@QQminusS Understood. But I do think Thomas gets a bad rap. 'Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."' (John 11:16)
There is no true meaning because everything this guy has just said is just an opinion and there’s a lot more opinions out there and they all make sense so there isn’t really a true meaning tbh
@@axr4832 the meaning is whatever the author says it is. That’s the objective meaning. You can have your subjective meanings if you want, but the author gets the last word.

Also the realization that we are animals too. The father said that richard parker was an animal and not like us humans. So the movie displayed we turn into these animals when needed to survive.
It broke my heart when he sobbed like a toddler after killing the tuna. Know to most it maybe seems a trivial point to be affected by amongst everything else but just the tuna losing its colour after death and those heartfelt, heavy tears was heartbreaking for me.
Hearing the ship groan from the pressure of the sea, hearing Pi yell his families names as he watches them sink with the ship, victims of the unforgiving fury of the storm, is enough to make anyone shed a tear.
The marketing campaign did such a disservice to this film. I had never heard of Life of Pi, and when i first saw the trailers i thought it was such a different movie than it actually is. They portrayed it as one of these Disney-esque adventures between a boy and a wild animal. Light-hearted. Feel good. Something for children. It made me completely uninterested in seeing it. Then i caught a snippet of it playing on HBO one night, and i got hooked in. It was a happy accident, because its now one of my favorite films, but i cant help but wonder at how many ppl brought their kids to this film with the same initial expectations that i had.
Check out the book! I totally picked it up just by the book cover and knew nothing about it. When I read it, it was so good and visual writing. Then I found out shortly after I read it that they were going to make a movie of it by Ang Lee which I was a fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That’s where I’ll agree with you about how the marketing campaign really was not great. I thought the movie was great and the actors!
I watched this movie when it was released, so when I was 8 years old. I loved this movie so much and even though I intellectually might not have understood it completely, I felt the meaning it had. In those 10 years it never left my mind. I just watched it again and I'm not dissappointed, I'm still so amazed. So it depends on the child, but it's not necessarily a bad thing that children watched it.
I’m shocked. I cannot describe how amazing this video is. I never understood like the complete meaning of the movie. I tried so hard, and i was always looking for something like this to help me with this spectacular movie. I finally found it.
Even as an atheist this is one of my favourite films. So beautiful. The acting at the end from adult Pi always gets me. Also, I've watched this film like easily more than 4 times and I've never clicked the 'You must be thirsty' thing, and the tiger originally being named Thirsty. Amazing catch.

When Pi asks the writer what story he liked, the writer says the one with the tiger in it. That scene explains humans as an emotional beings, even when faced with a cruel reality we still try to have faith in legendary, Mythical stories. It is an unshakeable part of humanity. Pi is a day dreaming kind of man who tells incredible stories which are probably false. As forshadowed by his fondness towards many religions and it's incredible, mythical and legendary stories. Religion is something that gives hope to people while facing an unfair reality.
@@MoralofthisStoryI love that viewpoint. This is a GREAT video that makes this movie so much more amazing. It hits me differently now than it did before, especially given my journey with faith, religion and spirituality lately. Purely wonderful film and excellent video!
I watched this film today because I was free...just for enjoyment. The film finished, I was on the floor crying. Collapsed as if the universe crushed on me. the sudden realization of the animals, the island and the whole story was Pi's life just stabbed me. the fact the tiger didn't look back just summarized my entire existence. This film is going to turn my life upside down. I can see it!!
What I love about this film is that the ending open up for interpretation. I prefer the story about the tiger. It's such a beautiful message. And the scenery is the most beautiful of any movie.
Many themes, symbols, and takeaways-- but the prime one seems to be "Science=Harsh real story with cook/sailor/mom, Religion=Symbolic story with animals." Both get the point across, but by the end you'll prefer the symbolic one (You'll believe in God).
You are absolutely brilliant. Your eye opening explanations throughout this video blew me away. This has been my favorite movie and now thanks to you, I love it even more because of how deep and layered it is. Thank you for this!
I feel your meaning is well told and interpretively correct. The first time I saw this movie, I knew there was a strong religious element, but thought the animals were depicted to allow him to cope with the loss and horror that he witnessed of the people that they represented.
Honesty this video has made the Story of Life of PI 100 times better now! I have watched this at least 8 times already. Amazing video and amazing insight into the story!
I just watched the movie. I knew it was a deeply profound story, but I hadn’t even picked up on these motifs and messages. Thank you for enlightening us!
Very fascinating, this is one of my favorite movies, I fell in love with it the first time I watched it. I have had many theories about the meaning of the movie. But you're explanation of it was far better and more entertaining than I ever could have imagined. Wonderfully done.
