School Counselor Lakia Wilson shows us how a crumbling school building and lack of staff and supplies makes it almost impossible to provide Detroit children an equal education. Add your voice: aft.to/Detroit #SaveDetroitKids
+pandagames One can't "take" your job from you. You can't be working at Wal-Mart and have someone just show up and "take" your job. If there are people with needs then there are plenty of jobs out there. If there is a community that doesn't have a quickee-mart, then opening a quickee-mart creates a few more jobs. Same with opening up a haircut place, a donut shop, a dollar store, etc.
+MikeSPx24bj9 thats not what im saying 50 years ago how was it for black people hmmmm? And now they still get treated like shit by some people and a white person will get chosen over a black person in a job interview in some places
snail makes me sad that these kids want an education to support their family's and kids in my school hate their parents and appreciate of what they have
These kids are 5x as mature as I was when I was there age. You can just look at them and tell how smart they are. I would do anything to switch with them and give them my life.
Dawg I go to this school way before the gym thing and everything else. We were actually a civilized school, and the teachers were trying their best to help us learn. So don't come on here doing that when you don't know half of what we're doing lmao.
Praise GOD !!! I went to Balch Elementary Grade School from 1960- 1964, and it was such a beautiful building back then, and after looking it up a couple of years ago, it STILL is .!! It was the only grade school back then with a swimming pool.!!! We had a real nice track and field area, and an awesome playground.!! I LOVED that school, for I had excellent teachers who would give treats to the fastest runners, the best speller in spelling bees, and the A-plus students, of whom I happened to be one of.!! I checked and it is now a community center, and I plan to go there one day to reflect on when school was FUN, and a life-saver for me.!!
The principle of Spain elementary was charged with taking bribes as part of the DPS kickback scheme right after he was "blessed" by Ellen with all that money.
@@Joe_Mama661 god DAMN I'm going to hell for laughing at that but it doesn't matter because I was going to hell anways. That went from 0-100 in an INSTANT lmao
@@Joe_Mama661 I don't think that's true. First of all, they're a counselor and not a principal. But I just searched them and found them and are now the executive vice president of Detroit Federation of teachers

I live in Farmington hills and this is a suburban area we have tennis courts and performing arts and many clubs because they’ve put so much work into our area I used to live in Detroit and my old school was shut down cause we barely even had money for school lunches...prioritizing is key
At least they have a counsellor. My school in Chicago didn't. Their nurse's office wouldn't even give me daily lunchtime medicine, because they were so understaffed. I had two allergic reactions as a result of not receiving that medicine. The worst thing was, a girl in my school got an allergic reaction and died in an ambulance because her Epi pen wasn't in school, and they wouldn't give her someone else's in the ambulance. They still refused to give me lunchtime medicine. My second reaction occurred then. At the end of the year, we moved. Those kids have it bad, but at least they aren't dying from a lack of medical care in schools. My school was rated as above average in Illinois.
Same here, I was in Chicago as a kiddo and we never had a pool or a gate like that school (of course I still feel terrible for those kids at that school, I'm just saying there are other schools just like this in chicago)
@@godspd7775 there’s a school nearby my town that has 3 gymnasiums with 2000 students along with a LOT of teachers. It is a 2 story building as well. It also has a goddamn dance studio that’s the size of 2 classrooms. It’s a $70M school
Studies show that spending per student doesn't always improve schooling (see:Atlantic City) but fr if this place don't have any ink or books someone give em like $100,000 thats probably more than all the teachers get in a year
Since when do blue voters value actual education? Blue freaks want to teach CRT which preaches math is a form of white supremacy. You can't make this BS up, man. The average blue voter has the collective IQ of a dog turd.
+joyariffic What money ? Haven't you heard? the damn city is a ghost town. There is no money even flowing. The tap is dry those people are much better off to just relocate to some other city then to sit there an complaint over issues that are never going to get fixed.
i dont know about that but i am pretty damn sure that 35 million aint gonna save the city. They are saving money by cutting down traffic lights and other necessary utilities. Anybody can save 35 dollars a day if they dont eat or use electricity.
