Bravo for doing an episode about one of my favourite Greek writers. It is an honour, this is a very important book. You should also check Pyramid 67 by Renos Apostolidis, who was drafted during the Greek civil war but never fired a single bullet, staying true to his convictions, instead he wrote a book, even while under fire by the partisans.

Although a Velizelist initially, S. Myrivilis will become a vocal supporter of Ioannis Metaxas during the 30s, even with the Life In The Tomb banned. Metaxas regime appointed him as a chief librarian at the Library of the Hellenic Parliament, as a small reward, while he continued to work as a columnist in various conservative newspapers until his death. During the Greek Civil War and its aftermath, Myrivilis was staunch anti-communist, mostly through passionate articles. Oddly enough, it seems that he didn't like the Greek military Junta of 1967 much.

@qasemsoleimani9443
@qasemsoleimani9443 6 лет назад
Just for the sake of my nerdy precision, it was named after Lesbos (the island) and not Mytilene (the capital). In Turkish, the capital and the island share the same name. For a somewhat relevant trivia, Djemal Pasha, the least famous but also quite competent of the Three Pashas was born in Mytilene.

How were soldiers paid? Cash? Into their account in their home country? In what currency were they paid? If a soldier was taken prisoner did he get back pay afterwards? If he died as a prisoner what happened to the amount due? If a soldier was due to receive pay and he was killed, what happened to the amount due? .

One of the best books I have ever read, best war/anti-war book for me. I have always wondered about the author and if the protagonist was real or not. I didnt found any info on the internet (maybe there is some in Greek language but I;m not Greek), Thank you very much TGW team for this video.
@kostas68
@kostas68 2 года назад
In the original Greek book, the author wrote in the introduction that the protagonist was a acquainted of him who was accidentally killed by a French corporal during the capture of a Bulgarian trench and that he found his letters and decided to publish them many years after the end of the war. However, I believe the protagonist is a fictional character and the author just wrote his personal experiences, because the writing style is exactly the same he uses in his other works.

Sratis Myrivilis. I didn’t know about him. Thanks. I’ll check him up. His background reminds me of Italian (should one add Venetian?) poet Biago Marin, just because he too was born in a central power empire - in his case the Austria Hungary empire - but after the war his home island was transferred to a national state. And, btw, now when I’m writing. Even if I’m Scandinavian, I have a distant relative who was killed in the war. My grandma had an uncle who emigrated I think in 1916, to the US. Then he joined the army and never come back.

Just a follow-up on my earlier comment. Two scenes stand out in my memory: In one, a Greek soldier gets up in the middle of a dark night seeking to relieve himself at the latrine trench but stumbles, falls in, and drowns in it. His commanding officer then writes to his loved ones how he died heroically in defense of the motherland and is being awarded a decoration for his brave act. In another scene , a battalion of Russian soldiers camps for the night at the Greek camp and one young bibliophile Russian officer tries to tell the Greeks how they are beloved by the Russians in ancient Greek! As they march off the next day, the author imagines a small, solitary, snow covered house somewhere in the Russian steppe far away with a young woman inside awaiting the return of her loved one. It moved me to tears.

It's more like a "sequel" of "Life in the Tomb", the hero returns from the Greco-Turkish War, but the war is in the backround, the main theme is the reintegration of a veteran to the ordinary life after the war... (and it was made a TV series in 1979)