This film changed me... I was 19, single, self destructive and I had drank 3 litres of strong cider and a friend rang me to see what I was doing, I had nothing on other than drinking alone so I went to hers. We watched this film on USB with her ex boyfriend really flying up there (🍁) , she didn't understand the film and didn't get it but until this day, 8 years later, it's still affected me. This is film hit a gay metal head who was raised catholic so much in the areas of faith, survival and individualism that I was never the same since. This film will always be in my heart no matter where 'god' may take me ♥️ Peace to all xx
My wife and I just watched the life of Pi in our VR headsets in 3d on an enormous virtual screen and it was an incredible experience. The film is visually breath-taking and it it is easy to get lost in the spectacle and lose sight of the deeper meaning. Your videos are an excellent addendum to this wonderful film and help shed light on it's deeper spiritual themes. I won't show these to my wife though, as she CHOOSES to believe the Richard Parker version of Pi's tale, just as the investigators did. The film is very much about the stories we choose to believe so I find it quite apt. One thing I would like to add. the name "Richard Parker" has a more sinister origin. from the wiki: "The name Richard Parker for the tiger was inspired by a character in Edgar Allan Poe's nautical adventure novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838). Richard Parker is a mutineer who is stranded and eventually cannibalized on the hull of an overturned ship, and there is a dog aboard who is named Tiger. Martel also had another occurrence in mind in the famous legal case R v Dudley and Stephens (1884), where a shipwreck again results in the cannibalism of a cabin boy named Richard Parker, this time in a lifeboat.[16] A third Richard Parker drowned in the sinking of the Francis Spaight in 1846, described by author Jack London, and later the cabin boy was cannibalized. "So many victimized Richard Parkers had to mean something", Martel suggested." Thanks for your great videos.
This movie is in my top 5 of all time,Such a beautiful movie with such a beautiful meaning I will never forget this movie and it’s beautiful story.I Shed a tear multiple times especially when Richard Parker went away.
I think the most beautiful aspect of this story is how it can have a different meaning for each viewer. This story was the last movie I watched with my mom before she passed away, and later during a volatile time in my life I read the book, it gave me hope and failth.
A movie that has made me ball my eyes out multiple times!! Regardless of the meaning, my connection with animals goes deep and it hurts so hard to see the death of animals.
The best explanation of this movie till now. I never understood the other videos where they explain the meaning of Life of Pi but in this video I understood everything.
Omg...i watched this movie so many times and not once did it get to me that Pi is "Thirsty" as a character/Tiger and not just thirsty as a condition. Now I have to watch it again. Thanks so much.🙏🏻
One of the very few films which I need courage to watch because it's so much emotional exhausting. It drains me emotionally for many days. Kept aside it's one of my favourite films. One which I was lucky to witness in theatres. The moral of the story is that Richard Parker is Pi and Pi is Richard Parker. They are soul mates which is shown in the reflection in water. And the journey they had is when he truly grew up. But Richard Parker waiting and staring towards the jungle without looking back means that in life we should not much dwelve on the bygone which he always repented of not thanking his father and truly loving him.
The strange floating island is not symbolic to pi . It symbolises to lord vishnu . You can see the similarity of the lord vishnu idol from the scene where pi thanks lord Vishnu for introducing jesus to him .
So *unique* & *beautiful* & *miraculous* at the time in modern Cinema. This movie *Life of Pi* is an extraordinary and a miraculous achievement masterpiece of storytelling that became an adventure-drama film that has his own genre to make a film that is totally inspiring for millions of people around the globe and all around the world that are *christians* and part of religion in Cinema.
This movie *Life of Pi* directed by *Ang Lee* means everything to me when I’m very religious and as a *Christian* during my middle school time and high school time with showing the film itself with the use of 8 meaning words in its own perspective in Cinema. *Religion, Realism, Resilience, Resourcefulness, Reciprocity, Reflection, Rebounding, and Forgiveness.*
I first saw this movie when I was an elementary school student. I had a shallow understanding of the movie. And now, I understand better. It's amazing how bits of information can be complex with imagination.
Really , After many years i didn't understand this movie with that deep meaning , what a masterpiece ❣️ Thankyou sir , for this very kind heart touching video for the respect of this movie 🍿. Love from india 🇮🇳
i havent seen the movie since i was 14 because i thought i understood it, back then i thought that the human version of the story was just something Pi made up so the doctors had something beliveable to write in their report. But now seen this video, and recalling the line "bananas don't float" at the hospital scene, I realize that the animals are a way for Pi to deal with the traumatic reality of what really whapened at the boat with his other humans survivors. 😖😖😲😲
Wow! This is so enlightening, I always thought there was a deep meaning in the tiger but I didn’t think it will get that deep with the rest of the movie details. And you put it beautifully.
