Sweden was neutral during WWII but was trading with both sides of the war, used its territory as a crossing point for German troops going from Occupied Norway to Finland to fight the Soviets and having volunteers join the Finnish Army during the Winter War 1939-1940 and the Continuation War 1941-1944 during their fight against the invading Soviets.

For any underlying 'dysfunctions' in Scandinavian Life-- this quaint video STILL Holds an far-better Life, than the one existing in Stockholm Today. A PRIME rational to 'return' to a Thoreau-style of Life.

You must never have visited Stockholm then. Quaint and nostalgic is not necessarily the same as better.
@Vorexia

Not really. What they show here is either Stockholm’s central regions - the beautiful and rich parts, which is equally beautiful today. If you got to the outskirts of Stockholm, you would begin to see more poverty. And then, going out to the rurals, things would be pretty shit. This recording was very selective of where they recorded as they only highlighted great things - however Sweden was a troubled country. Much of the wealth was centralized to the cities while the farmers lived in worse conditions. The infrastructure was poor and unmaintained and our social welfare was minimum. Meanwhile, a huge chunk of our national budget went to the military due to the constant German threat. Sweden wasn’t a bad country, but it was not as flawless as this film makes it seem to be. The 20th century looks great on tape, but there is always an untold story behind the scenes. A sad story. I will always think that there is no better time to be alive than now. Sweden, and the entire world, has made so much progress. Not all developments have been good, but in general things have gotten so much better.

Svennen Adde Oh brother, I feel the same. My great grandmother lost her husband and all the three kids to the Spanish Flu. After mourning for years, she eventually met my great grandfather in Skelleftå and they got married and lived happily... until the 1929 stock crash. Then they lost virtually all of their wealth and were forced to sell their property and live in a homeless shelter without running water or heating. They were fucking impoverished, could barely afford essentials such as clothes and food. My grandfather, who was just a kid, had to run out to the forests during the morning to go fetch branches to burn as firewood. If they ran out of firewood, they were dead. Additionally, my grandfather and his siblings walked 3km to school in a dangerous -40 degrees celsius wearing only light and ragged clothes. They had to hurry up, because if they were too slow they’d freeze to death. My grandfather’s ambition was to go to university, however my great grandparents were far too poor to afford university. So he proceeded to be so good at school he was one of the lucky few who got a scholarship. This was a time of harsh winters, of poor sanitation, of poverty, of disasters in all forms of ways. The first half of the 20th century was a miserable period. On top of that, Sweden was one of the poorer countries in Europe. Sweden today, only three generations later, has universal, free and efficient healthcare and modern medicine. Disease outbreaks are very limited. All stages of education are free, we are industrialized and no household lacks the essentials. It is one of the most prosperous nations in the world. In today’s Sweden, all the difficulties and misfortunes that my family experienced during the 1910s-1930s are damn near impossible to experience. And I consider that to be an step forward, not a step back. Sure, things look happy and organized on tape. But behind the camera, like I said, is a sad story. Every person walking down those streets had their difficulties, they had their dissatisfaction with the government. There has ALWAYS been difficulties and hard times, the only real difference is that the pains caused by these hardships can’t be properly portrayed on documents. You have to actually experience it to understand it. A lot of people don’t understand this and assume that there was no problems in the first place back then. Which is completely and utterly false. It is much like, for example, visiting a country for two days as a tourist and then deciding it is the best country ever and you need to move there. You’ve seen the beaches, the fancy hotels and the incredible cultural heritage. And you based your entire opinion on that. I hope that one day, people will realize that Sweden indeed is going through a crisis but we will definitely overcome it, as we and the rest of the world have overcome other things. This fear of the nation being burned down is frankly just paranoia.

@@Vorexia Fucking word up! There are so many people sitting at home hearing about the increase in crime who try to fuel and reassure themselves of their (sometimes mildly racist) opinions by watching videos like these. Videos that are meant to be interesting and educational and not looking at them with a grain of salt, instead taking them at face value. They see the good neighborhoods of Stockholm (which are good neighborhoods today) and make an uninformed observation about life being better then. Despite not even having the experience or the knowledge of how it really was. Textbook example of looking at the past through rosy glasses. I just don't get how people can be this dense. Do these swedes look outside their windows? Do they see the war zone that they claim exists? Thought not. Crime is up today, but back then some people had to steal to just get by. We were that poor!

Naturally, a travel propaganda film would show the best side. I have read the Per Anders Fogelstrom "Stockholm Series" and the working classes were consumed for the benefit of the better-off. So much misery and wretchedness in the former days! Prosperity is never shared equally anywhere, not just in Sweden. It's so much better now, apparently.

I'm getting really tired of these kind of comments. I'm very interested in history and especially Swedish history since I am Swedish myself. And on every video of old footage from Sweden I see so many comments like this saying things like "look at Sweden now, muslim immigrants have destroyed the country" or calling Sweden "Swedistan". I don't know how many of these people who say this are Swedes themselves but most people probably don't have a clue about the situation here and have just heard that Sweden have taken too many immigrants during the immigration crisis in 2015. Sure, Sweden have taken way too many immigrants in proportion to the size of the country and what is possible to handle but that doesn't mean that the country is destroyed now. There are a lot of problems with the immigration but they are possible to solve and to say those kind of things like Sweden is a muslim country or mocking Sweden for taking too many immigrants is very immature and ignorant. All rich countries have changed drastically since the 20th century so to point out only one thing over and over is very ignorant. Sweden is a great country and I am a proud Swede, those who don't know anything about it, please shut up.
