I always wanted to be a pilot as a kid but was told no way with glasses, military no way. I went about my 20s and most of my 30s without even batting an eye. Then I was on vacation and saw a young man on a regional airline wearing glasses, I asked him was that ok and he said yup! The very next spring I began being glued to all of the youtube pilots and went down to Warbird Aventures in Kissimmee and got my private license! I then did my IFR and went off for my commercial. I may be 20 years behind the curve but I hope to retire from my current job and fly for an airline for a second career. It was easily the best decision I have made in my life!!! I even sold my nissan GTR to buy my own plane because I was sick of renting the school's planes when I just wanted to joy ride around town! I think RU-vidrs really help open people's eyes to the fact that Aviation is open to most people and it's worth every penny to follow those dreams!

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I wanted to become a pilot but I was led to believe that my glasses and my vision would prevent me from flying. I did not become a commercial pilot and went into IT instead. Then I went to a local flying club and got my PPL. I’m happy where I am now, it’s the best hobby in the world. Good luck to you with your career change

Was told you need an engineering degree because the recruiter wanted fighter pilots. Was shocked to learn later that history degrees got pilot wings.

Same story on the eyes. I became a dentist, and now in my seventieth hear I am taking flying lessons. I am finding it truly is difficult to teach an old dog a new trick but I am getting there.

Currently sitting at about 38 hours, and I’ll be 27 years old next week. I plan on going all the way to the airlines, but this is the type of flying that truly excites me. Just pure aviation fun and adventure that most people will never experience. I CANNOT WAIT until I finish all of my training and get my PPL. I love this channel

Matt, this was my favorite on all your vlogs. This vlog was very well composed and representative of our mutual love for aviation -- community, scenery and the exceptional thrill that comes from doing it yourself. I loved that you picked dusk for the river flight. The lighting made it much more dramatic
@tropicthndr
@tropicthndr 2 года назад
Yea, except a Bonanza’s are not the plane for skimming rivers when bird strikes are coming at you at a high rate of speed. Your just asking for a hit when your over a sanctuary doing low level coastal flying or stuff like this in a speed machine. Really bad idea, that’s what still acft are for.

I've always wanted to learn to fly...and I came close when I worked with an old retired United 747 pilot I worked with had offered to teach a handful of us coworkers. But....like life, it changed. The guy flaked out...I ended up with tools that just went to waste. It was crushing. I proposed to my 2nd wife in a rented plane. Paid for a pilot and an hour's worth of flight time, and the rest was history. Now I'm going to turn 50 in July, kids are grown, and my dreams of being able to fly for more than an hour in a small plane is quickly fading away. Just seems like it would be amazing to fly up to Montana (I live in Twin Falls, ID), and cruise back in an afternoon. But.....alas, some dreams just don't come true. And that's ok. :) Great videos, my friend. Enjoy!!

Motivating myself to finish. Due to money issues, I've had to stop several times. I've got all my training and I even went in for a check ride, but weather canceled those plans the day of. I need to retake the written exam, brush up on the maneuvers and reschedule it! It has been 180+ days since I last flew but I have hope of finishing soon.

Beautiful flying. Are you restricted as to how close to the ground you can fly? And if another plane came up that canyon, would you get any sort of warning from your instruments, or do you have to rely on visuals?
@mattym8
@mattym8 2 года назад
You have to fly 500’ from people and buildings. And you can’t fly dangerously. If another plane had an ADSB transponder he’d see them on his screen. If they don’t (and the don’t need to, but many do) he would have to use his eyes.

Since you've been living in Wyoming I've been wanting to pay a visit and interview you. I'm in Casper. Weather this winter has prevented me from making plans to fly out your way. In europe the CAA would rip your license to pieces if you flew this low. In all of europe we need VFR 500 ft of clearance to the terrain elevation, and are only allowed to go below when the intention is taking off or landing. What are the regulation in the U.S?
@mattguthmiller

@@mattguthmiller Matt, just don't let someone talk you into going lower than you are comfortable not having surveyed the area prior for wires/towers. This is from someone that flew Air Force recce Phantoms at 500' throughout Europe and the US years ago. I now fly an RV-8 and don't go below 1000' unless I know the area. Great vid.
