It’s not a flotation device. It’s made to add Buoyancy the bag so that your gear doesn’t wind up on the bottom of a river or lake.

As a physician I would recommend that at least 8 Imodium be added to a kit. 2 pills is only the first dose and thereafter 1 pill for each additional loose stool. (It never stops after the first dose). And it’s not uncommon for others to come down with diarrhea on the same trip as well. Love your post.
@ReneMedia
@ReneMedia 11 месяцев назад
Oh please, as a 'physician', in this scenario you would lack to get supplies after the 72 hours, and we all know what happens if you not consistently keep taking your medicine. You lose in both scenarios regardless without additional supplies, if not getting it in 48 unlikely to even get it in 120 hours. Doctors are always the same, same in warfare, they freeze while 'uneducated medics' do the job.

Good sleuthing about the purpose of the valve and grab handle. In the absence of any documentation confirming or contradicting your hypothesis, I think you've identified its best use, if not its intended use. Well done!

If you're using the purification tabs and the life straws, boiling water is unnecessary. Food prep is unnecessary as there's already emergency food cubes included. Further complicating the food situation is pointless. Remember this kit is for 72 hours absolute emergency use, not to set up home for many weeks.

That's called a "Boston Valve" used on inflatable rafts.
@truepatriot2404
@truepatriot2404 2 года назад
Unless you pack really heavy gear any roll top dry bag can be used for flotation. Either to support the gear or to hang on to for water crossing. Simply expand the bag as much as possible and roll the top without squeezing out excess air. They will support a surprising amount of weight. At a minimum it will float the bag and gear. I had mine get dumped out on several rafting trips, was able to recover the gear each time. With that said, I think the valve is gimmicky and adds a potential failure/leakage point to what otherwise appears to be a decent dry bag.
@NickFrom1228
@NickFrom1228 2 года назад
Same with water bottles. If you have means to get water and the water you have is not that crucial then you can drink/pour out your water and seal up your bottle. A 32 oz bottle will support a decent amount. You can pick up soda cans and cover the holes with duct tape, shove them in a bag and have short term floatation. You are only limited by your imagination.
@gar3th27
@gar3th27 2 года назад
The valve is a Boston valve. The same type used on inflatable kayaks. After a real world use of the emergency kit, you're probably likely to start with a fresh/brand new kit to replace it... Should you survive.

I normally use a 2 person 72hr kit for 1 person. Also, I would add a shamy towel to this as a way to dry ones self off if wet. This will help prevent hypothermia in colder conditions. I agree with adding the additional food pack to this kit. One Great thing about the dry bag is it can also be used as a pillow. But as I said I use this kind of kit as a 1 person kit. You should also add any medication that you take such as Blood pressure meds or diabetic meds . And remember that you have consumable items in this kit and if you end up using some of these items at any point. Make sure you restock the kit. I have seen people forget to do this. And you should also add a P51 can opener for that just in case.
@rickyhonerkamp2526
@rickyhonerkamp2526 2 года назад
Great review. I like the bag and you added some high value components for a 72 hour kit. I would also add one of the cheap $1 Walmart headlamps, good enough for short term use. I have found that the whistle combo is a good reliable piece of gear that is regularly slighted on many video reviews. It is a loud whistle, a reliable compass for a button type, provides adequate storage for some waterproof matches and striker, a couple of cotton balls, and a small ferro rod. I carry one in my vest pocket whenever I head into the woods. I think you should reevaluate your view on this tool. I always add a couple of individual eye drop tubes to my first aid supplies. You never know when you could get something in you eye or get an injury you need to irrigate, especially in the woods. Yours is one of my favorite channels, I think you do a great job. Keep up the good work.

Definitely nice kit . I do like what you add at the end. Now what I add to it if their was room is a Silky pocket saw and a victorinox or leatherman knife and headlamp small cooking pot like the Stanley's 24oz just have another way to get drinking water and some storm proof matches. One those Arcturus tarp. Maybe a small folding shovel. I myself like sometimes buying premade kits and see how I can Doctor them up as well.

IMO the bag is fine as is. I think it’s meant to be stored on a boat and deployed with a life raft or dingy if your boat sinks. Explains why no knife pointy things are included and the emphasis on signaling. Those glow sticks on a rope swung in a circle would be visible for miles at night. The tent for sun protection and space blankets for signal flags.Also almost everything is plastic which doesn’t corrode. The water is a little light but if rationed properly might last 3 days. The thinking being if you’re not found by then you’re probably done for.

It may sound dumb but I like to keep a small kite in my emergency survival kit. It's homemade from an old shiny silver mylar blanket with long bright orange and silver streamer tails to use as a signal instead of packing flare guns since I live and hike in high windy mountains. When the sun shines the kite glows and flashes brightly, hard to not see.

16:52 Easy to test. Fill the bag with weight equal to the contents. Inflate the bag. Hop in the pool. Will it still keep you afloat? I bet it would do a pretty decent job of it. At least it would provide an assist to someone in the water. That, coupled with other improvised flotation would probably do the trick. I learned that even blowing air into the neck hole of my t-shirt would Inflate it and keep me above water. Just keep the fabric wet and use your head as the 'cork' in the 'bottle'.

I just want to point out that many of the ziplock bags have vent holes; they are NOT waterproof, so do not depend on them to keep any contents dry. I would swap them all out for better baggies/pouches and carefully press out excess air before fully zipping them closed. I detest baggies with holes then them for this very reason. Good video, sir.

Agreed: if you were drowning, you'd probably have bigger things on your mind than dumping the contents of your survival bag and huffing-and-puffing on that valve for a few minutes to inflate it! If you inflate it with the contents inside before getting in your boat, it will inflate the bag to a larger volume that takes up more room, but would help save it should your boat overturn by letting it float, and it could similarly help to save the kit if you inflate it before crossing a stream.

If you can, stuff a clean pair of socks, pants and a shirt or hoodie in there. If you get soaked crossing water or from a sudden downpour flash flood etc... then you'll have all the stuff needed to set up camp while soaked and get a fire going, and have clean warm clothes to switch into while you dry your other set by the fire. Carry them in another bag tied to this bag if you have to. Whatever it takes.

~1:01:OK I give up. That tag/content list is printed on what looks like a glossy card stock, making reading it a practical impossibility. The way it is lit makes it even more difficult. You could start a non-survival drinking game here. Every time the word "Emergency" is seen or used on the packaging, take a shot. By the time you get most of this over-priced junk unpacked, you won't care quite so much about being in a risky situation! Lifestraw is better than most of its cheap imitations. The wire saw (a good one) is the best addition you made. Toss a good quality multi tool in just for laughs and you can take out some of the other stuff and start saving weight. The Shelter side of this kit is good only for a laugh or two. Ground cover and a good large tarp with heavy grommets and more paracord will get you a lot farther. Take this kit out somewhere and lets see if you can live on it for 3 days. The most common mistake people make in a survival situation is never having used all these nifty toys. Yes. I'm talking about the two things you can't get into that inflatable toy. Experience and training.

I turn that two person three day kit into a two-person week-long kit.. and everything that came with it originally