+Shawn Jones You're a piece of shit dude. The last time I checked the problem cited here was when the auto industry collapsed. This is a problem about money.
Because for most white people who decide elections, these conditions don't affect them. So it's a vicious complicated racist struggle ever since the Civil rights movement to lock black people into bad conditions.
@Brand of Sacrifice I linked something to prove this it didn't send, but what I said is factual. A lot of that incompetent leadership in the 70s was racist.
@@dcmuggamuga407 Well, that's not what I said. But white people making more money is no stereotype. The median income for white people is higher than that of black people in the U.S. I'm not being racist or problematic it's the truth.
I volunteered in one of these types of schools in Detroit and I have to say those kids are the most gracious, bright, loving, and amazing kids I’ve ever met. My heart breaks thinking about when they go home and don’t have the right necessities such as food to eat.
I just want to say that these teachers and parents deserve respect for encouraging students and genuinely caring for them beyond what is required. Respect!
This is so upsetting to me. My father went to Spain and he said it was a very good school with a great learning environment. He tears up when talking about the school now. He worked for the school board and tried to get more funding to help the school but time after time it did not succeed. Spain deserves better. Detroit Public Schools deserve better. My family moved for a hope of better education. Still in state. We drive past Spain every once and a while and I shed a tear. It’s sad that kids have no playground, or gym to run around in.
I live in a suburb only a few miles away from out Detroit. In our schools, they literally throw away money. At my high school they’re literally moving the tennis courts from one section of the school to another. They’re basically one chromebook for every kid in our grade. It makes to sad to see this inequality of wealth where I live.
I live in a suburb of Chicago also, and I came from a lower class Chicago public school and its sad how unequal our education is, it’s all about the taxes the people pau
It just makes me realise how privileged I am (For everyone saying I don't know what privileged means the privileged definition is having special rights ,advantages or immunities . I wasn't just saying I'm privileged because I go to a better school My family is wealthy and I get to go on holiday and experience culture in other countries therefore I am at an advantage to people in my school who haven't been to other countries and even if I was just talking about it to do with school I go to a better school than they do . My school has better facilities than there's .Meaning I am at an advantage .)
Esme Hayden you’re not “privileged” and the other person who said “same” isn’t “privileged” too. Just because you feel bad doesn’t automatically make you a privileged person. Be grateful for your parents for sending you to a better school and be grateful for how hard they work for you. You might say that I’m saying it’s wrong to feel bad but that’s not the case. You are not privileged for going to a better school or just plain out feeling bad.
Zi - my personal opinion, yes I was privileged to attend a better school, as it led to far more post secondary opportunities (and beyond). It's ok to say so, again in my personal opinion.
Leaving aside how this lack of resources affects these kids' education directly, I think it's in a way far worse that they are made to feel hopeless and betrayed at such a young age. It is even more important than being educated in specific subjects to be conveyed a certain positive or at least not unnecessarily negative outlook on life. Being betrayed by their own society in regards to very basic needs such as education will render them crushed for probably forever if left alone.
Made me appreciate my school more. My friends were complaining about how they wanted some new installments to our playground when we literally have a big field with a track, water fountains you usually see at colleges, we have money for trips like South Korea, and Washington. Our school is well clean, sanitary, and we have technology in our hands. I feel so much appreciation for my elementary/middle school
I live in Louisiana and just realized how privileged I am. My school isn’t rich, but we have a football and softball field. We can also afford to take trips to big universities in the state. Also, every year the 8th graders take a trip to Washington, d.c. The fact that these kids don’t even have a proper gym makes we want to give all of my school’s stuff to them. They’re the ones who need it.
I am so sorry for these kids. I always thought my middle school was hell on earth, but I had every tool I needed to succeed. Programs, classrooms, teachers, extracurriculars, sports, everything. I could never imagine not having access to these things which makes me realize how privileged I really am. This needs to change.
