I know right. I hate half of history are on kings and leaders. Meh god, they are mostly inbred of course they are crazy. I want to know more about the common ppl
Boring? Nah, this is fascinating. When studying history we don't talk much about the "normal" everyday folk who actually did the hard work to build history and how they lived in it, we always just hear about the snotty spoiled rich kids who bossed and bullied them around. Hearing about how many of these pirates and sailors were and behaved like normal folk does a lot to make history feel more alive and relatable, rather than the cold distant circlejerking about one person.
If you’re a sailor which I’ve been sailing since I was nine years old, I’m now 60 my last boat was a Catalina 36. It doesn’t surprise you sailing back then wasn’t much different than sailing today. If you’ve been on long voyages, you’ve moved the life of a pirate on board lots of chores lots of cleaning. Very little sleep so you can keep watch. Yes, I don’t think times have changed much.
I’m so excited to see more videos about daily life aboard a pirate ship! I’m so curious about this topic! One thing I want to know is how much time was typically spent pillaging vs lying around and living off the land.
I’ve been an artist since I was a kid so I’d like to imagine if I was able to join a crew I’d spend my past time giving tattoos (i’m familiar with how they used to give tattoos, it’s actually one of my favorite videos) or coating the ship in a new layer of paint
I fishing, reading, watching live folk music, and drinking with my palls are pretty much what i already do to kill time. A pirate ship sounds like a little dirty haven for me. I have prett bad gallows humour from working dangerous labor jobs
i can imagine sewing became a common past-time. repairing, mostly - making strong stitches, small patches, rolled, sail-making and french seamlines etc. time consuming and very important, but could be done while doing other activities and relaxing. for hard-worn hands, it might even take longer
The fact that you are so eloquently able to make the daily life, the 'boring' life of buccaneer seamen hundreds of years ago sound so fascinating is absolutely why your content is S tier in my opinion.👌 A feather in your tricorn I'd say 😂
I have been in the open seas in the Caribbean and around Central America... and although it may be hot and humid on land, it's very breezy and pleasant out on the water. We would be on shore and sweating bullets then wearing long sleeves out at sea. Though I never experienced doldrums cus the ships had motors, of course. I never roasted in the sun in a dead calm sea. 😂
Great video as always! I really want to learn more games from the time period to kill time accurately. Some of the rules for dice and cards are unnecessarily complicated. I can spend days analyzing political and economic intrigue from the era, but the moment I start reading the rules for games my brain blanks out. Haha
17th century billiard might be the simplest, it was played in Port Royal among other places. Instead of poles you used clubs so it was kinda like minigolf. Billiard tables were also placed outside in backyards, instead of indoors
Youd find me reading, drawing or cleaning. If the maintenance was important to the ship's health, I'd be quite anxious about any slack in that direction! Probably end up cleaning decks, cannons or publicly available small-arms to ingratiate myself to the 'officers'. Probably wouldn't get me any brown-nose points regardless.. 😅 Maybe if I make myself indispensable as 'that one maintenence guy', I'll get to avoid the absolute terror of close combat. This is likely just wishful thinking. Consider me a dead man in this situation! I don't have the heart for this line of work lol
I do not agree with the initial statement and, BUT I can see where it comes from. If you have a life where you are forced to stay on the open sea - then it becomes a prison. But if you use it as a means of transport and go wherever you like ... then it is a means of freedom. So it really depends on how do you use a ship. I am designing my own pirate knife ;D and I will be having a prototype made.
Love the daily life! A a deeper dive into the various activities would be super cool. Would also love to see a video about the Whydah Galley and Black Sam Bellamy!
So, I just paused the video for a moment, pondering the thought "how many of those 30 pirate men were sacrificed to make room for all the bounty they looted"? That'd be less men to have to split amongst, I can see it now......"Bye guys, only got room for half of ya"!
Between the scurvy and the lice they also had to deal with sexually transmitted diseases and a plethora other communicable diseases. Various fevers due to tropical infections and insect bites.
This may be sort of random but what font do you use for your quotes/thumbnails/text? I quite enjoy it and would like to use it in my novel. (that is, if it's not copyrighted, because unlike the pirates I write about I do not have a seafaring vessel worthy enough to evade the lawmen in.)
Quite an easy life compared to the Navy or the dreaded Merchant service. On the big ships, such as those operated by Roberts, with a crew of 200+, you had plenty of free time 😉
How did the daily life differ between officers and crew, I know that mixing between officers and men was discouraged on warships/merchants but with pirates’ (buccaneers especially) officers and captain sharing conditions would this result in more mixing?
it varied a lot from crew to crew depending on their origins, if the captain owned the ship he'd atleast afford his own cabin and a few private luxuries. Richard Taylor was also indicated by an eyewitness to eat his own separate food, as it was said by the witness that he occasionally went out of his cabin to eat with the men from the common pot. Other pirate companies shared conditions equally, including rations, quarters, etc
What I would've done to kill time? Id' get drunk as fuck and talk about my life with them pirates. Then I would do some physical labor with no stress in the world about taxes or social media or other things society would expect from me today.
Here's my pirate meme (only Benny Hill fans will understand it) : Anne Bonny's marriage with Calico Jack would be like : Anne Bonny : You've got the brains of an idiot!!!!!😡 Calico Jack : Do you want them back!!!???😡
If the alcohol was not rationed and freely available, then how did it last more than a day??😂 & how did they not all fight all the time over who drank it all or most of it or hogged it matey?
Dental maladies left untreated oft lead to abscesses that could cause great damage. Treatment was limited to pulling teeth with any convenient tools at hand. Personal hygiene was not existent other than soaking in salt water and imbibing rum.
wish I lived back in the 1700 hundreds, trust me, I would be one of the most powerful pirates ever, I would have people in Britain's naval navy and on warships feeding me information on what is the next move of the navy and I would adjust as such, also I would a ship just like the USS Pennsylvania of 1816, a crew of 2,000 strong men, my name would be Captain Edward "The leader" Edison
😢Love god and love all people. Trust, hope and do good in god. 😂Believe in the gospel Jesus Christ for Jesus Christ shed his blood and died for the sins of the world and he was buried and rose again from the dead three days later. For Jesus Christ God almighty and the flesh and if you believe in the gospel you are spiritually reborn into the family of God.
I swear I'm not trying to push any agenda. Well, with this in mind, I do have questions. Is there any documentation regarding homosexuality among pirates or sailors? Like, a thin veiled secret or something? Was it taboo as in the rest of the world in that time?
it was very taboo and there's no evidence of homosexuality being more or less prevalent than sailors or pirates. only incident we have of homosexuality being spoken of amongst pirates was when a pirate was confined by his associates on charges of homosexuality, meaning that a pirate could face penalties from his mates if he was one
