower price for a total system camera. Other OM-D models to choose from.

Hui, at the first sight I thought you were Jeff Schewe 😳😂 All the reasons and facts you named made me change to the Olympus MFT system a few years ago and I‘m still very satisfied with it and foremost with the results it delivers. I came from Nikon to Canon and then, with the appearance of the first E-M1 I changed to Olympus, and now I’m a very happy user of the mark II mentioned in your video. The only thing I dislike are the f**** long names of the cameras and the other stuff 😉 Best regards Robert

I'm also nikonless now after switching to olympus. The low weight means I can carry a camera with me with high quality glass more often than I could with my Nikon. Also, the Olympus 75mm prime is a game changer. The image quality is by far better than anything I have ever shot with. If you don't have one, get one, you won't be sorry. For product shots, you can even use the high res mode and that lens and get resolution even pixel peepers would drool over.

I'm another Nikon shooter that switched to Olympus! Seems like a common path :) I had a Nikon D500 and had rented the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 for a trip to the mountains to get some wildlife photos. The combination gave me some great images, but it also weighed about 7 pounds, which got old walking around a mountain side at 14k feet! I now have the e-m1 mk2, the 12-40 and 40-150 pro lenses. They're small and light enough to carry with me pretty much all the time.

Unfortunately, they discontinued the Pen line, which I like and the new models seem to be getting bigger and heavier, which I don't like. If cameras keep getting bigger and bigger, I'll probably just use my phone.

Appreciate the video. I use a GH5 for (mainly) stills. I have the 12-35 II and to my eye it's absolutely sufficient in terms of sharpness. I get frustrated by youtube personalities slating M34 on the basis ''everyone'' wants to shoot at very low aperture and ''everyone'' is shooting indoor sports. Both of those are niches. For static subjects, the IBIS allows low ISO and, again, using F6/7 etc.

Olympus is excellent,period,and I had shot with one for years.I stepped my game up to APS-C and now FF,so i enjoy the flexibility of being able to come down to the next format.I am not worried about size and weight,and my FF camera is basically a cinderblock which takes pictures,yet since I am a grown man,carrying around a camera makes no difference to me.I guess if I was weak,had back/shoulder issues,and might care,yet once I got a Peak Design System,It feels just right.I am someone who walks a lot,hikes,and climbs,etc,etc,so I am used to some weight.Now when it comes to that Olympus EM-1x,that camera is not light anyway,so the only advantage might be the size,not being as large as something like the Nikon D850.The weird part is,with the new firmware update,is there really a great reason to spend $3000 on the Em1X???Like I said,i am not missing anything from any format because I already shot with 3 out of 4...

I also use Nikon and Olympus. I went digital with Olympus with the E-1 and the D700 with Nikon. At the moment I have the E-M1 Mk2 and the D810 and Z6 and, last year, I tested similar uncropped scenes printed at 30" x 20" from both cameras and it was impossible to tell the difference, even by the pros at our camera club. Certainly, a bigger, higher-res sensor give you more leeway to crop but I try to frame my photos properly when shooting and don't rely on cropping for my shots. My Oly gear never ceases to amaze me, way lighter, way smaller, weather-resistant, outstanding quality glass, amazing features and outstanding output. Here's a link to an album I made where I showed my print test of both cameras. facebook.com/pg/alanrphotography/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1158015684338778

MFT, and smaller sensors in general, do tend to have more noise at a given iso, in a given generation of technology. What often gets missed is that, to have a kit of a similar price/size/weight in full-frame, and even in some APS-C systems, you'd have to use slower lenses, and a higher iso, and you'd give up that advantage. If I was doing nothing but food/product photography, and my gear was always on a stand, in a studio, maybe I'd find some value in bigger cameras with bigger sensors. As someone who shoots wildlife and outdoor portraits, I like Olympus.

First video I watched by you and I liked it very much, you're easy to listen to, good info and no rambling! Well done! I switched from a Nikon D700 to an Olympus OM-D E-M5 2012, then an E-M1 and later an E-M1 Mk II. I recently switched the E-M1 Mk II for a Panasonic G9 before this summer due to issues with the E-M1 Mk II and, unfortunately, bad/no help from Olympus Sweden, that doesn't mean I am done with Olympus though, we'll see what they put out in the future as I am invested in their superb glass (12-40 F2.8, 40-150 F2.8, 300 F4, 60mm Macro, 45mm F1.8). I suggest you take a look at the Panasonic G9 as well if you have any interest. It's very much like an E-M1 Mk II but with better display, EVF and some other nice stuff (though some stuff missing as well like live comp). 60fps RAW like the Olympus or 20fps RAW and tracking AF so both cameras are very much neck in neck. Both are superb picture taking machines and m43 is a superb system, small lenses build to the very best standards both optically and mechanically as well as weather sealing. Anyway, enough rambling from me, again, well done! /Rasmus