@CaliforniaCheez if you were in those little kids situations your opinion would be much different! This is rude and really pissed me off by what you said. Some of those parents do everything for thier children. And that's the best school they can go to because people like you don't have to deal with these problems. So please do not tell me those parents don't care about their children. And maybe the community can't help very much because of money issues. Please do not assume. Know the facts first. 🙄😡😡
Flute Player Victoria A LOT of dps schools don’t have art or music awards “we don’t have the money for it “ apparently we are broke. Wanted to update My last text. The expectations for dps students are low and most of us feed into this which continues the never ending cycle. Schools like Spain elementary will always existed even out side of dps but no one really do anything about it 🤷♀️. Society has failed us and we end up repeating a currently never ending cycle
MDL Media I live here and this has been going on since I was in first grade I now go to one of the best high schools in my city and they don’t have ink so we have to figure out a way to print out our assignments or right them up
Lottie Robinson And then there is my over privilledged school that doesn't care about students. Horrible teachers. This year a teacher slept with a student.
Those kids are the strongest kids I have ever seen. In the face of corruption like that it is amazing to see those little kids pull through. I really hope that they find just one opportunity to find a better life around the nation. God bless to all of those kids.
Chigozirim Ifebi well yes that is true but as a black folks who gets all A's in his classes. This is not so true. First of all from personal experience all of the other black folks in my schools average is a 70-81% but also from scientific research it was figured out that a average black student turns in about 92% of their homework and their average is a C in math B in many others and a C in both social studies in science so their overall grade is a B- which is not bad but not as smart as the rest of the world but personally I think everyone is smart just it is harder for some to bring it out
The sad part is that the reason why these grades are so bad is because they don't have the material too be taught these type of things. I'm fortunate enough to be an African American living in a wealthy area near Detroit. My parents grew up and Detroit working their way out of poverty to be able to give me the life I have today. My goal in life is too be able to be successful and come back to my home town of Detroit and help these kids thrive too their best potential. Hopefully more people have this goal, not just too help Detroit, but to help other cities like this too fight for better education and materials.
Shahin Dijagah man I hope these kids do better. I'm black American girl turning 13 and I'm doing really good in school and actually kinda sorta better than the white kids in my class. I don't listen to that IQ crap because I'm getting A's and B's and that's all I need to know. thBut still I hope these kids can get better it's sad. And yes everyone is smart in their way.
I'm glad those days are over...living in Detroit as a kid...went to their schools as well...barely had supplies then....now Im 22..married..left the hood and I'm a cdl truck driver..couldn't ask for more
The US government: let’s solve problems that are happening in our country! Citizens : well maybe start helping low income schools or helping low income families The US government: *takes a deep breath* I don’t think that’s possible
Lost my Wig the government is really messed up cuz they could use some of the money to help low income school and families when the government has a trillion dollars!!
Mikeduke324 okayyy sooo if the government was trillions of dollars of debt they why would the government be still around and a thing and use that money for Medicare and social security and other things in ,Search how much money they have and what they use that money for
Mike is correct about the government having severe national debt, it is a fact that you could look for. Please do not have a strong opinion about issues you do not understand.
@@winterxmm3881 Because if they did get in a debt crisis the rest of the world will have a problem.as well. America has one of the largest debts in the whole world. If they were to go bankrupt then the whole worlwide bank system would have a problem as well , because they are in debt to all major world wide banks. The only reason they get away with it is because it has a large population. Thus when the debt is devided by each living person it is not as much as it first seems.
Mike Swivel the reason they are that way is because they don’t have the materials and opportunities to be brought up as a successful human being. The ones who do make it through have put in lots of effort to change their culture of living. There is no need to stereotype a video like this.
Mike Swivel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_intelligence "Currently, there is no non-circumstantial evidence that these differences in test scores have a genetic component" I have no idea where you got the "BLACK AM IQ IS 85 ON AVERAGE ALSO" from, but it looks utterly false. You shouldn't be insulting others' intelligence when you write the way you do.
Seeing all that empty, unused space was sad to see, but the band room broke my heart. Band was my favorite part of being in school. Those kids deserve so much better.
