As a former Marine, I have nothing but love for the US Navy!! They were good to me!! On my 21st birthday back in 2000, my unit was on the USS Mount Vernon on our way to Okinawa... This LSD had 3 vending machines on it...and in each one...the Captain of the ship had put 1 Budweiser in each one...if you got it...he let you drink it, on the bridge, in the Captains chair!!! Well, two of my buddies, Brown and Tillotson, won the beer...and gave it too me for my birthday... I tell people all the time...anyone can go to Vegas, anyone can get drunk/laid whatever on their 21st birthday... But how many can say they were on the bridge of a US Navy ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, drinking a beer in the Captains chair?? 👍🇺🇸 Semper Fi!

She said it best.."In the middle of the ocean, we make our own water, we make our own power, anddd....we make our own support system" Truer words have never been spoken! I've been retired for 13 years and I still miss being underway! Being in the Navy was a 20+ years adventure. If you finally find your extended family, you hardly notice the hard work and long hours. Man, I love watching Navy videos of life aboard ships and the work you guys do. I spent 20 years in the Army as an Infantryman. I have no regrets, but had this much media been available when I enlisted in the Army, I probably would have chosen the Navy. Looks challenging, rewarding, and like the Army, the Navy has a culture all its own.

A cook on these ships is such an important role that many people probably never think about. A good meal after a hard days work can be such a huge boost to your psychological well being. After doing so much work, dealing with cramped quarters, and being away from home and then having to deal with poor quality food can be crushing to someone, but on the flip side a good meal can make it all worthwhile. Thats not even getting into the nutritional side of things. I don't know much about the Navy, but I bet they train their cooks/chefs well for these reasons.

I served on this ship 2005-2009 when home port was in Pearl Harbor. Good to see my MK 45 still booming! I miss the 50 cals too. Ive done hundreds of pull up on that bar too near the ammo elevator. What a great ship; Good times.

I live near one of the shipyards that builds the Arleigh Burke class destroyers and it's really cool to see these ships come together and then sail off. It's neat to see all the people who worked hard to build them, to keep our sailors safe, and our country defended. Thank you to all who build these ships and all who serve aboard them.

Absolutely tremendous. Years back I was at the USO at Great Lakes met some great sailors at their A school who invited me on a tiger cruise. One was on the Nimitz the other on the Eisenhower, what a wonderful experience. Always wanted to go on a destroyer. Finally got an invite to the Hopper, was to fly to Guam and go to Pearl. Got canceled at the last minute. Really enjoyed this video. Thanks to all the active sailors and retired.

Wow. Look at all that electronics! There's been a few improvements since the early 60's when I was a Fire Control Tech (FTG) on the USS Fletcher DD445. We had tubes & a few transistors in our Mark 25 radar with it's 50 mile range back then. Transistors were just being introduced. The rear 3 inch FC Mark 56 radar had faster electronics than our 5 inch 38 system

The underway video sure brings back good memories for this "old sailor," an AG2(AW), 1981-1988. UNREP, mid-rats, and some of the best sleep in those racks I've every had. Steaming past Bali in the early morning with dead calm seas, mists hanging over the islands. Paradise that most folks never see. Also, steaming past Iwo Jima and Mt Suribachi in the evening during a rain squall, thinking about the men lost to take that rotten piece of volcanic sand. As the young seaman said, "it makes you remember why you're out there."

Destroyers are the infantry in the Navy. They go everywhere, do more than they are designed for, and totally screw anything messing with the task force. Like one person said in the video, they destroy stuff. Fast , maneuverable, and deadly. They are the backbone of the fleet. To serve on one is an experience nobody forgets.

How does that guy have a beard you ask? I was in Zumwalt's Navy when Z-gram 57 came down in 1970 regarding beards being allowed. However, those of us (at that time) who may have needed to wear an Oxygen Breathing Apparatus (OBA) had to be able to get a tight seal where the mask touched the face. So, facial hair was only allowed elsewhere on the face. We liked Admiral Zumwalt and his Z-grams supporting the enlisted personnel. He ordered that "abrasive policies" be eliminated and did not mince words.

@Richard Hunt Not bad for ships hulls built in the late 80s, early 90s. The refits help. The next generation of ship will be amazing. Good crews help. We run a similar crew size as the ones at about 225. It can fluctuate under certain circumstances. The drills, though they can become frustrating, really do help the crews stay ready for anything. And I found that they help with bonding. Though workups could be hell on sleep.

It’s crazy this ship was one of the ships I deployed with in January, one of the best ships I’ve worked with, I talk to many of their OS’s (Operation Specialist) they’re some of my favorite people great ship great people. I work for Carrier Strike Group 9 so this ship essentially belongs to the Admiral in charge of the carrier and they had an extremely tough deployment left in January went to the Middle East and just got back about a month ago. They did a tough job and they made sure to never give it anything less than 100%.
