Hi everyone! It has been a minute since I've filmed school related ~things~ but I am really looking forward to preparing this summer + sharing that journey with you. In this video I talk to you about my back to school slide show that I do, show you some books I am reading to prepare for my grade level assignment, and make one of my favorite salads with you! Our grade 8s always did a greasers/socs dress up day... I taught 9th grade but it was always fun to see how excited they were about it! Also- the most epic thing at my school was the lip sync competition for the 6-8s, but the whole school (kindergarten and up) would watch! There were auditions, and only 10 performances picked to perform... over 20 years ago and we still talk about it!

Yes! I agree. I read it in 7th grade that and The Giver and both of those books started my love of reading and are my some of my favorite books! I still have my 7th grade editions. I never want to get rid of them. I am 30 years old now lol. Sodapop and Jonny cake were my crushes.

I’m 26 and The Giver and The Outsiders are still two of my favorite books I’ve ever read! Being Jewish, the Diary of Anne Frank was something I grew up reading at a young age. My family hid and fled Europe during the same time as Anne Frank. Good luck on your newest adventure ☺️

Shocked you didn’t know The Outsiders was a movie/ never read it. Fun fact: The Outsiders was the first YA novel! Hinton wanted to write about her experiences as a teen and didn’t see that in any of the books. So she’s like the starter of YA!

"Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." is a lyric that relates to you because you have introduced both the bitter and the sweet emotions with such grace. I'm going to be a first year teacher this year and I did get hired at an amazing school for my dream position (kindergarten) however I have been feeling SO much anxiety about the school year and I find myself not wanting to think about school or begin preparing because I get so stressed out thinking about it. I'm trying to find inspiration to start getting some school stuff ready and this video definitely helped! I still feel overwhelmingly anxious about it but your videos make me feel calm! First of all, congrats! That is so exciting! What you are feeling is SO normal. Take it day by day. You do not have to have it all figured out at once. I would try reaching out to your department head and connecting with some teachers, it would make you feel so much better!

I hope to teach kindergarten once I graduate & get my bachelor's degree. I'm going on my sophomore year of college now. I want to gain experience, & then go back for my master's degree. I'd like to focus my Masters program on ESL so I can teach it in the high school level.

I'm 26, graduated from law school last May, and through a LOT of soul-searching have decided to become a teacher in Plano, Texas through the alternative certification route. I truly feel it is my calling. My favorite teachers were my English teachers; they left an indescribable impact on my life, so I plan to get certified in Language Arts 7-12. I am nervous to start down this new path, especially being such a fish out of water and during these unprecedented times (nervous about getting a job), but your videos are making my heart sing and giving me the courage to follow my passion. Some advice: find another career. Right now during this pandemic we are being asked to return to school and risk our lives and those of our family's without any guarantees that we will be safe. We are underpaid, underappreciated, and overworked because of the false belief that teaching is an altruistic job and not a career worthy of a living salary. If you want daily stress, schoolwork at home, and be berated by middle schoolers, parents, and admin on a weekly basis while putting in 12+ hrs a day, have at it! Otherwise, I suggest you stick to the law field and become a law librarian, paralegal, or othe career because it'll do you in. I only have 10 more years to retire at 25 yrs. then I'm out.

i’m going into the eighth grade this coming school year and soooo wish that you could be one of my teachers! i love your message and i feel like you and your classroom would just provide such a welcoming and loving environment. i read the diary of anne frank in class last year and read the outsiders for summer reading last summer and really enjoyed both of them (i’m a reader too lol) you are such an inspiration to me and i love you!! 💕

I taught “Out of the Dust” during my student teaching experience this past spring and WOW, it was powerful. The language is beautiful and relatable to 7th graders on many levels. We paired the poetry in the book with our students own poetry writing. It was so powerful to read the book alongside with writing our own poetry and being vulnerable in the classroom. Absolute favorite unit I have taught so far.

