The thing about us native Irish is that we ask "everyone" where they're from... its how we open a conversation. This conversation opener was the case between strangers in Ireland long before widespread immigration to Ireland. Due to the size of the population, it was usually likely that people knew of mutual acquaintances or family relations in different parts of the country. This gave us common ground on which to have a chat - which we love doing; even with complete strangers. So, this default conversation opener is extended to all comers. We are genuinely curious about where people come from and their back story. So if you're non-Irish and you hear this question from one of us... it's is meant with openness and sincerity.

I agree with you but it's easy to know when that question isn't genuine. The test is often what people say after you tell them where you're from. ''Where are you really from?'' or ''your English is good.'' are good examples of microagression.
@ado75

@@immigrantsstories3460 I've asked people where they are originally from and not meant it in a negative way. I've also worked in another country through their language... which I can speak moderately well but not quite fluently. I've had natives of that country say "oh, your German is quite good" - I've never taken that as an insult. In fact, Germans continually asked me where I was from & why I was there... sometimes there was ribbing about being an immigrant but that's just part of life, isn't it? Humans are curious beasts... Why can't we ask people who are obviously not from your place about themselves.

@@immigrantsstories3460 that is not aggression or even microagression. Presumptuous and thoughtless perhaps. In Ireland, people are not that racially aware, since very few people ever came here before the 1990s. Completely different to England.

I'm English. In places of work, we are not allowed to ask foreign nationals where they come from. It is in most contracts. It is considered racist. Therefore, foreign nationals have an advantage, as is quite usual. They know where we are from but we are not to know where they are from. You're privileged to be able to ask where people originate from.

A few years ago while on holiday in London, my husband & I were travelling with our 4 young kids on top of a double decker bus which was fairly tense as we weren't sure of our stop in Streatham. I didn't realise I had left my handbag behind until a few teenagers stopped the bus & came running with my bag. The bus driver waited for them to get back on again. Thankyou to those lovely guys, greetings from Ireland.

Nice! I came to study English in Dublin and at the beginning I didn’t want to have international teachers, because I thought it was just worth if the teacher was Irish. But after I realised that having both teacher, Irish and international, was great! We can learn different things and I have to confess, the grammar classes with my international teachers are great :D Here I learnt that it doesn’t matter where you are from, you can be a great professional! All the best for her !

Great video, I’m from England and I can relate to you. It’s interesting how people viewed you wearing an head scarf and the curiosity around that - Asking where you’re from and the judgements that can come from it. It’s nice to hear your authentic experiences of life in London England. It is different in less diverse places where it feels more English if you know what I mean? It would be great if you could return to England and try the north to see the difference and share your experience there. I’m glad you have found your ‘happy’ place in Ireland. Keep up sharing your interesting experiences and ignore the negative comments from others. I found your video enjoyable 👍🏻

Hello and welcome 😁. Asking where you are from? Is a two pronged question - 1) your correct people don't generally know so they want to. And 2) It's a conversation starter designed to put the person who is being asked at ease. This question is asked of anyone who is not from the area. It can get Very Local lol. I hope you and your family are staying safe during the pandemic ✌️

@@immigrantsstories3460 Every country has its quota of scumbags. Ireland is no exception. You’ll also find that they are probably ‘ecumenical’ scumbags. Not only do people from your background really, really irritate them but people from _EVERY_ background that isn’t _their_ specific background really, really irritates them. Just smile and ignore them - like the rest of us do!🤗

I agree with you about London being reserved, and it's only diverse in terms of race and nationality,otherwise there isn't a great deal of freedom of expression unlike in other smaller cities of the UK

Working class British Londoners, are exactly the same as people in our other great cities. The same sense of humour, the same culture. I find this view that Londoners are different to everyone else, only stretches to the street, not in their homes. Dublin is friendly but it is all a bit superficial. When Irish people have too much alcohol, that is when the Brit bashing starts. I am of Irish descent and I know there can be an insincerity about Irish openness. On the surface it is very, “ Nice to see you, etc etc etc.” I think people in London are just less immediate. London is one of only two alpha cities in the world, the other is New York. New York is a very rude city and in world terms London is not too bad.

Considering the British are reserved, we still tolerate most of the world moving in. Our lack of friendly behaviour obviously doesn't put foreign nationals off of swamping Britain, especially England.

London WAS England but most of London looks like Africa and South Asia now. Mass immigration, little integration, no English celebrations and ULEZ .. London is pretty much lost to the obsession with diversity and multiculturalism. This is why people don’t speak or say ‘hello’ .. many speak broken English and from different countries and religions. In Ireland you see ‘Irish’ people and a sense of belonging which you don’t find often in many places in England

This girl has an attitude, a bad one. She moved to my country, Ireland, without knowing that English is the spoken language 🙄 FFS 😔 She claimed to be an English teacher, it's her profession.... Doubt she has qualifications for that. She might be a second language ' teacher' ie one of those celta or TEFL certificate people but she I sure as hell wouldn't want someone with those shifty eyes and attitude standing in front of Irish children. Pity so much was edited out, like how she came to be a single mother in Ireland? 🤥 Something very odd about her.