". . . in order to experience this transformation, you must be Thirsty." Does that mean that Pi was REALLY the tiger, and that the story of his life was really just the tiger's fantasy? So the REAL puzzle of the story would be: will the other tigers BELIEVE him, or will they insist it was all just a delusion!
It’s interesting how you interpreted his uncle. Holding a newborn upside and swinging is really a life saving measure in cases for a baby draws first breath while still in amniotic fluid. So although the body shape is a story, the action was totally logical, which adds another level to what you say about Pi’s story telling. As well as adding to the theme of the mouth, water and drowning.
Such an amazing and deep analysis! The story already had a lot of spiritual lessons, but your video elaborated on them. Thank you for the lovely presentation. Hare Krishna!
I don't know why but I could relate myself to Pi's charector soo much 🥺. This film is and will be the best film of my life. Sir, your video had rightly showed that this film has deep meaning of life.
So life is a tragedy, we humans are too weak to get by in life if we realize this, therefore we need to invent stories that prevent us from confronting inconvenient truths?
I see it this way: Life is a gift, and we are much stronger and more resilient than we realize. Therefore, some gifts are graciously wrapped in beautiful paper (hope and myth) and we get to choose when we are ready to open them and fully experience a new level of truth.
something I took away from this analysis, is that even in the darkest of places, beauty can shine. And in order to find peace in your soul, you must first go through darkness.
I think life is an investigation where we try to find ourselves rather than tragedy or invention of stories. No one knows fully why we are here. But its always better for us to keep going in terms of survival and in which what we believe in.
@@MoralofthisStory Beautiful analysis, but.... You missed the most potent line in the entire movie; “Can I ask you something? I told you two stories which story do you prefer?” So many of us convince our children to believe in Santa Claus, why? Is it possible that you are suppressing something? I say this with much respect.
In life you will always know where your weaknesses lie, your failures, your short comings. The world makes sure of this. Performance reviews, relationships- both platonic and romantic, and the like make sure we are aware of these things. Rarely, are our strengths, our wins, given to us with the same vigor and consistency. Of your personal strengths, please consider the ability to teach. Well done, Burton
I thought this whole movie is a metaphor. Richard Parker, obviously is cold, ruthless, and everything wicked about Pi himself, in order to survive his harsh life. Pi himself is the good side of him. But, in the end, he realized Richard Parker was not the approach (sort of) to his life and how he should spend it, but the memories associated with his dark self make him unable to just let go of his old self, feeling nostalgic. Maybe, I had this conception that this movie was about aging. You would rather prefer your imaginative, wild childhood than the tough but adult with principles.
Pi is "god's" little wink to us regarding evolution and existence... Uncalculable and never ending. The math of it aside. Recognition of this is beautiful for some. Foreboding for others. Just know that we are meant to be and in some form or fashion "we" will continue.
This story is very similar with my life, like I have been going through the same things which pi been to. Currently my darkness seems to have taken over me and taking me to bad side. But this video helped me so much understanding why it is happening and I guess this is the sign to continue my journey 🙂
Periodically, I play this film for my ELS students, the special classes that I think are ready for trying to understand the concept of the Hero's Journey. I prompt them with many questions, but provide them with few answers until they have seen the entire story and have had time to reflect on my guided prompts. I have been studying this film for a few years, now, making my own discoveries and reading the impressions of other viewers. Many of my inferences are represented in this video (e.g. the "Thirsty" references), while the presenter suggested a few perspectives I hadn't considered yet (especially the significance of Tsimtsum). One of my students, a very special 16-year-old girl from Italy, made a connection between the lotus in the forest from Anandi's dance and the blossom that hide the tooth on the island. Much of what was not addressed in this video was what I saw in the symbolism of Anandi, the symbolism of the dance, and the string she ties around his wrist (which is seem again on the island). The Island represents to me the final point at which Pi could have given up his spiritual journey. He could have remained there in comfort--his last temptation--but he had to take the final step to achieve enlightenment/nirvana. I have to disagree with the claim that Pi is the opposite of his father. I believe that his father and mother represent two sides of Pi. Those two sides become separated when Pi creates the tiger and recombined on the Mexican beach.
@Ian Cribbes Pi has both a rational, pragmatic side (father), and a spiritual, irrational side (mother). They are both instrumental in his survival and his perseverance in seeking enlightenment. At the end of his story, he thanks his father for giving him the tools he needed in his life struggle. His father is more evident in the tiger. He will resort to eating meat if survival dictates. The tiger ignores the grand spectacle of nature that Pi sees during the storm just before the island and simply wants to hide from the power of nature, much as his father warns of the dangers of being fooled by spectacle and pretty lights when religion is only darkness. His mother taught him that the entire universe exists in Krishna's mouth, and Pi keeps seeing this vision when he looks into the vast ocean around him (such as the whale scene), which also echos the floating lights at the Hindu ceremony. Pi has trouble reconciling these two sides, and creates the tiger as an attempt to separate himself from what he sees as his dark side. He is finally able to come to terms with (train but not tame) his internal tiger once he has achieved enlightenment.
