Damn you were 28 years too late. This job is not satisfying at all. I got out of patrol after 5 years...left to go to the Feds! Way better quality of life
I left after 13 years and never looked back. I have cool stories to tell my current co-workers, and many I'd never tell my wife. The private sector is much more appealing than law enforcement these days. The sad thing is that most cops won't leave because of "the retirement" which isn't all that great. Too many cops die a few years after retiring, so what's the point of having a "good" retirement if you can't enjoy it. I will say, I'm 3 years gone and I'm easily making double the money (total compensation) now than I would have been 3 years later if I stayed.
Richard Brodowski we couldn’t agree more. Being a cop these days is totally different. Thank you for your comment, your work as an officer and offering some insight into your experience! It is appreciated.
May I ask what you are doing in the private sector? I have 13 years on with the intention of doing 30 but this day and age, not sure I will even make 20. I just feel stuck, everything pre law enforcement was to get here. Military and college all geared toward law enforcement.
@@travisaudit1308 well missed the original comment 2 years ago lol....I went to work at a tech company. I started in technical support for our main product (paid much more than LE), then I've worked my way up and I now manage one of the teams.
@@andrewpbjur sorry for missing this 2 years ago, but I started working at a tech company for their customer support (paid more than LE too). I've worked my way up and I now manage one of the teams.
Awesome vid! I got out of law enforcement 7 years ago, it's a long story. I spent the last two years trying to get my license renewed. Now I'm trying to get back in it now. I'm also two classes away from finishing up my real estate classes.
Im a retired Cop from a city in Northern NJ. Thank God i made it. Few speed bumps in road but i made through it with a pension Thank God. Thanks for the video.
The good news is that it is COMPLETELY possible. Reinvent yourself and keep all the great thing and experiences you’ve had. Good luck brother. You’ll find your way.
Im facing the possibility of a disability retirement after almost 30 years as an LEO. To say that I am hesitant about my social life would be an understatement. Im already in a major depression about my future and I haven’t even filed the paperwork yet. If you could do so more videos like this or if you have any suggestions, that would be extremely helpful. Thanks brother. God Bless.
Fireside Coffee thank you sir! Please remember that there IS life after LE. Me and all my guys are proof. We tend to start to think we are cops and not human, but you were someone before LE and you’ll be someone AFTER LE. Take the opportunity to reinvent yourself. Think about who you want to be now and be that person. Trust me, it looks scary from that side, but from this side now, it wasn’t too bad at all. Be blessed brother!
I retired in ‘97 w/30 yrs service. Along the way I completed both my bachelor’s & master’s degrees, going part time, so I had the credentials to get into Federal gov’t service at a senior level. A second retirement has us set for life, so my advise is plan on leaving the job so you’re ready when the time comes.
I want to quit but I've gotten comfortable with the high pay, low labourous work. My heart just isn't in it anymore. Way too much bs that's affecting me mentally and psychologically. And it's not the bs of the streets, it's the bs and politics. Cops know what I mean by this. I literally want to leave like yesterday. Personally, I wouldn't recommend to anyone whose thinking of being a cop to become a cop especially if you're married or in a serious relationship. The job will destroy your relationship and you will become cynical at some point and it will carry over into your private life.
Last July, I medically retired after years in federal law enforcement. I agree with everything you said in your video. Having difficulty adjusting in my new job with the younger managers who exhibit absolutely no skills in negotiation or de-escalation. You're right, I don't put on a uniform anymore, but I am still a cop on the inside.
Today was my last day just short of 11 years. I’m starting catastrophic insurance adjusting. Still answer calls for service and help people but… no d*** head admin or baby sitting adults. I know I will miss it but it’s time to go.
This video has truly been helpful. Thank you for all the great advise. I definitely agree that it is so important to have a plan before the end. Thank you!
My friend is a retired Police Officer from Suffolk County Police Department, he was a cop for 17 and a half years, he collects a very great pension, he also did 20 years as a reserved in the Air force, he doesn't know what to do with himself, I want to convince him to work a high paying security job .
