I feel your pain with funding, I got accepted to do my PhD but also didn't get funding. It's so sad that Arts and Humanities aren't funded as well as sciences. I really admire your determination to still do it, even though you're juggling so much. Good luck with the rest of your studies!

You've really helped me find my passion and feel okay for following it! I was going into my fourth year of a Biology degree, liking it but I much preferred my Spanish linguistics and literature classes I was taking for my minor. I'm finishing my biology BS, but now, I am also double majoring in Spanish! I really hope to go onto a graduate program for Spanish and eventually become a scholar. Your love and passion for literature and academia are inspiring. Thank you!

I always love your videos on academia. Thanks so much for this one again! It makes me both anxious and excited about possibly doing a PhD in the future. I recently volunteered at/attended my first multiple-day conference and it was SUCH an amazing experience. I'd been to symposiums and separate panels before but this was my first time being there for the whole thing and although I was volunteering I was also able to attend the panels and to chat with the speakers. It was super inspiring and I can't wait to be able to participate (as a speaker, not just a volunteer) in things like that myself someday!

+DomReads thanks but I always feel as though I should clarify that it's far from perfect. I don't talk about my personal life on here but as much as I love my PhD this balancing act is difficult and I wouldn't chose if if there was another way. I've struggle mentally a lot this past year and a half but knowing I've made a choice and am pursuing my dream gets me through. I just don't want anyone to make the mistake of idealising a life that is far from perfect because I don't want to share as much of my life as some youtubers are comfortable with. But really thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and anything that inspires and reaffirms people's interest in academia is wonderful for me ^_^

I'm an undergrad in Classics right now and it is super interesting to hear about your PhD! Thanks for making this video, I'm sooooo confused about what I'm going to do after undergrad with Classics. I love it a lot and I love the community at my university (McGill in Canada) and I'm also looking to do a year abroad in the UK (perhaps Edinburgh) soon! But thanks for sort of giving some insight into what the process is like in the PhD it's just really interesting to hear about all the different things you have to balance. I would be curious to know more about your experiences at the conferences you've mentioned, what your takeaways and sort of approach to those events are... I'm still new to that sort of conference world so I'd love to hear your take on it! Thanks again!!

This is an incredibly helpful video. I'm starting my master's this fall and I feel a bit nervous about how it will all work out with me doing the minimum full time course load while also working basically full time. I know a master's is not as intense as a PhD, but the nerves are still ever present. I plan to pursue a PhD, and I'm already thinking ahead to what I would focus on, and hearing that when you applied your focus was a little broad is soothing. Overall, this video is really useful and inspiring. I'm wishing you good luck on being able to present your paper!

I'm starting my PhD in October this year and I have been really worried about it (although also completely overwhelmed with excitement, too). This is really interesting to hear about! I only have an AA degree (not sure if there's an equivalent in the UK - it's a 2-year degree from a junior/community college). Part of me has always wished I'd gone on to get a 4-year degree and maybe a Master's, but...it wasn't in the cards back then, and wouldn't be feasible now. But I really like hearing about people's experiences in higher ed and especially specific areas of focus like this.

Like how do you plan out your studies when it's a more researched based program vs. classwork? I've gotten my Masters and am debating a PhD but looking into what that means exactly. I know each program is different but without structured classwork, just wondering how you manage to stay on task!

Almost finishing my dissertation for my honours degree in chemistry with the OU. (predicted 3rd class- not worked for me) This is the second thesis on malaria. In September I start an MSc at Robert Gordons, part time. (IWhere I did my ordinary degree in chemistry). I am caring for my grandad, and being on campus is better for me, trying to do work at home I'm always interrupted, I usually have to invade the medical library in aberdeen to get work done. Plus mendeley has been silly beggars, using Zotero at the mo, RGU uses Refworks, best reference management tool ever!My Dissertation is, "A Review of Novel 4 - aminoquinoline Hybrids used as Antimalarial Drug Treatments."

This was very interesting to hear how different PhDs can be from one another. And dont worry, everybody's first year is to find their focus. I am in my last 9 months of my PhD, and I can say it is a trip, emotionally and mentally. It is also sad to hear that you have to pay fees for eat and it is so hard to get funding. Here in the Netherlands, we are treated as employees of the university, since we produce research for them and help with the classes. It is not an amazing pay, but definitely something you can comfortably live on...

