Life in my laavu at -33c.
An overnighter in these conditions is one thing, and many people do them without any great challenge.
Living in it for a week, is another thing altogether.
We had one case of flash hypothermia during the temp drop, successfully managed in situ and the bloke went on to have a capital time fullfilling his dream in the Arctic Glisten.
Kiitos Topio.
Well done Bushcraft UK - Sub Zero Crew. All the 3s!
Let me know if you want me to focus on any specific topics in your individual logbook write ups.
eg Fire making, aesthetics, iso management, technical skills, snow understanding/skills, shelter, stove management, managing self joy/work/ admin, or whatever you like. I use Dixie Dansercouer book as a baseline/reference.

❤❤❤ Back home already. All good. This time I even had a stove and a fire. Last time it was six weeks of this with a gas cooker. That was hard. Haha. But I was moving all the time, touring on skis, only stopping to eat and sleep in the tent.

Thank you for your video, it is harder than some of your viewers can believe! I live in Western Canada, I have had the pleasure of living and playing in the Canadian Arctic, you have to learn to respect long term cold!

Yep, at a certain combination of cold, humidity and wind, your body just knows it is in mortal peril. Good to be able to notice that in time. 😁 I love it, and totally trust The Cold.

I'll give you a thumbs up as you're cold, as well as for the information on flash hypothermia? Not heard of that before
@susannewilliams

It happens in the very cold below -20c under heavy exertion with not enough food. Unlike normal hypothermia where your body core cools down slowly and deeply over time, because it is SO cold, you get very cold very quickly, and so there are none of the usual warning signs. No mumbles, stumbles, fumbles, grumbles, etc. Just sudden incapacitation, a turning in on one self, and an inability to get warm without external heat. Finding themselves suddenly unable to do basic tasks and feeling very tired, the person makes the supreme effort, puts up the tent and then does the reasonable thing and just punches out and gets into the sleeping bag, but without a hot drink and still in damp clothes. This means they are unable to warm the sleeping bag. Too exhausted to shiver, having used up thousands of calories, and wet, they go into a deep sleep. People with a Near Death Experience due to flash hypothermia report that they could just choose to leave the body and die or to stay. That the gateway was open for a long time, no hurry to choose, but you could just check out of the body anytime. Diabetics have known life threatening complications with flash hypothermia also.

Good to hear things went smoothly out there Susanne & Sub Zero Crew! Last time while our chat we only had -18C and I spent my night safely in warm VW Transporter car in night shift compared to your -30C in tent and I became sick of nasty flu. So what went wrong with me!? 🤣 🤧🤒 Hope to see more of these videos!

There's no doubt with all your experience with extreme cold this has to be the most extreme to have put yourself in! Even with the little stove, preparation is so important to be able to survive this kind of climate! I assume its in your nature to do these types of daring excursions for the challenge and pure pleasure! We look on with amazement!

The most extreme was alone, no stove, no fire, just me, the tent and a gas cooker, for 6 weeks skiing in the arctic, Hardangervidda plateau. Temps mainly around -20c with a week of -30c to -47c and winds to 55kph. (Beast of the east storm) Skiing the distances with the sled everyday, setting up tent, 4 hours of snow melting and cooking only freeze dried food, then sleep, and packing up in the morning. This trip was 5km from town, I had a stove hot tent, 2 nights of cold, in a gang of 9, with endless fresh food and great weather Much easier.

I had gone there to make a speed record attempt on the Odda-Finse Route, 137km/3700m climb. I was on a training segment with sled and kite when the Beast of the East came in. Wow, that was a weather. 🎉🎉🎉

@@susannewilliams So, in other words this was a picnic compared to what you had already experienced! Remarkable!

The challenges were different. When there is a mixed group there are so many more factors and dynamics involved and things get critical very quickly. Solo, you may have less resources, but you also have less chaos/variables.. 🎉
