I went home with a college friend and we went to Lynch for a party. I was shocked to find this little town full of black folks in Eastern Ky. We had a great time and it was a friendly community.
Black & White Is Just Color. A Man's Heart and Soul Is What Made Your Community! We Need That Today With All This Craziness. We Were All Created By The Same God.
My home town. It WAS segregated at one time but schools integrated in the 1960s. By the time i went to school we all went together, played on the same ball team, sat beside of each other in class etc. WE were all just friends. I have life long friends, black and white, from this wonderful place.
In another documentary about life in the mines, a white elder was saying: 'it didn't matter if you were black or white, at the end of the day, we all came out black from the mines'
Lynch is in a beautiful area, not doubt about it. My dad was born there almost a 100 years ago and grew up there. He took us back for Reunions several times and we saw where he lived on Main Street. He loved his home town and was so proud of it. He was active in the Methodist church on the hill and the boy scout troop. His house, thankfully, had not been torn down. When the town was created his father built the large hotel and then the homes that followed. The Steel Company had in mind all the good things that people needed to live happily: schools were separate for blacks and whites, but good education was provided for all , as well as a hospital, a library, an activity center, a store with nice things to buy. Mining is a dangerous occupation. The company did not keep a family in town if the breadwinner was killed. Someone in the family had to work. The men earned chits instead of money and the chits could only be used at the company stores. They rented the houses owned by the company. There were not black and white problems, he said. His dad said, "Down in the mines, we were all the same color and we had to depend on one another."
This is so beautiful! Brought tears to my eyes. I grew up in Oakland, CA and this resonates with me because as kids we all played together on the playground and were oblivious to any racism. We just loved one another; it was so easy.
What a Nice story! Today, more resources are available than ever before but there are more de-satisfaction. Good solid family life and education could make better life for future. It could resolve racial issues as well. I am very impressed with people in Lynch, KY.
Another thing, that church and mountain side they showed near the end of this video is a site I actually visited. The folks down there were actually nice and friendly.
I grew up in Corbin Ky and had family members that worked in mines in mountains of Eastern Ky including my grandfather. Seeing this story told so well is very refreshing. Love the positive attitudes and the home town atmosphere that can be felt through all of these amazing people. Praying for you all this morning that God will bless you and your families for many generations to come. P.S. I will be making plans to visit your area soon.
Really appreciate this video and all of the people who spoke on it! I was raised not too terribly far away in the suburbs of Philadelphia… Pennsylvania that is! Because I know there’s a Philadelphia, Mississippi! Anyway, I grew up in a fairly wealthy family, and around others that were well off… And I grew up seeing people around me, acting as though money was their God!!! And I grew up with some of that! But I left, to become a migrant farm worker, joining my sister and her boyfriend down in the orange groves of Florida to pick oranges for a living! I went out and embraced poverty I guess you could say for so many years, and searching for God also! And recognizing that I wouldn’t be able to take any of the material wealth with me when I would die & leave this earthly existence! thank you very much.
Just visited Lynch last month. I loved the place! Yes, there’s many vacant homes that need facelifts and yard work. But the view makes the visit worthwhile! People are very friendly in KY. ❤ money doesn’t make happiness, that’s the truth!😊
It brought tears to my eyes to hear the stories of these people who embody so much of that American spirit that I was never taught was part of my people's history and legacy. Thank you for telling us these stories.
I wonder if anyone knew my grandfather Lem Vernon. He had two children from his first marriage Rosa M Vernon and Betty Jean Vernon. Rosa M was my mother. A son from his second marriage Lem Vernon Jr.

In other words you work for nothing because everything that you made you gave it back because the company own everything ,But you are living but your living a great life because everyone gets along I have to say you are living in God country you got everything. Hold on to it..
My grandfather mined coal in Lynch. Retired in the early 70’s. He was able to save to send both my mom and aunt to nursing school. I’m not sure how he did it, but he was really proud that his kids were able to get better jobs than he had.