Just read your article on the Myth of Procne and Philomena. A very interesting read. I was impressed on the contrast of myth and realities of life for the Athenian women. I was glad to see that you did mention 'ligitimate citizens'' as opposed to slaves. I am sure that many people reading these wonderful mythological stories think that the women were known as second class citizens no matter their status. I am unfamiliar with Demosthenes work especially in light of the funeral speech honoring those who died at the Battle of Chaeronea. I guess I will have to look this up. Thank you for sucha titilating article. Good work, good read. Thank you.

+Stephanie Steoberl Demosthenes is my jam. He was an Athenian orator who mainly wrote court speeches. The public funeral speech was a product of the Athenian democracy and we have 5/6 that survive from different authors. Yes I think the complexity of status is incredibly important. Although I'd say women were always second class to their male counterparts I.e. They had far less rights than legitimate male citizens, that does not mean they did not have rights that were expected to be respected by all. I hope you enjoy Demosthenes if you get to read him. It's a fascinating insight into Athenian legal procedure.

Thank you! Audiobooks, commuting and the pure joy of reading aha. I'd say I read less than a lot of booktubers but I love reading, it relaxes me which is incredibly important so I always find time for it. I listen to audiobooks when I walk, work out (which hasn't been much lately aha) and clean. I also always try to read for at least 30 minutes before I go to sleep.

I enjoyed hearing about part-time experiences too as I feel like I don't hear them as often, which was difficult when I was committing to part-time at the beginning. But with the lack of funding for the arts and humanities it's the only way for lots of people.

It seems the programs are structured a little differently here in the states. We all taught undergrad classes while taking our seminars. (I did mine in English.) At the end of the first year, we had oral exams, essentially to make sure we weren't complete wash-outs. Then after we finish our course-work (2 or 3 years), we have comprehensive exams. At my university we received lists of readings each of our examiners expected us to be responsible for...total of about 300 titles. So we then had 9-12 months to read and prepare for the exams. The pass rate on the comprehensives can be pretty daunting, unfortunately. And then we do a dissertation and defend it before our committee. We also publish papers/give conference papers where possible. I was one chapter from finishing my dissertation when I dropped out. (I know...) But in the 90s, there weren't any jobs anyway and I left the program to write my commercial books instead. I regret not finishing because I was so close to the end, but I don't regret leaving for the reason I did.

Jean Bookishthoughts I'm still very impressed, I'm in the final stages of my PhD (post-viva) and couldn't imagine having a job along side it. But my PhD was very different to yours and experiment based so all my writing was left till the end. Remember to take some time out now and then 😉

I was definitely lonely when I was still in Edinburgh but I've met other PhD students at the university since moving to London so it's nice to chat to other people in your situation. Also between working in an office and just having more friends in London, all of my Edinburgh friends had left essentially, I don't really get lonely anymore :). The actual study process is still quite a solitary one. I quite like that though.

When your completely finished, how many years will you have been in university for? And what would you want to do after? I feel like taking a vacation to Greece would be cool for you to do.

I'd done 5 full-time years pre-PhD and it really depends on how long I take but it'll probably be 5 years so 10 in total. I have had the chance to visit Greece a couple of times when I was in my undergraduate degree - Crete and Athens.They were great experiences. Will have to wait until I have more time and money for my next visit aha.

I'm planning on doing a Phd, i love academia and love studying my current degree. My only issue is a fear of public talking.. can you answer these two questions for me? 1) Do you have to do public talking? 2) what kind of work can you do apart from lecturing?

Did you go on to study a PhD? If you're afraid of public speaking look up a public speaking group around you. They're everywhere and some are quite cheap.

I mean my job had nothing to do with my PhD application aha - I'm assuming similarly to you I worked in retail throughout university to pay rent (I started when I was 16 in school just a few hours a week). I think in terms of humanities PhDs (unless perhaps its something practical like archaeology) there isn't an expectation you will have worked in your field before. I got my PhD on the basis of academic merit, my undergrad and postgrad degree and having a good proposal/a research idea that the university thought was worth facilitating. I do however plan on doing a video on how to apply for a PhD in the humanities in the next couple of month so that will have lots more detail and will hopefully be useful :D.

