Welcome back, fam. New rotation alert!!! I just completed a two-week elective rotation called Fundamental Procedures. This elective is an opportunity for medical students to get hands-on experience doing some core procedures including drawing blood, putting in IVs, doing ABG (arterial blood gas), etc. These are tasks that are usually done these days by nursing or phlebotomy teams, however, these are skills that physicians should absolutely know how to do if needed. So in this VLOG, I take you guys along into the outpatient lab and inpatient floors where I do blood collections with the phlebotomy team as well as in the emergency room where I help do EKGs, draw blood, and put in IVs. Check out my work 😊

Love this video! And she meant “leaving the catheter in” when talking about IVs. The needle comes out. I’m happy to learn that my RN skills will come in handy in medical school. Julia, you make me so excited about medical school. Don’t know what I would do without the motivation your channel provides 💕

Yesss, the catheter, Renee! Thank you so much for that clarification. And your nursing skills will ABSOLUTELY come in hand in medical school. I'd argue that the folks in medicine who come from nursing backgrounds are miles ahead in clinical skill 💛

I have an autoimmune disease so I get a routine blood draw every 6wks. I've seen it done so many times I feel like I can do it myself. 😂😂 Thanks for sharing your journey with us! ☺

One question: when hooking up the tube, should that be done before or after you've put in your needle?
@thejuliacarter
@thejuliacarter 2 года назад
You don’t actually press the tube in to start drawing the blood until after the needle is in the vein. But as far as hooking it up in the vacutainer and preparing it, I’ve seen it done both ways! Hooking it up before is quicker, and experienced folks will do it all so quickly using one hand for the needle and one hand for the tube. Some people go step by step and use both hands for the needle and then once the needle is in, will use both hands for the tube. It’s personal preference!