*seeing all the abandoned instruments made me really sad. i’m in the band program at my school and it’s a very fun and enjoyable experience that i would want them to experience too :(( in fact, you can see how it’s fun on my recent video*
+John Snake Actually, your stupid party's free trade deals ruined it by destroying good factory jobs, If under republican control, the people would be poor AND stupid.
I miss the real Detroit, the great Detroit zoo, the rides through the amazingly lit city, the poster child of American civilization, the American Detroit
@@PactusPandaCactus Agreed, the politics has nothing to do with Detroit's demise. It was when all the car factories moved to China, creating what we know as the "Rust belt". It's not just Detroit, but Gary, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Columbus, ETC. Places that weren't the cleanest, but where people worked together to get us the cars we drive in our daily lives. Since they left, so did the workers, and gangs moved in tagging up every street sign and underpass in sight, and leaving the city to decay. Des Moines, which is near where I live, is also a small victim of this. Our Firestone factories are still in tact, but all of the grain elevators and textile mills went abandoned from the decline of the railroad. It's not as bad as some of the more eastern states, but places like Norwoodville and South Town have increased in drug trafficking, and everything just looking depressed. Then again, I think just about any major city has a slummy area in town.
@@theoneandonlyrustyshaklefo6256 Not saying they aren't. I'm sure there's a reason why people still live there versus Detroit. I just know those cities got gangs and bad slums all around. Solution is to just demolish the abandoned places and add newer nicer jobs to drive out the druggies.
I was born and raised in Detroit. I know this school (I didn't attend, but I had a friend who did) and plenty more in Detroit like it. There were times when I couldn't go onto the playground because there was an "issue". Times when I couldn't go to school for a full week or two because of "building issues" being fixed. And the many, Many, MANY days when I and my older brother had to bring sacks of basic food home with us because lunch wasn't available. The schools in Detroit are still bad, if not worse now as they were 10-20 years ago when I was in elementary school/middle school. I was in absolute *SHOCK* when I first started going to a school in Madison Heights where the lunchroom was HUGE. There was room for a band AND a choir to have separate rooms! The gym was massive and NOT tore up! Classrooms didn't have a few windows boarded. Man...the government really has to step up.
***** Detroit the actual place would probably be inhabitable as soon as it gets a bit worse. As places break down the Gud Kids will be taking chemicals everywhere, buildings with toxic chems will quit filtering. Im assuming a lot of the land and water would get poisoned from a real collapse. I bet the people in charge falsify water quality tests so they can be lazy and not clean it and stuff. It already looks poisoned.
***** They need to be taught how to help themselves. Without a whip I hope. Although France started trying to train Africa 1000 years ago and they havent progressed a bit. Send em to Israel and let their friends teach them how to act
Mike Swivel are you serious, please stop repeating bullshit you've heard somewhere to make yourself feel better if theres any evidence of what you just said its because the "black schools" are shite already from lack of funding resulting in a lesser education. please please study this yourself your obviously someone who can get behind a particular belief system so why not support (other) struggling people rather than hate them we all need help but try not to get envious and hate when others are voicing that need, there is no difference between us. we need to work together.
i use to live in detroit as a child and my elementary school was alot like this but a little less depressing. i always hated my school and then i saw this, it breaks my heart to see a school with such large lack of supplies,
Ellen DeGeneres and Lowe’s gave them $500k on her show and she said that it was “her biggest, most generous giveaway ever.” On the same show, Justin Bieber said that he’d donate $1 from every ticket from his now finished Purpose World Tour. They set up a fundraiser on Ellen’s website, and there has since been another video on them playing in the gym. Hope this helps :)
This breaks my heart. My school isn’t amazing, I’ll be honest. We have really crappy policies and some of the teachers are extremely rude. However that doesn’t even compare to this. Not having a gym, not having any music… and as a band kid that part especially broke my heart. Sometimes that was the only reason I came to school. I had heard of a Detroit school that was in rough shape from a tv show, but I didn’t know there were more of them. I hope they all can get what they need to, at least, make sure it’s safe for everyone and keep everyone as happy as possible.
