Life is Beautiful: Finding Beauty in the Holocaust

In Life is Beautiful, Roberto Benigni found love, comedy and beauty in the tragedy of the Holocaust. The Oscar-winning classic is a masterpiece in screenwriting, acting, direction and cinematography/photography. In this review/video essay I break down how Benigni shows us that the most beautiful thing about life is you. So stay true to yourself. Because if you can learn to love others with the same confidence with which you love yourself, then you can find the beauty in just about anything.
Note that the philosophical ideas of Schopenhauer that I touch on in this video are only the very basics and do not completely represent the man, his works or his ideas. I encourage you to do your own research and create your own opinions.
NB: I highly recommend you watch the full movie Life is Beautiful before watching this review/video essay! You won't want the movie ending spoiled for you in this video.
I would love to discuss in the comments! Or feel free to reach me on my social media:

My favorite part of the whole movie is when he's translating the German "rules for the game," for his son, and doing his best to make everything he say match the officers body language. It wasn't til I got older that I realized noone in the bunk blew his cover either, he could have easily been stopped and shot, but they let him do it for the boy. ❤️

From the music to everything you just said, La vitta è bella is one of the most beautiful movies out there and my personal favourite. I can never forget at the end, the irony, the drama where the child finds the “trunk reward”, such a witty part of the movie but also so so sad. I cry every time. Have not watched this in a while, thank you for posting this.

This is a movie that both my parents love and I was blown away when I first watched it. I don't know how important it is to mention but I am German, and I have never seen a movie on concentration camps or the holocaust like this. It's beautiful, funny and sad at the same time. Thank you for this video.
@sunnylilacs

We watched it tonight, and one thing I realized on this watch-through was how good/subtle a job it did of showing the effect of the Holocaust on the perpetrators as well as the victims. You see and hear of the female guards’ desensitization, the doctor’s descent into madness and guilt/horror, and the early indoctrination of the children. If you’ve never read the story of Corrie ten Boom, “The Hiding Place,” I highly recommend it. One of the things I love best about it (and there are very many) is her sister’s vision, conceived even while in the concentration camp as a victim, of the place of healing she would create for the German people, because she recognized that they would need to heal, too. It’s a vision that was realized. Their story is very beautiful, as well; in fact, I would say it’s even more transcendent than this one, even as great as this one is, perhaps because it’s a true story.
@cherusiderea1330
@cherusiderea1330 3 года назад
I will never forget our excursion to the concentration camp right at the Polish-German border. You must understand, the nature surrounding the camp is beautiful. It's green and luscious and tranquille and you would never think that something horrible happened there. We went into the cabin where the prisoners used to eat and where nowadays lies a pile of the shoes the prisoners wore. It's all that's left of them. All their ashes were just scattered in the surrounding area. And I looked at the pile and was standing right in front of a tiny kid's shoe. We need to keep the memory alive so we will always know what those people did to those they did not deem "worthy"

I think this is my favorite movie. I went into watching it 100% not knowing what it was about. I thought it was just one of those older happy fun movies about a family just loving life... and then slowly it changed and almost shows just how gradually the change happened in small stages until it was too late. I love the aspect of him trying his best to keep his child's innocence even though it was the worst of times. A child should never ever have to deal with adult issues let alone the holocaust. It really changed my parenting style. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen.

You've missed one thing. When 2 men came to Guido's bookshop, he told his son to stay there. Then he sees that the boy is watching him and he starts to march and act goofy as he walks by his son. The same happens in the last scene when Guido walks by his son, even the melody is the same in these two scenes.

when i first saw this film, my parents were going through a divorce. my dad took me to see this film with his new gf. he used this romantic movie as a strategic choice to get close to this young impressionable college student. note that he was 40 and he was accomplished in his career. He never had a taste for romantic films. His new marriage didn't last. the 2nd time i saw this film was the day after, i decided to bring my mother to see the film. she cried after seeing this, and on our way home i could see that she wished for a man to treat her well like guido did in the film. eventually, she did find her prince now as an adult, I decided to rewatch it for the 3rd time. i find myself feeling melancholic experiencing what my mom did and looking at what happened back then.
