For nearly 40 years, Brazil's Landless Workers' Movement (MST) has been fighting the concentration of landownership among the country's elite through the direct occupation and settlement of fallow lands. TRNN contributor Michael Fox reports from MST land in the state of Paraná, where landless workers have built their own homes, schools, farms, and cooperatives.

I love MST . ❤💯👏 From the bottom of my heart I wish to see land reformation to happen very soon. Everyone deserves it's own land to work and produce with dignity. Proudly I'm customer of MST organic products. ❤💯👍👏

When you get into the topic of education and curriculum I would be interested to know what their curriculum is and where they get it. It's not like all curriculum is the same. Much of it is ideology and or based in ideology IMO. For instance, they are studying college curriculum? How about history and economics? Psychology? etc.

"There's no such a thing as impartiality. Everyone is oriented by an ideological basis. The question is: is your ideological basis inclusive or exclusionary?" (Paulo Freire)

@williams.1980 Год назад
@@RenatoCarvalhoS actually I said ideology not impartiality and it's true that some ideologies exclude socialism to the extent that excluding socialism is the main tenant of the ideology. Then there are some ideologies that are very inclusive to fascism. Look at the US government's record with na*is in the UN. They are also very inclusive to na*is in other forums.

@@williams.1980, my point is that you said that "much [curriculum] is ideology and or based in ideology." What Freire is saying here is that everything we humans create (including, obviously, EVERY curriculum of EVERY school) is oriented by an ideological basis. So, yes, the curriculum of MST schools is based on MST's ideology. As much as the curriculum of a catholic school is based on catholic ideology, the curriculum of public schools in the USA is based on the dominant ideology in the USA, and so on. When some school curriculum seems "neutral" or exempt from ideology, that only means that it is a close match to our own ideology, not that it is actually free from an ideological basis. Similarly, when we express concern about the ideological basis of the curriculum of a particular type of school, that only means that we sense that that ideological basis is too divergent from our own. Once we realize that, the only question that remains is the one that Freire poses. And, in this particular case, the response is that MST's ideology is inclusive, for its ultimate goal is to include marginalized people back in the whole of society.

@@RenatoCarvalhoS Yeah, I pretty much agree with those ideas about ideology being like an accent. If it is your own accent then it isn't an accent. I didn't mean that "much" curriculum is ideological. I mean that a lot of curriculum is steeped in ideology of a certain slant. Obviously history can be very ideological, social sciences can be very ideological IMO. Obviously economics can be very ideological. So this is something that I believe is very important to identify and understand. For instance when it comes to history, having a balanced curriculum as opposed to one heavily slanted towards capitalism and imperialism would be better IMO. And in economics, having a curriculum that is balanced when it comes to classical and neo-classical rather than one that is neo-liberal indoctrination.

While I understand the sentiments being expressed, I suspect that most of the land is not suitable for farming and would further the stripping of the rainforest to create marginal land that would end up back in the hands of the wealthy.

You just simplified this question in the most wrong way possible. The MST not only does not occupy land in the Amazon, but on the land it occupies it applies sustainable agroculture practices, creating an ecosystem that dialogues with nature. And no, it makes no sense for the MST to occupy land that is not suitable for farming, since this is the economic activity that maintains the movement's existence.