I'm a bit torn about MFT vs. FF. I have an Olympus Pen F and a Sony A7 (the "original" model), and they both have their pros and cons. The biggest difference in image quality boils down to dynamic range (better low-light performance of the FF sensor, combined with better highlight retention thanks to Sony's DRO mode) - everything else is not visible unless you pixel-peep! When it comes to handling, the Pen F wins hands down. Modern (AF) glass? A big win for MFT (both Olympus and Panasonic) - I have only the standard (kit) zoom for my A7, while I have a bunch of rather affordable Olympus primes. With "old glass", on the other hand, having a full-frame sensor is a plus - but if you are not into historic lenses, this won't matter (I can get great results even with the basic Olympus primes). Sometimes I think I should completely switch to Sony FF, but then something doesn't fit and I want to go MFT only (maybe buy a G9) … until I put some old Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan on my A7 and fall in love again with what I get … then I put an old 135 mm Voigtländer Super Dynarex on my Pen F and enjoy having a rather tiny (and cheap) 270 mm equivalent telephoto lens … I can't decide, so both stay!

I agree with a lot of your points. I own the E-M1 II myself. But having used both full frame and M4/3 (as well as APS-C cameras) I have to say that full frame has its advantages. I personally did not see myself using them enough to justify supporting a bigger, more expensive system and sold my full frame gear. But that doesn't mean that these advantages does not exist. Way better low light performance, shallower DoF (if the photographer wants it), just to name two. And bigger size or price does not change that.

I think the weight thing is very important. I have thought about moving from aps-c to full frame but what really stops me is the size of the lenses and the cameras. Some very interesting thoughts Bob. Is there a point where you think the D850's higher res would still make a visible difference say in a poster size print? Have any other photographers in your circle made the switch to MFT?
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
The D850 is a great camera. I would say that at a poster size and a proper viewing distance it would be very hard to tell the difference. Pixel peeping would reveal a drastic difference. So the question is, how many prints are going to be larger than a poster. What are you shooting ? Do you need to crop ? Is size and weight an issue? How about speed and maneuverability. Do you need to carry a lot of glass for assignments o projects in the field? There are a lot of factors to seriously consider including your budget.

@ Unsung Photographer, i´ve seen great Portraits taken with the OMD-EM 1 MK 2 and published in a Book in BW. It was an excellent Photographer. On the technical side, you´re right saying that 2.8 is 2.8 not matter the size of the sensor. Looking at deep of field, you´re missing two not one stop compared to Fullframe. Talking about noise, it´s always a balance between shutterspeed, ISO and the amount of light. What you didn´t mention is the resolution. If you have to similar sensors, one Fullframe and one M4/3 with the same Resolution the M4/3 is two stops behind Fullframe. Just look at a Nikon D5 what it can do with noise and dynamic range and compare this to your Olympus. M4/3 tried to overcome the gap by innovative technology. Fact is that the M4/3 Sensors now are a few years old while Fullframe companys like Sony are innovating at a high pace. So Fullframe is not an overpriced M4/3 camera, it plays in a different league. Especially if there is only available light and you are not in a Studio Environment.

I love photography as much as the next guy, I picked up the EM-1 Mark 1 as I was younger I bought the GH4 once but was disappointed in the video performance of it (I know big mistake) But at the time there were better machines, Samsung NX1 which I still own today, never selling that one its amazing. Anyway, I got the Olympus with two lenses for 500 euros and Christ what have I been missing out on? Frankly its great, I shot a lot of DSLR in my life but as long as you have good light and fast lenses, the image quality is the same, I used to pixel peep a lot, was like a disease but who pixel peeps when looking at images in regular time though? Very few, Whats amazing is that Olympus actually had a F2 zoom lens 28-70mm full frame equivalent for the Four Thirds systems, DSLR version of MFT and its about the same size as my Samsung NX1 16-50mm F2-2.8 which in itself is impressive and SMALLER than the F2.8 full frame lens I own. Then there is the Pasonic 10-25mm F1.7!!! Yes you heard me, a ZOOM LENS with F1.7? Unheard of right? Well yes and no, if you are familiar with C-mount popular with 16mm film cameras and CCTV cameras back in the day there multiple F1 - F1.2 - F1.7 zoom lenses, but I doubt they are as good as the Panasonic 10-25mm F1.7 in sharpness though! MFT is great and cost effective, small in size its just the right size before it starts getting too small like Pentax Q series cameras which are super tiny mirrorless, or the Nikon J series 1 inch mirrorless cameras.

