Life After Fentanyl 

I take care of my brother who was 16 in a accident and basically was told to take him off life support and let him die and my Mother refused to do that so he was let go from rehab and my Mother since then has been his caregiver, mother and nurse. He is walking, talking and trying to do what he can by his self and then we lost my Mom in 2019 and my brother was then given to me to take care of, and a promise to my Mom that I would take care of him. I quit my job and moved into his home where my mom and brother lived and have spent the last 4 years including through Covid taking care of him. I think if they would allow him to get more Rehab and Physical Therapy he would be farther along. He lost 74% of his brain and was thought to be Brain Dead. We do lots of stuff and I teach him New words. My prayers for you and Jefferey. We live literally with the Court deciding what we can do and live poor. I’m alone and it’s hard sometimes and also rewarding. Thank you for sharing your story! 🥰

The hospital said the same thing to my daughter at 36 years old. She had peritonitis liver failure and had been into baited. She was sitting on the side of the bed because they said there was nothing more. The hospital could do for her and just she had everything packed up to go ready to go leave the hospital she had a heart attack because they gave her Two incompatible medication‘s. The nurse was right there and started treatment CPR so fortunately she didn’t have any brain damage. It took them 15 minutes to bring her back. By the time she had been in the hospital a couple of weeks they did it again. Wanted to release her to her apartment who at the time there was no electricity and no water. No one there to take care of her and give her medication. We had to fight just to get her to stay in the hospital another day or so and I’ve stayed with her three or four days trying to stay on top of the medication schedule making sure she didn’t have any more episodes making sure she had water, etc. very disturbing the fact that everybody’s stressed out and concerned for their loved one who’s having a life-threatening illness is further traumatized by the medical facilities and the insurance companies.

What an amazing human this mother is! She is SPOT ON about BCBS and every other insurance company. I needed life-saving meds in 2020 after 2 collapsed lungs and the continued to deny it for months. I see that Jeffrey crossed over to heaven on 3/6/24. God bless this family and comfort them during this unfathomable time.

this mom loves her son. I was thinking if Jeffrey is happy to be here. Sometimes (not saying this is the case here) family members will do anything to keep a loved one alive regardless. If Jeffrey is happy than I'm happy for him. But to me that's all it comes down to: we need to think about quality of life and sometimes letting someone go can be the ultimate act of love.

Heartbreaking. You’re an amazing, awesome, intelligent person fighting a huge corporation that lets down so many people. I’ve seen insurance companies deny lifesaving medications to people. A dad crying because his daughter couldn’t get chemo. Elderly people priced out their meds because their deductibles were so high. I quit being a pharmacist. I don’t know how someone can have no heart, make these decisions, tell people what’s happening (more specifically not) and then be able to sleep at night. Something has to change. BCBS is the absolute worst insurance. Everyone thinks they're great and they absolutely are NOT! These insurance companies are completely crooked corporations! I work in the medical field and see how evil these insurance corporations treat patients. This woman is a real definition for a true loyal Mother. May God keep her family strong to continue to fight for their son's well being and human rights! God bless them all! ❤🙌🏼

Unpopular opinion, but this poor man should have been allowed to pass when it was determined he had severe brain damage and multiple organ failure. He had no quality of life and no ability to choose whether to live his last few years in social isolation and constant therapy. The extreme life saving measures are extremely hard on a person. Being on a feeding tube is miserable. Being unable to let go harmed this whole family. Jeffery has now passed away and I’m thankful he is finally in peace. RIP, and to the family: I am very sorry for your loss. It is beyond clear that you loved Jeffery dearly. Not everyone gets to have that kind of love in their lives and I’m sure he was cared for and appreciated in life.

In my field i see patients with severe brian injuries often and the insurance companies tend to be very difficult when it comes to what the patient is recommended vs what they want to pay for

As a mother and a nurse who has 15 years experience working with patients like Jeffrey, I feel sorry that this mom doesn't understand both sides of this story. I understand how she feels, I'd want nothing but the best for my child. That being said, I'm not sure see sees the end game of her son's condition. He might be every bit of the miracle she believes him to be, but even if he had all of that therapy, etc he won't be independent. He will need extensive care for the rest of his life. Realistically, as soon as something happens to his mom, he'd be in that nursing home because who else cares for adults with that level of need? I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong, it's just frustrating to see her so heartbroken with a genuine lack of understanding.

I used to be a stubborn man, drunk driving was "normal" to me. After I became a father, I understood if something happened to me, it would happen to all my family as the only provider. I keep my self out of trouble for that reason, kids need us until they grow up.

So sorry for this lady losing her other son Jorge to drugs/ suicide and now fighting for Jeffrey .

May GOD BLESS this woman and her son Jeffrey. I watched my best friend get disconnected and die last year. The hospital kept him only for 10 days, me not being family and him not having anyone to advocate for him they were pushing to disconnect him from the 5th day. Even though he was fully awake and making movements. They had a tube down his throat not allowing him to communicate and i watched him take his last breathe. I feel for this Mother and family, i left the hospital feeling they killed my friend. Money over lives is disgusting.

As a RN, I have been on ethics committees in Texas, and why this is recommended is because of cost, yes, however it comes down to what quality of life does he have now? If you listen to her, he has no quality of life. He can’t eat, he has to be fed through a tube in his stomach that keeps getting infected. Unfortunately this is a viscous cycle that will keep happening, and infections will creep up everywhere no matter how careful you are. It sounds heartless but we do have the patients best interests at heart. God bless him and his family.