There are no teaching jobs where I'm at. Even though I'm not in a high paying teaching position, I am so thankful that I have a job for sure next year. You should read "Wonder," "Number the Stars," and "A Wrinkle in Time." I teach middle school and my students love them. :)

It's been my dream to become a teacher since I was in high school and I can't believe after years of hard work getting my degree in biology and my masters in teaching that I am finally starting. I read The Outsiders and watched the movie in my 6th grade language arts class and still look back at that time with such good memories. It’s by far one of my favorite books I read in my whole middle/high school experience. I’m 23 and a teacher now too, and it’s just crazy how much literature can impact children! “Wonder” was a book that came out right when I was in 8th grade my ELA teacher read it with 5th and 6th and it has such a good message that doesn’t just apply to starting middle school and acceptance so she decided to read it with 7th and 8th but can also be extremely impactful with slightly older kids going into high school I really enjoyed it!!! (I went to a really small middle school that’s why classes were combined)

I absolutely love The Outsiders! I typically teach it in Year 10 (10th Grade) but it depends on your cohort. I think it's one of those narratives (both the book and the film) that is meaningful to many age groups. 🌸

I read the outsiders when I was in high school. I loved it! After we read the book, we watched the movie. It was awesome! We also read the diary of Anne Frank in high school. I believe you and your kids will love both books and movies if they have it available.

I am so excited to see what your new room will look like, but yeah, it’s not going to be quite what we would all normally want for next year, but I think you would enjoy working with 6th graders, I think that’s the grade I would want to do if I move up to middle school throughout my teaching career! I read the giver in elementary and since then as a young and adult and once as an adult- I’ve reread the book 5 times. And I’ve only reread very few books in my life- it taught me something new every time I read it. It’s an incredible story. I read other works by the author too. (Distopian novels!)- ALSO, MIDDLE SCHOOL:) I teach at my old middle school currently, and it was my first year (of course sadly cut short). Middle school can be tough at times, but find community in teachers that will be open to you and you’ll be okay. I miss my Broncos💛💙

I teach 6-8th grade SpEd and I co-teach a bunch of ELA classes! Our 6th graders absolutely love Among the Hidden, 7th grade loves Outsiders and The Giver. In 8th grade the first book they read is I Am Malala, which is definitely a challenge but it's an amazing story that really expands kids' worldview. I also taught Hatchet to my 6-8th resource class and they loved it!!

Outsiders is a play too. I produced it as a 9-10 fall play many years ago. 😁 Sooo many amazing books for middle school. You are going to have so much fun. Our district still teaches The Outsiders and The Giver in 7th grade, and they are two of my all-time favorite books! I also do a similar welcome slide show where the kids are forced to see pictures of my cat and me at Saints games, but it helps them understand my crazy. LOL. I’m going into year 23, and most of my career has been in middle school. I love my middles dearly! Your kids will absolutely love you!

This is SO EXCITING! The slideshow looks great! I love making a slideshow for my new students for the first day every school year. I also love playing 2 truths and 1 lie with my new students on the first day. ❤️❤️❤️ Your middle schoolers are going to love you and cherish you! Also: so many great books! I love teaching The Outsiders, especially since I read it when I was in middle school! I taught Inside Out and Back Again as well as The Diary of Anne Frank my first year and it was wonderful!

Inside Out and Back Again is amazing! This book reminded me of why I am studying to become an English teacher. I can not wait to bring that book into a text set and lesson plan one day. It is an incredible YA novel.

I teach 7th grade and I’m so happy that you are teaching middle school! They are amazing!! My favorite book that I read with mine last year was Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. It was the first thing we read. We do book clubs and independent reading with reading conferences for the most part, but I also love reading with them.

If you end up teaching The Outsiders; you HAVE to show your students the movie. Teaching this book is such an experience. Love combining this book with Robert Frost study, doing a Graffiti wall of 50s slang, and doing end of the unit projects! So much fun!

WOWZA!! you are such a stellar human!! im gonna be a sophomore in high school and my dream is to be a teacher, and it has been since elementary school. i love watching these videos and pinning all the things on pinterest for my future classroom. it’s like you said im just so so excited to meet my future students one day. i pray over them all the time. you inspire me brit! you make me so excited and overjoyed and confident to follow my dreams, especially when a lot of people like to tell me otherwise and say i shouldn’t teach because of long hours and little pay. but i KNOW i am unbreakable and i can do this! thank you for being your rockin self :)))

I loved The Outsiders, The Giver, and the Diary of Anne Frank! Also, I highly recommend reading and sharing The Book Thief with your future students. It has also been made into a movie if you wanted to have them watch it😊

I remeber reading those books! Specifically the Diary of Anne Frank (the play version) was so special. I loved the way it told a story, plus I got to play Margot, so that made it more interesting/immersive.

We read the outsiders in 6th grade and I had a phone case for it until sophomore year of high school 🤦🏻‍♀️ the obsession is real! 😂🥴💕 So excited for y’all! And excited for the one in each of your classes that will get obsessed like I did and sink into a fandom she’ll look back on in college and go “oh..oh no.... welp no regrets!” 😂