Hi there, with respect to the following lenses;- Panasonic Leica MFT 200mm, 50mm-200mm and 100mm-400mm. Having had my lumix G9 for a few months now, my kit lens (Leica 12-60mm) frustrates me with telephoto reach. I know the 200mm and the 50-200mm support the use of the 1.4 & 2x telebooster which in theory gives me a reach of 400mm. But I would to know how the quality of the image is at 400mm for all three. I am minded to go for the prime 200mm as that is 2.8 throughout but I recognise with the added drop of 1 / 2 f stops with the boosters. Does the 100-400 compare well with above? Regards Frank
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
Frank Aldous good question. What I’m using for telephoto on my Olympus is the 40-150mm pro. It is a 2.8 all the way and sharp as a tack. That would give a field of view at the long end of 300mm on a 35. Works for me. I haven’t used and of the extenders. I have a 75-300 4.5 to 6.7 variable that works well in good light but isn’t quite as sharp imho. That would be a 150-600mm.

To clarify my previous comment, let me explain better. APSC and Micro-four-third (M43) cameras are also called crop factor cameras: one could use a Full-frame (FF) camera and cut a section out with Lightroom. You will get the cropped photo to mimic the result of a Crop-factor (CF) camera. However instead using a big camera to crop you can do that with a smaller camera and smaller sensor: M43 was born. Olympus and Panasonic or Fujifilm tell us: use the factor 2 for M43 and 1.5 forAPSC for the focal length for the comparable FF equivalent. However this is half the (commercial) story. We also know that our Depth-of-Field (DoF) is not the same using a Crop-factor camera. To solve this you can use a faster lenses with a lower f/ aperture value. This is what you see these camera brands doing. Fujifilm will launch a 35mm f/1.0 next year. This will give the performance and DoF of a 50mm f/1.4 lens. But for an f/1.0 you need more glass. The weight is the same as for the f/1.4 Full-frame comparable lens. Also the other way around. You can buy a cheaper and slower Full-frame lens and the weight will be less. The aperture conversion factor for M43-APSC is one stop and APSC-FF is one, M43 to FF two stops. There is a third element: ISO. As you were correctly saying Lex, as response to my earlier comment with the aperture one need to compensate with the shutter speed: absolutely! However, with a digital camera you have another option, you can change ISO. This is also an advantage for CF cameras, because the low light performance is usually less good. With a faster lens you capture more light and you can turn you ISO down. With that you also have less noise, perfectly comparable to FF. By the way I am an happy Olympus and Fujifilm user.

What I want to know is, if you need to be shooting at ISO 3200 indoors with a 70-200mm lens on a full frame "to get the shot", what do you do if you're using Olympus gear?
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
GG Stylz the examples of the young dancers is a 3200 iso shot using the 40-150 Olympus pro 2.8. Sensor size does not effect exposer.

Exposure and noise are 2 different things. If your using Olympus gear you'll get noisier images is what will happen . They may still be usable, just not as good.
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
mark rigg I disagree. Full frame is not an absolute defining factor. There are other things that contribute to image quality.
@markrigg6623

Sony @@unsungphotographer3412 Yeah I wasnt trying to imply that sensor size is the only thing that matters. Of course there are other factors that go into the overall performance of a camera. I own 3 cameras that are not full frame because in the right situation there are some advantages. But I do notice their limitations as well. It depends on what the usage is and also different photographers have differing thresholds as to what is acceptable and what isnt. Thanks for the reply.

GG Stylz Sometimes even with FF cameras and a proper exposure you will get noise when lifting shadows. With a crop sensor you’d be running in a bit of trouble. With an even smaller sensor it’d be game over. Therein lies the problem and question, is the pain of carrying heavy gear worse than the pain of not getting the images one wants. If only we could have FF sensors and lenses in a compact size kit.Thanks for your reply.

Great straight to the point video and I agree 100% with you. I shoot with a Nikon D750, a Olympus Em5 mkii, and now Em1 mark iii. I love the M43 system! Some of my best images I've taken have been with my Olympus cameras simply because I always have them with me and they're just plain fun to use. The Em1 Mark III is my newest camera and this thing is amazing: hand held 50mp high res shot, live ND filter built in, pro capture, 7 stops of IBIS, and amazing face/eye tracking.😁 M43 is a fantastic system and I hope more photographers would give it a chance.👍

I have been playing with Olympus & Panasonic Lumix Cameras for years now, the Lumix DC-G9 as my current main, with my mother using the Olympus OMD EM10 MkII, being replaced with the OMD EM5 MkIII soon. We have the Pro 40-150, Pro 14-40, as well as a 12-200 walking around lens, and a handful of other specialties. Twice, I have left Sony to return to M43...

Bob ... i live next to the airport and work on it as a a/c mechanic .... I was hit by the Oly E-M5 years ago. Took the step and advanced until E-M1X a piece of art . Still got E-M1 i , E-M10 , E-M1II .... and once you understand the menu system (that most people hate) then you are assimilated ...and won’t get out . I am sorry you got hit .... and telling the truth .... like i did to so many heavy Pro’s on safaris .... they are just allways too heavy and most of the time too late .

