That’s the magic trick that these folding bikes pull on you. I bought my first Brompton in 2009, after months and months of wondering how I could possibly justify the cost (since I was a physically idle, office worker), but the seduction began as soon as I realised that it was so much more fun than walking or running, taking public transport or driving.
@CycleEveryday

Totally agree 😀👍 definitely worth it and afterwards you wonder why you didn’t get one a lot sooner 😀

Kinda like having a car in a way. Living in the US Midwest, public transportation takes planning and waiting (on both ends) and has limited service hours so everyone has a personal vehicle... but I hate starting my car just to go a dozen blocks but walking that and back to get something takes over an hour esp when having to carry bags. I'm not sedentary but I'm not athletic either 😆. Brompton comes right in my apt and goes in the car with me when I go on vacation. It's awesome to increase the ground you can cover while exploring the north/ old parts of Chicago in stead of driving by then having to find parking! I did it on a Collapsible scooter last time, I'm excited for warmer weather and the Brompton this summer.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 2 года назад
Definitely more fun in the summer! 😀 I find driving quite stressful since riding on the bike just because of the traffic and parking, and the cost as well. Definitely prefer riding on the commute even when the weather isn’t too bad. Brompton is brilliant though like you said for the last leg of the journey! 😀👍

Yes. I had mine for 6 months pre-lockdown, which was long enough to start preferring it over my Scott E-tour electric. Now I have to remember to take the electric occasionally, instead of the Brompton.. While the electric is faster, and goes further with less sweating... ... it isn't such a nice bike to ride!

As a total Brompto-holic I agree with everything you say in this video (of course!)! I never realised how seamlessly and completely a Brompton would fit into my life, and when I get any snorts of derision from Lycra-clad roadies, I just feel sad for them that they don’t know what they are missing... but always ‘horses for courses’ and the road bike is a wholly different experience. There is a chap in the Netherlands who custom makes a Brompton on steroids for off road trips... I am very tempted(😉) but meanwhile enjoying my leather hub cleaners and leather bag release as recommended - crackingly simple but much appreciated! Bravo for another beautifully produced video 🌟👍‼️ Stay safe out there 🤗

I’m seriously thinking of getting one of these as my “everyday bike” rather than a standard sized hybrid. I’ve got road, touring and MTB bikes and I’m looking for a hybrid (mainly as my tourer is getting heavier as I keep on adding racks and extra stuff) and I think the Brompton will be great. My commute is 12 ish miles and I think a Brompton would cope fine with it and then it’s got the practicality of being able to take it everywhere. I think it could be the bike for me

😎🚴I'm happy that you like your brommie, I like your channel. 6 months isn't a long time, but you hit the core points. Gets you there, enjoying the ride, no worries about people messing around with it. IMHO, once you go brommie, you never go back. People discuss bikes in all ways possible, but you voiced the three parts that matter most. I could add a fourth: Safety first. Sometimes the safest way to cycle is slowly. For example, sharing a narrow bridge crossing with pedestrians. Or, as I did just this week (I'm American), leaving a 4th of July event with all kinds of pedestrians crowding to reach their cars to join the traffic jam. Got me there and back, safely, having fun. Bonus tidbit: It was a bring-your-own seating event. Folded, a brommie makes a good chair on uneven terrain. (More stable when you turn the seat backwards.)

Brompton bikes are worth the extra money just for the veracity. Living in a small Aprtment in the heart of the city of Sydney it’s great, it easy to store and you never need to leave it anywhere unattended. Have having one bike stolen and another damaged at a bike rack I decided to spend the money on a Brompton and never looked back.

