Sustainable forest management is one of the practices used in maintaining Satoyama landscapes. This video introduces two entrepreneurs who employ both traditional knowledge and scientific advancement to support the biological diversity of their forests and mountains. Chouichiro Oono keeps his fathers charcoal factory alive by managing a grove of Kunugi trees that are needed to produce traditional sumi charcoal for Japanese tea ceremonies. Toru Hayami, owner of the Hayami Forests, plants several species of trees to grow side-by-side, helping to sustain the overall health of his forest. Their lives and businesses demonstrate that the practices of Satoyama are financially viable.

Very interesting, I'm wondering if biochar production would be a profitable option it could be used for organic farming purposes.

I know it's been a year since this comment, but this place is in Owase, Mie prefecture. But the forest showed in the video might be in Kihoku, just above Owase.

"So charcoal producers are searching for new markets that are more appropriate in modern times" I wish the U.S. could take a page out of their book... We need to be finding other ways for these coal producers to make a living, rather than promising we will bring back an obsolete industry.

What about that nuclear reactor that’s poisoning the sea and ocean?
@rawhiphopsoulv3868

They do all this and trim the trees in a forest and then dump tons of nuclear radiation in the ocean from the fukashima mess up. does anyone else think that is insane...

R J I Like to keep an open mind, but those websites seem very radical and untrustworthy. Also, the earthquake, tsunami, and malfunction of the power plant were not on purpose; Japan Is very prone to earthquakes.

They didn't purposely dump anything. The tsunami was the cause of Fukushima.

You're not very bright are you? You think Japan did that on purpose? Try taking the 2011 earthquake & tsunami into consideration & maybe you'll stop posting brain dead ignorant comments...