It’s very Jungian (integrating our shadow) as well as very Taoist (yin & yang) both the lightness and darkness of the world, of all things, contains within it the opposite. Wow, I cannot wait to see this film now! Thank you for sharing your intriguing insights! 🙏🏼 Namaste

Thankyou for shedding some light on this beautiful film, I’ve watched it so many times, and never could have realised the true meaning. 😘. I have subscribed to your channel.
I just watched the movie for the first time. Your video is amazing, it put the things I feel during the movie into words. One thing I stuck is though, the colors fading at the final scene showing the jungle where Richard Parker left. It definitely means something but I cannot put into words. Any ideas?
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED was the first story. Pi was a religious man and since he was a kid he noticed many other people don't share his belief. So when told the story to the guy he told the true story but also gave him the option to not believe the unbelievable adventure that happened to him and an option to think the second story was true because it makes more sense and doesn't require belief. Both the book and the movie makes the second story seem like the actual events because logical earthly stories are easier to believe but the first story is really what happened and it requires that little bit of belief that he was telling the truth to the reporter and Japanese insurance people the first time around. Also he had no motive to make up a hard to believe story when he was first tellng the story. If the second story happened he would have told it first by saving some facts and would have later told everything when questioned more. And if you think about it the events in the book is a looong story to just come up with. He would have literally needed to write a full book about fake events. And when he told the second story it was just a simplified quick altered version. And had he first told the investigators a books full of events and when asked to come up with a believable story how could he have come up with another books worh of events that are so close to the first books worth of events.
Now that i rewatched it it's 100% clear that the latter story was the true one because writers like stories that make the viewers gasp in unbelief that a nice person could be capable of so much violence when there are extreme situations in life. So the latter story is true what he told right after the reporters asked for the truth. When he told the original story he told it like it was an adventure and when he told the truth his face was serious because now he had to face what he really did. He had a lot of days at the seas to make up a bs story and when he was asked for the truth he finally told the truth. And the reporters were basically like 'hey dude bananas don't float and there's no magic islands so we need the truth now' And the book writer figured it out and connected every animal to the people and after that Pi said no one can prove either story to be true so which story do you prefer? And the writer said the one with the tiger is the "better story" (aka makes a better book) And Pi replied and ended the conversation with: "thank you, and so it goes with God" meaning thank you for not publishing a book that's about me killing people because after i was rescued i left that part of me and have made peace with God and that that is how he like to recall the events.
@@gauravw6947 I had to explore both possibilities but i'm definately with the first one as well. The last scene in the movie literally shows us the tiger and no one was telling a story there, so i say it can be 100% confirmed. If the second story was true then it would have shown Pi leaving his murderous life in the past, not a tiger walking into the jungle. Not even the writers or the director can say it was meant to symbolize anything.
the island was in the shape of the idol of lord vishnu which young pi used to pray to, the island represented gods blessing where he could stay a little but ultimately leave towards a journey of struggle which was the sea.
@@katnunez9104 yeah, basically, he gets sick after he eats his mother as by the time he has to eat her, she's already rotting, hence the island that gives during the day, takes away at night, and the single tooth is what he threw back up
Wow I finally found a movie review page with a soothing voice. Call me picky but I absolutely hate the high pitch, over enthusiastic borderline screaming reviews.
For years, I have been doubting if God truly exists. I asked myself how a loving God let the world become the hell that it is today? I came to the conclusion that there was no way God existed. At least not as the way that he is portrayed in the Bible. I have been through a lot of hardships in my life that also played a huge part in my doubting. Just about 2-3 months ago, I reached the decision to either believe there was no God or to believe in him. Just like the writer had to choose between which story to believe. He believed in the better story. Finally, I had chosen to believe in God because it makes my life better with him in it.
What do you think, God is good or bad? I belive there is no god what Bible describe. Will animals go to heaven with me ? Why God made children with disabilities, have they done any sins ? Why should they suffer? Will a non believer get to heaven wo doesn't know any thing about Jesus but still is righteous, truthful and loving. Did people go to heaven before birth of Jesus? I belive god is a energy. Prior to bigbang there there was nothing but energy, wich created matter and then we were created , like science says. This energy is equilibrium of sattva, rajsya and tamas
I think the island symbolizes a sleeping man to represent that he had to leave it to survive. otherwise, he is just a person entrapped in the cycle of not knowing/finding the ultimate truth ie like an inhabitant of that island. but I could be wrong as I have not read the original novel,
at one point in the film he says that when krishna is sleeping our reality is what he is dreaming. the island is khrisna and you can hear him breathing in his sleep.
