My eyes got real teary watching this. Knowing that how these animals were once so plentiful that the idea of them being wiped out is beyond comprehension; and now just seeing a FEW dead specimens of them on display in museums chokes me. Humans tend to be ignorant and take things for granted, and it is very often too late when we realized as they are gone.

Just imagine, many years from now (or maybe _not_ so many) people will look back at this time we live in and say, "back in 2015 there were still some elephants in the wild" or "there were still some rhinos roaming free." Because at some point there won't be. There will be specimens in captivity or they will simply not exist anymore...like in the movie *Bladerunner*

Actually it was after the black rhino was declared extinct that mass amounts of people and organizations started to help them,. And yes they are slowly increasing in numbers but not fast enough to be declared not endangered anytime soon.

I haven't heard this perspective on taxidermy, it's interesting and refreshing. I normally associate taxidermy with dusty museum decor and novelty roadkill squirrels.

It is sad to have these animals that are extinct to be extinct because of mankind. But, I just realized the benefit of taxidermy in preserving what these animals looked like while alive. So, taxidermy is like a lot of things in life--both negative and positive!

I got to see lonesome George while he was alive in the Galapagos. I also live in NY so when the exhibit opened i went to see him again and it felt like a funeral. So sad but they did a very nice job preserving him.

Every animal has rights too, just because they can't communicate, doesn't mean they are brainless animals that don't care if they die, us humans are basicly a pest on earth, we even slowly kill our only home in the universe. We even don't learn from our mistakes from history...think of it like this...right now people think wolves as a pest and needs to be gone, In the future, when the wolves are gone, people a will think of them as an animal that once was here and now is gone and we will feel sorry for it. Recently the black rino as been confirmed extinct cause there only one left, people don't realize about things until they are fully gone. We may be the most smart being on earth, but we act like children without proper parenting, it feels we are not even going forward, we keep on living the past...technology advances but people stay the same...

Vincent Zepczyk Animals are no different than trees and plants. You don't complain about the millions of trees "killed" to make toilet paper, wood, medicine, rubber etc. So don't complain when humans use animals for their own purposes. Like plants, animals should be of benefit to humans, otherwise we're wasting their potential usefullness.

Vincent Zepczyk No, I believe he is saying that we should use animals as a resource, much like trees, because everything on this earth is ours to utilize. What I believe is key, however, is the proper management of said resources, otherwise we end up putting species into extinction and causing much more destruction than what is necessary.

+Vincent Zepczyk omg i totally understand, wolves were gone in yellow stone national park and the herd animals took over and the foxes grew in numbers, they introduced them back and all the sick and injured herd animals were eaten by the wolves and the forest was getting back to the way it was, the hills and grass actaully grew again making meadows instead of the herd animals just eating all of it and trampling on it, the animals became healthier as well with the sick animals being eaten so only the strong and fit and healthy mated once again, everything was back in order.. but not everyone is happy with this, people want to hunt them again and get rid of them because they think of them as pests when the herd animals ate basically everything on their lands, people are the real pests and the real danger... animals wouldnt attack us unless provoked, harmed, scared or have young around, we do it for fun

There is an unfortunate bit of misleading in this informative clip. No, the people who created the original AMNH dioramas did not just think “Oooh, the bounty of Africa, let’s plunder it.” No. It was far more complex than that, and it’s a disservice to our naturalist ancestors to think of them in such a base way. Carl Akeley (for whom the African Hall is named) knew that the wildlife and wildscapes that he saw in Africa were under grave threat of being wiped out, and worked to carefully preserve these naturescapes of the past to educate and inspire the public. Frank Chapman used his bird habitat dioramas to help educate the feathered-hat-loving public to stop plundering away these magnificent birds. It’s easy to look at history and villainize it - DO NOT mislead the public about these beautiful works of art. If you wish to inform yourself further, please seek out the books "Windows on Nature" and "Kingdom Under Glass" for a start.

For all the sad people who are saying that humans must go extent, I tell them this. I assume that you now know the impact of our harmful actions on our planet. Why don't you use your energy to counter those harmful actions, instead of writing meaningless and useless comments. There are a lot of opportunities one can do to improve and protect the lives on this planet. There are a lot of volunteering opportunities out there, and there are a lot of actions one can do in his home that could help even a little, like recycling and many others. Spend your time and energy wisely in doing something which will have a positive effect on the future of our lives, and I wish you all the best.

This makes me so sad. It reminds me of all the beautiful creatures I used to watch during animal planet or nat geo specials. Now they've gone extinct, and no more specials are aired about them..It's also sad to know that my kids may never know/see the animals I've grown up loving.

I truly enjoyed this video in a way that I haven't thought of taxidermy before. It is so terrible the way that these species go extinct with hunting being the primary cause. The Lonesome George story had made my eyes water a bit and I hope that this video opens up the eyes of many and that a majority of the human race can take action in saving and preserving animals left on earth. I also hope that we can learn to appreciate these creatures :)