Ancient Greek but other than that I've never read a book in another language, I have high school french which occasionally comes in handy and started doing some academic german during my masters, which unfortunately I haven't had the time to work on this past year. :)

I haven't had much time to commit to it - what time I do have I've prioritised Ancient Greek for the time being but a lot of classics academia is written in German so I will need to improve mine.

I've never heard of a part-time PhD program; was this an exception the program made or something common? Doing a graduate degree without funding is terrifyingly hard, you must really value your studies to be that motivated! AFAIK the average time to completion for PhDs in the arts and sciences in the US is like 7.5 years, so if you were doing that all part-time that would be like 15 years. How long do you think it will take you?

In the UK a humanities Phd full-time is roughly 3-4 years. Part time it is around 5-6 years as it isn't exactly double but everyone is different, you can finish early or require extra time. I don't know what it's like in the US but I've already done 5 years of undergraduate and postgraduate studies before starting my PhD. There is no strict program when it comes to humanities doctoral studies in the UK. It was simply a matter of having a good original proposal and demonstrating that I was the candidate to undertake my research after finding supervisors with the right experience and interests who wanted to and could support me. So I'm not sure there is a norm to make exceptions from :D. Gosh it's all so different in each country I hope I'm making sense. Part-time is reasonably common in the UK, I don't know what the figures are but I know quite a few others - there is so little funding in areas like the arts and humanities in the UK I was lucky to get partial funding. I know part-time PhD students who are also paying their fees unfortunately :(. I do thanks. I love them and I want to pursue some sort of academic career so that I can keep doing research/promote the classics forever aha. Plus I think my research is important as does my university thankfully.

Thanks for the reply, that's very interesting! In the US in humanities in most cases the PhD comes with 3 years of full-time classes/seminars even if you have a masters already, so you don't begin full-time dissertation work until like year 4 (or year 5-6 if you already have a masters!). Your research does sound interesting and more widely important so I hope you will post more videos about academic life and studies--there are not many booktubers who post about the newest literature then one video later about esoteric publications in classics :D Keep it up ;)

+sven viko ah I see that makes sense, yeah here you dive straight into the research. Perhaps that's because you begin university studying a much more specific subject from year one in the U.K. And thanks a lot! Glad you enjoy the videos ^_^

In some respect but I'm open to seeing where my life takes me :). I definitely want to keep researching/writing and perhaps teaching if possible. Full time lecturing positions at university are few and far between though unfortunately and academia is becoming a harder job to get into/find a stable income from. Lots of lecturers are being paid by the hour and earning very little on small contracts so have to subsidise it with something else. It still seems so far away for me.

+Inessa Maria full-time is roughly 3-4 years and part-time 5-6 although it various according to the individual's pace at conducting their research :)

Engineering/Sciences it's 3 years FT, 4 if you go to a doctoral training centre and get an MRes in year 1. This is assuming you already have a masters in Sci/Eng.

Dont you get paid in the UK for doing a PhD? In the Netherlands you get employed by the University and receive a salary between €2200 and €2800

Depends on what you are studying but it's not guaranteed (well obviously if it was I'd be sorted aha). Some grants come with the condition of teaching but you still have to win them - I have only been eligible for one grant which I was shortlisted for but the competition was high so because it was for all humanities in London universities and many of the applicants like me won't have been eligible for anything else as there is so little humanities funding, but I didn't make it. If I teach a course at some point I will get paid but one course isn't a full-time job. More and more in the UK at least there are less and less full time teaching positions.

Jean Bookishthoughts Thanks for yout reply. That seems quite difficult and can put off many potential bright students from persuing a PhD. In The Netherlands they encourage you to do a PhD. I was thinking of doing one in The UK, but funding is a major issue. Getting employed by the University simply for doing your PhD there is a much more viable option for many poor students. It is really unfortunate and frustrating and I have lots of opinions on the cost and accessibility of higher education and academia in the UK :(. You may have access to more funding than I do as a non-UK student studying in the UK though, I have definitely seen more grants of that type, or from people's home country to study abroad. I would look into it before ruling out coming over. Again it also depends on what you're studying. Thanks so much! That means a lot :).