I gave them Pro’s an advice ... Get a cheap O-MD E-M1 for your wife and a 40-150 f2.8 and a 1.4converter and she will get better results than you without all that extension tripod stuff bolted on the car.

I dont know what to think. I'm a Sony A7R2 shooter wanting to switch to Olympus but your examples when you said there was no noise were actually clearly very noise with fixed pattern noise as well. The faint horizontal lines on the blackness. I think I need to use one to know for myself.
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
Colourberry I don’t know how your coming up with that from a video. Go look at the camera. Rent it and try for yourself. Noise is manageable. I am not Sony shooter. I don’t like the ergonomics or the price of glass for pros. My personal choice.
@kamczak89

I have both of these cameras (E-M1mk2 and A7R2) and I find Olympus much more pleasant to shoot with, yet the image of Sony comes out better and needs less post-processing. And EyeAF is sooo much missed on the Oly! I'm torn, as I'd like to have just one system.

c0ldc0ne because the pics in a video suffer from Compression, reduced resolution and RU-vid. I am showing them to provide context. I am telling you the noise levels are very low. I am not here to argue. If you don’t believe me, move on.

Fantastic video! I've read a lot about the future of micro four thirds, and I'm sure it's due to the negative marketing you mention to try and get you to buy full frame. I need to make a decision about a camera format to commit to, and M43 ticks many boxes. What are your thoughts on how enduring this format is likely to be?
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
Sam Blackmore I don’t think that is an issue. I still shoot film and that has supposedly been dead for years. Get what fills your needs. If size, weight and features are important then m43 is a real contender that is very economical. Just compare prices between the Olympus pro 40-150 2.8 to any of the 70-200 glass from the full frame guys.

Great video. I shoot Olympus and Canon full frame and the biggest points really are that full frame sensors gather more information, and light but you pay for that in weight and cost. Also the Nikon system you have is more bullet proof for pro work which is a consideration. The Olympus system is lighter, cheaper but the menu system is overly complex and confusing, also the controls, numbers of buttons don’t suit everyone’s hands. I love the Olympus system but the menu systems really need sorting.
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
Stephen Wratten I strongly disagree about larger sensors gathering more information. That is a wives tale. The Olympus menus are indeed challenging. There is a lot of control and customization available. Ergonomics in my opinion are really good. What buttons cause you issues? Young can assign anything to just about anything.
@maxheadroom7687
@maxheadroom7687 4 года назад
Unsung Photographer give an Olympus to a new photographer and watch them struggle compared to say a Canon DSLR. Too many buttons, dials etc. Just gone through this with lending my son both cameras. Also If you had to shoot for large blow ups your full frame would be the only weapon of choice, why? Because the sensor gathers more information in a less dense way that results in clearer and less noisy reproduction at larger magnifications. As regards cost the real comparison with your Nikon should be the new Oly Pro which is about$4000 here as it has the build of a pro camera, so whilst the omd em1 mk2 is a lot cheaper the build quality is not as good. Horses for courses as they say!
@unsungphotographer3412
@unsungphotographer3412 4 года назад
This is simply not true. I teach my students to start out in manual. Once they have learned that they can shoot any camera in the world without any concern for menu systems. If the menus get you down read the manual. RTFM goes a long way. The sensor DOES NOT gather more information because it is bigger. I print 16x20 all the time. They look great. The OMD EM1 Mark II is a pro weather proof body. The em1x is a specialized camera and both of these models share the Olympus flagship spot. The em1x is a direct competitor to the D5 and is $3000 dollars US cheaper. So your horses have escaped the barn.

Hating the AF on my Pen F so thinking to buy a new EM1 mk2 or waiting to see what the new EM5 brings to the table. Hand holdable high resolution mode would win me over. I remember trying to say Olympus OMD EM5 back in the day 😝 but I loved that camera.

Ha, I am shooting with a new Pen e-pl9 but waiting to see what the new EM5 will be. Hopefully, our wait will soon be over, everyone believes that October, the 100th year anniversary of Olympus, will be the release time. Interesting comment you made about the F. I was so tempted to buy that camera. Only reason I didn’t was because only the black model appears to be available at about $999.00. Didn’t know about the slow AF in the camera. The F’s retro look really appeals to me. Too bad Olympus chose not to support the F any longer. Mark

Mark Mathosian I love this little camera in every way except AF. Low light and anything moving is big trouble. Even in good light where my EM5 rocked this camera will hunt and back focus and just not get a quick lock on.

I too shot Nikon for years. Then the EM1X came out. As soon as I had one in my hand, I knew it was the ideal tool for me. I sold all my Nikon gear and swapped to a pair of EM1X bodies with the appropriate Olympus lenses and could not be happier. No complaints from clients about IQ either.
