This was awesome to watch! Most of the figure painters i tend to hang out with say that using oils to this extend is an outdated technique "nobody uses anymore" but you put it to great effect and proved that it still has its place in the figure painter repetoire. Needless to say that i love the subject matter you have picked here. Rommel was born basically in my area and spent a lot of time here. Although recent attempts of historians to stain the mans reputation have occured he still stands as a decent officer in the general memory of my people.
@SmallSoldier

Hamilkar Barkas Thanks Michael! People that say that just don’t know how to use oils. They’re very versatile and give many rich deep tones and layers and until a person gives them a real go, they’ll never know. Yes I agree Rommel was one of I’m sure several German generals that were decent human beings. I think so from what I’ve read bout him anyway.

I thought it worked well and the chapters were broken down into useful subsections that made sense with the bust. The ads also lined up well with those chapters for me so I didn't feel like they were interrupting really or cutting you off mid-thought. Very smooth. Not sure if you have control over their placement, but if so, well done there too. Maybe that's not the part of the video anyone is watching for! 😂😜 But it felt as noninvasive as possible. Don't sweat the eye painting footage! I mean of all the footage to forget to film or misplace, you just put out an in-depth guide on that very topic!!
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier 4 года назад
Thanks for the input, Chris. That's great I'm glad you liked the way I broke it down. I think it has a more professional feeling to it. As far as the ad's go (and only us RU-vidrs would probably care), they were placed by the AI I suppose. RU-vids policy is to make ad placement as unobtrusive as possible so I guess they did a good job with placement. Yeah I think the eye painting video will always make up for this if I forget next time. 😄😉

Hey there, Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial it answered some of the questions I've had about working with oils. Also your mix for black is fantastic just using it now on a Michael Wittman bust and will also look to try the field grey mix for his crusher cap. Next will be your flesh mix on another figure. As I haven't been able to source a Terra Rosa I'm going with Indian Red and tweaking the mix to suit. Cheers from New Zealand 👍

Amazing to watch Scott. Very cool to see you push yourself with this one and never settle for something you weren't enjoying 100%. I know you stripped the pre-shading and resprayed, right? And then redoing the scarf as well. Truly a pleasure to watch, and no doubt this has increased my figure painting skills, if nothing else, than on a subconscious absorbed knowledge level. I've got some 1/16 and 1/9 scale figures I'd like to get too sooner than later and will surely come back to all your guides again and again. Great trick for a DIY black. I will usually add some hue to any whites as well to push them into the cool or warm range. Would love to see you do something with a bottom lit camp fire glow!! Take care- looking forward to your next work!!
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier 4 года назад
Thank,s Chris! Yes he was stripped once and the scarf just didn’t do it for me. From reference photos it looks like his scarf was of a much lighted tone anyway. I figure, why put your heart and soul into a project and leave a sub par element which takes away from the quality. I just can’t do it. I’m glad you find my videos worth while learning from... that’s why I do them of course.😁

I’m new to the hobby of figure painting and would love to see more of this type of detailed and in-depth stuff. It would be good to see your off-camera work - mixing and thinning ratios etc - what you put on your brush before you put brush to figure. Would you consider making this vid available in normal speed so beginners like me can follow a bit better.Can’t wait for your next figure presentation. Hey Scott. Old figure painter here and love watching your videos. Even with experience, I’ve learned a lot of newer techniques with oils. I’m from a day where we learned from books or even the internet but before the wealth of informative videos out there today. My question for you is. When you add the layer of thinner over the whole face, this doesn’t affect the already painted and dry shadows and highlights? Thanks
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier Год назад
Thanks. The thinner I use is not hot at all therefore it doesn’t affect the previous layers. I use a low odour thinner. Occasionally I’ll give the figure a clear coat to seal in the previous work.
@Yoshi-mu1cc
@Yoshi-mu1cc 4 года назад
Hi, really helpful video! Did I hear you mention sealing between stages? If so, what did you use? I just tried some Ammo ‘Lucky’ (not for me) Matt varnish, the next day it was like skin peeling off after sunburn as soon as I picked it up! Cheers, Andy