I ride a road bike on the weekends but im a truck driver in the US and gone weekdays on the road so i got a brompton and keep it in my truck and its been so great to be able to ride around after work and with the bag i can carry quite a bit from the store. Versatility is the word - Bromptons are second to none in that respect (though I don’t like the ride quality). I have the B Electric and often use it without battery, but it takes versatility to another level IMO when hauling heavy loads in a head wind or on multi day hilly camping tour. 😃
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
E-bikes are definitely a game changer for those sort of things. Especially on head winds like you said. Think that is one point of difference on other folding e-bikes to the Brompton. Our other e-bike is really heavy, so almost impossible to ride without the battery (25kg) but like you said, the Brompton can be ridden either way. 😀👍

I got mine at the time you uploaded this video. 3 months in and this bike has been impressive, not just in my weekly adventures but had been my bike I had been working food delivery with. It's less of a hassle to travel from home to work compared to my older folding bike. (A Tern Link C8) I hadn't done many upgrades because of my limited budget but I had carried over some accessories from my older folding bike such as the Tern RidePocket Pouch and new accessories added such as the Brompton QuadLock Mount
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
Great to hear Owen! The QuadLock mount is interesting. don't think I will get one immediately as have one I am happy with at the moment but if it ever breaks would definitely think about it. Know of a few people that use theirs for food delivery and they all say they are great for that so good to hear you are finding the same. Good thing about the Brompton is its great as it is anyway, without any upgrades. 👍

Cycling over cobbled streets and avoiding big curbs can be a pain. But I still love it. Also I needed a new stem replaced by Brompton free of charge as the nipple wasn't braised properly so wouldn't secure in the handlebar catch and the 6 speed gearing the shfters wont move from + to - and sometimes the gear indicator chain has fallen out.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
Yeah it can be bumpy on cobbles. Sorry to hear about the stem. At least it has been replaced though which is great to hear. Don’t have the 6 speed and think of I had another one would still keep to the three as like the simplicity of it. I haven’t had much issues with the gear chain but always make sure it’s tighter before I start off and after I get back 👍

Fellow Brummie here! Enjoyed the video, especially as I'm about to buy myself a brand new Brompton Explore as a retirement present. I ride bikes a lot more in retirement, but really want something I can take with me on trips - easy to carry on buses, trains, or chuck in the boot of the car. I've also been impressed with several videos demonstrating how convenient the Brompton is for shopping. I was interested to see you riding the Brompton on slightly soggy terrain (7:00 to 7:15). How do you find it handles the sometimes mucky canal towpaths around Brum?

How do you decide which handlebar type to get?Indeed why are there different ones?
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
The handlebar is quite important in terms of the riding style you want. The straight one gives you more of a sport type position leaning over. Personally I prefer I more upright position which is a bit more relaxed and I find easier for longer journeys. But it’s important to have a look at them all and try them out if you can to see which you feel most comfortable with. You can change afterwards, but can be a bit of a pain as the cables are measured for the different set-ups so would need to be changed as well. Hope that helps?

I have a 10 year old Brompton M6R can I upgrade the gear changers? As I might have missed one on "How to do it". Your video's are great. Ian. Ide'F
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
Hi Ian. Thanks for the comment. The older gear changers are above the handlebars whereas the newer ones are incorporated into the brake levers. Although I havent done that, I expect that it would be a case of changing out the brake levers for the new ones and then just adjusting the cables. But this might be more difficult than it sounds, as the cables may need to be shortened. So to answer the question, yes it is possible, but is worth looking into more to see how many issues it might throw up! Someone on here might have already done it so maybe they can help out a bit more with how easy it was. Alternatively take it to the closest Brompton dealer and ask them how difficult it would be to have a go at doing it yourself. Hope that helps?

Had quite a few bikes in the past that have been a real pain to replace bits on, but this one is very straightforward even with little knowledge. But if I was taking it in to have it looked at, it would be at a Brompton dealer. Sorry Bromptons are specialty bikes, best for what they were designed for, which is being folded, and shorter rides in urban areas. People do shoehorn the bike into many other roles, like long distance touring, but for the most there are a lot better choices. Would l like to have a Brompton, absolutely. It is a unique well made bike with a certain mystique. But in no way can l justify buying this expensive little jewel. Kind of like owning a little sports car, can’t justify it , just want the damn thing.
