@David. I too was a child of the 1950s in the UK. I smiled at you mentioning the gas-powered washing machine! It was my big sister's job to turn the agitator handle and I remember that. My mother's parents lived way out in the country. They didn't have electricity until the late 1950s and then only on the ground floor. It was 1975 before they had electricity upstairs. No bathroom of course, it was a tin bath in front of the fire on a Sunday evening. They had an outside toilet down the back path, straight into a pit which had to be dug out every few months. The ashes from the fire went down the pit so it didn't really smell at all. My grandmother's oven was built into the chimney above the fire. There was no way to tell what temperature it was, but she made the most delicious cakes and pastry just by instinct of when the hole in the wall (the oven) was hot enough. They kept chickens and rabbits for meat, and grew all their own vegetables. They also had bee hives for honey. We lived in town but would take a bus out to see them regularly. We had to be careful not to miss the buss connection or we'd be stranded in the middle of nowhere! We always came home ladened with fresh food. At home our toilet was in the yard, but then we got "fancy" and knocked a door through between the toilet and the scullery. But it was still freezing cold! Somehow, we grew up content, happy and very hardy. I can't ever remember my siblings or I complaining about our lot in life. I would not swap my materially "poor" childhood for anything they have today. We may have been poor but we were happier I think.

Me too. Am 64 1/2 and my mom passed on 12 yrs ago. I still missed her dearly. When we were 4 kids, she did the cooking , cleaning, and hand washing our laundries by hands. I still can’t fantom how can she wash the jeans for my uncle. Their heavy when wet. Her home cooking is amazingly delicious. We’re also 7 siblings with her as a single mother. A very good mother of ours. So dearly missed.

@@Mar.1634 they mean simple as in i think no to little tech, idk if they have constant power or phone lines either. Also there isnt the hustle and bustle of a city around them, no skyscrapers or large office buildings. You wont hear sirens or car horns. You dont have smart tv's or smart fridges etc etc and so on. It is simple in that aspect, as it is you and the environment it seems for the most part. In no way does that make it easy, actually the opposite as it seems they dont have many of the things that make modern day society so labor free when getting things you want or need. While if she wants or needs something it seems as though itll be taxing on both her wallet and body to get it

@S G and? Most men do to, instead of hunting to provide meals for the family or whatever you want them to do. It's just how the life is in big cities, for better or worse.

@S G I can tell from your comment that you would prefer women to stay at home with kids and for "traditional gender roles" to come back. It's bad for women to focus on a career. Am I wrong? Because your comment comes off that way.

@S G sorry to hear that you felt bad about working and not being a stay at home mom. My mom was a stay at home mom and I feel terrible for her now. All she did was take care of the house and kids. No career. Minimum friends, the only friends she had were other stay at home moms, the only thing they had in common were kids. Seeing mom my that way my sister and I worked so hard for a career and guess what, we are both busy women and happy in life. We are able to spend time with people who share the same interest as us. Never will I stay at home with my child and leave my career. Also a therapist, by the way, just a different point of view. Funny we impose women to stay at home and shame them if they don’t, saying they will get depressed etc (and from experience that depression comes from gender roles society imposes) men on the other hand are seen as manly going to work and shouldn’t stay at home with the kids.

@Polite Comments On Current Affairs It was liberation. It finally gave women the possibility of running away from abusive husbands, it allowed them not to be dependent on some males, it allowed them to have CHOICE. But men will never understand that. Because men were never treated worse, men always could get bank accounts without the approval of their spouse, men always could get an education.