@AceMcTomb

Great Channel, thank you for you good content. One question: When you say to add some form of thinner to the paints -> How to achieve that, since you are not showing it? If I dip my brush into the thinner it sucks up a lot of thinner and the paint gets too thin. Do I wipe the excess on a towel and then into the paint? Any advice would be helpful :)
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier Год назад
Yes, only add enough to make it flow better. You can wick off a bit on a towel to control the amount added as well.
@Yoshi-mu1cc
@Yoshi-mu1cc 4 года назад
Hi again, thanks for the response. Would you still use the Tamiya spray can for a 1/35 face, or would you airbrush something else for a bit more control over the spray pattern? Andy

@cutley2b
@cutley2b 2 года назад
Hi, I have watched and enjoyed this video numerous times as I am graduating from all acrylics to oils. I also have this Rommel figure. I have a question…many people do a solid base coat first and then add shadows/highlights. You did not; you went right to shadows off the prime coat. Any reason for this? Thanks.
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier 2 года назад
Thanks. The reason is I’ve established the shadows and highlights with the pre shade so I know where to put them. I also work in thin transparent layers and this way the underpainting still shows below. There’s also less chance of paint buildup from too thick of paint.
@BuzzkillZone
@BuzzkillZone 9 дней назад
so how many clear coats are you applying, if you're doing a clear coat between each oil layer.
@SmallSoldier

Amazing ability and job. So I'm clear, this is oil paint? Any particular type/brand? (Sorry video skips in the beginning) How long for it to dry? Do you seal it somehow? What primer do you use? And this bust is plastic based? Sorry for the questions, I would just like to give this a try myself. Thank you
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier 3 года назад
Don't be sorry... I love engagement from my viewers! So first off, yes I used oil paints. I prefer Winsor Newton brand of oil paints but there are others that are good such as Old Holland, Rembrandt, Schmenke. Dry time depends on your environment (is it humid or dry), and the number of thinners or mediums you use. It can take a few moments to dry or several hours. I like to seal the paint in between sessions with matt varnish so that the paint below doesn't shift or get removed. For primers, I like Tamiya rattle can primers fine white or grey, Badger Stynylrez or Mr. Surfacer 1000 or 1200. This bust is made of resin. I hope that answers your questions. Good luck and have fun when you try one out. Cheers!

Amazing and incredibly useful series of videos, thank you. I am looking to get into miniature oil painting and have some n00b questions :) 1. Do you have any experience with Abteilung 502 oil paints and how they compare to the brands you mentioned? 2. Safety - I am finding some conflicting information regarding paints that contain Cadmium, Cobalt, or Lead - in your opinion are they safe to use, especially with kids and pets around? Do you recommend any alternatives (Winsor Newton Artist Cadmium Free Oils?) Appreciate your hard work.
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier 3 года назад
Thanks so much. I'm so glad you find these videos useful. I've put a lot of hard work and effort into them and I guess people seem to like them so that's great! Abteilung is very good, I own several tubes and use them regularly. I do however prefer Winsor & Newton oils and they are my go-to when painting figures. Old Holland, Rembrandt, Golden to name a few are also very good as well. I would steer clear of the leaded paint for sure but I've had no issues using Cadmium and Cobalt colours... so far anyway. Who knows that small bump on my head may be a third eye evolving. LOL! Hope that answered your questions, if not feel free to ask me anything anytime. I generally respond within a few days. Cheers!

@SmallSoldier

I use odourless thinner as it's less hot than regular enamel thinners. I use Gamlin or Eco House brand clearcoat, depends on what I'm doing. When I'm feeling lazy I'll use Tamiya rattle can matt varnish TS-80. But I prefer to airbrush it on with Golden acrylic matt polymer varnish w/UVLS. #5007720-4. It's an excellent durable acrylic varnish that dries totally matt and you can cut it with MLT. Cheers!

could you elaborate on the crock pot for drying the oils please? i would like to do the same. i was going to make a heat box using a halogen bulb but was told resin is to sensitive to heat. is that true?
@SmallSoldier
@SmallSoldier 3 года назад
Yes the crock pot works great as does a light box. The key is to only leave the figure dry for about 10-20 minutes on the lowest setting as it can warp or soften the resin. I really bought the CP for when I sculpt figures as it dries the putty in a matter of minutes as opposed to a couple hours. The CP will speed the drying but like I said you need to watch it and depending on the resin composition (soft or hard) it'll react differently to the heat. really be careful with soft resins, harder types seem to withstand longer periods in the CP. Hope that helps and good luck if you go the CP route. Cheers!
