What's the first word that comes to mind when we picture Gautama Buddha? Chances are high that 'saint' is one of them. Buddha Purnima is a yearly celebration of everything the great saint stood for, and as Mahatria says, the only way to show your love to a messenger, is to live by his/her message. The case of Buddha is truly unique, even among saints. He had attained the coveted enlightenment that we all seek, at the mere age of twenty-one! Yet, he chose to travel beyond the fulfillment of his own self-realization, and spent his life traveling from village to village, just for the salvation of humanity. The magnitude of his selflessness and compassion is unparalleled, as he dedicated himself to the salvation of humanity until the age of eighty-nine. Mahatria illustrates examples of his wisdom and what we can imbibe from it. He touches upon the topics of anger and hatred, and how Buddha explained that anger is like holding hot charcoal in your hand, burning you first and foremost, and how anger is its own punishment. One of his most significant teachings is that hatred does not cease with hatred, it ceases with love. That is a lesson for the ages. On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, let us strive to inculcate that spirit of selflessness within us!