I would love a swimming pool in my school. I live in australia in the hot heat and my school doesnt even have proper airconditioning. Apparently there was a rat problem too? One time it was so hot i couldnt even breathe. I didnt even know schools had pools tbh-
I went to a very posh preparatory school (nursery to year 8) and it had a pool, gym, huge sport fields, etc, and I hated it then I left but now I realise that I should have been grateful because I was so privileged.
This seriously makes me cry. I never realized how bad other places have it. I'm lucky enough to go to a high school with a large gym and good classes with proper renovations and thousands of dollars worth of quality equipment at my disposal. These poor babies have it so rough. I'm so sorry.
I went to good schools all throughout my childhood. We had field trips, honors classes, books, computers, and materials. I even went to a private school. It was fun! But, this is sad. We gotta do better, America!
This actually breaks my heart. My school is constantly getting donations, and I'm sure that we could lend them some i just hope that this school is doing better now.
Some kids in romania dont have food and sleep in the cold. A big part of romanias population is in poverty. This looks way better then most romanian schools.
STFU homie. Romania is poor overall while Detroit has the possibility of giving money to education. The problem is the people who own the money not if they have money or not because you can argue the same thing for like 50 countries.
One of my teachers quit her job, and that left my class with more than 20 confused substitutes a month. A lot of kids get confused, and grades aren't the best either. It was never our fault..... The past students in our grade were really bad, but we weren't. Yet those kid's action affected our education. No teachers wants to work in are school full time because of them....
I’m from clarkston Michigan- an hour from Detroit and an hour from flint. It’s the suburbs and when she said that they suburbs don’t have those problems she’s absolutely 100% right. It was never like this. Those kids and teachers are the strongest people for putting up with that
this is why I aspire to be a teacher a kids happiness is as important as their education these teachers are amazing they try their best given the circumstance they are in. I do hope this school and others which are in similar situations get the money they need to improve the quality of school life for the kids.
Please America help this school,by doing that the children will benefit. My wife and I were in Detroit in 2014 driving around that great city we felt very sad, hope things will improve. Cheers from Australia. Hope to get back one day.
I'm glad it went to a school in Wisconsin least you have everything you need for the classes and you have a building that's in good shape Detroit schools buildings very bad the kids are hurting the most
+Cam D i live near this place i was lucky and was born right outside of the city and these kids have to go to school because its the only way for these kids to support there family instead of being exposed to violence i love my city and hope one day it will be as great as it used to be (:
These kids deserve better schools 💖 I hope the officials do more in Detroit to make this happen. God bless these kids. They are beautiful. They are amazing. They are precious. They deserve more.
I live in Rhode Island and the school I’m at is really old, our tax funds are kinda messed up and stuff so our school doesn’t get enough funding to fix problems such as heating and all that. But we do get enough money to fund for proper supplies, equipment and courses so us students can get the education we need. The high school I’m going too is the exact same way, some of their courses get the supplies from the state because our state can afford to support these programs. With that being said, I’m so grateful to be in the district I am even if it isn’t perfect. I hope these kids get a better education and the school gets get the money they need to repair everything. God bless 🥺❤️
We were broke, ive gone to spain since i was in pre-k this is my 9th year there, and spain when i first got there was amazing i mean if u look up spain school band detroit u will find us well them playing in those bands like pros. Ellen gave us money 2 years ago and everything is better, the gym is beautiful u would have yl go on Ellen's channel to see it. And we use our instruments and have a band teacher but i wish we had a teacher like we did back in the day whose respectible but yeah main part of me writing this is for u to know what we're doing now in 2018
This made me so sad. I work with elementary school kids and we're fortunate that we have a nice elementary school for them. Every kid deserves a good education in a school that provides them with what they need!
Julian Grant what privilege exactly, because this shit school isn't like this because of there skin. It's because the fucking town is ran by Democrats. White privilege don't exist
Detroit is a run down part of michigan, like Flint I live in Fenton and some of my family live in Detroit and it's not sad or depressing this stuff is normal to me. Most kids go to Fenton schools and Grand Blanc so Detroit doesn't have all the funding from the students/government to provide good or great schooling.
