Olivia Kuper Harris - winner of #PMJsearch2017 and now a regularly touring #PMJtour cast member - is back for a haunting jazz ballad cover of Bowie's "Life On Mars," filmed in the Speakeasy Room at PMJ Manor. Fun fact: this was the first PMJ video that made it into space.

It sounds like I was just sitting at the bar after a long day and the band starts up, the singer starts singing, and at first I listen halfheartedly, but then as the song goes on it captures my attention, and soon I get up and slowly make my way over to the stage, just dreamily listening to her voice as the rest of the world is drowned out. Then the song ends and I'm snapped out of my reverie.

It's funny because Life On Mars was David Bowie's reaction to Frank Sinatra, who is obviously a big contender to this genre.
@rain_down_
@rain_down_ 4 года назад
Might be wrong, but I thought it was a reaction to Paul Anka winning the rights to the song Comme d'Habbitude, not Sinatra personally. Bowie loved jazz.
@jessica5497

Sorry not Frank Sinatra...Paul anka
@CallumChaney
@CallumChaney 4 года назад
In 1968, Bowie wrote the lyrics "Even a Fool Learns to Love", set to the music of a 1967 French song "Comme d'habitude", but Paul Anka bought the rights to the original French version and rewrote it into "My Way", the song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The success of the Anka version prompted Bowie to write "Life on Mars?" as a parody of Sinatra's recording. So a bit of both i guess
@NoirChat138

CaliburnCelt -- Vulfpeck incorporated the opening bars of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" into their song "Daddy Got a Tesla." 50 years ago a woman paid her way through college by converting one of Muzio Clemente's sonatinas into "Groovy Kind of Love" by the Mindbenders. Other examples include "Stranger in Paradise" (from a Borodin piece) and "Tonight We Love" (from Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto). Frank Vignola has done a jazz-samba piece based on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony also. There is also an Italian arranger who has converted Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" into a classical Bach fugue, which Chris Rupp later adapted from a long instrumental piece into a short a capella piece.

This is the first cover of a Bowie song that’s good that I’ve found other than the Paul Dempsey ashes to ashes cover

Ok that was special. Measured and effortless take on one of my favourites. Simply beautiful. Also drummer doing smoldering look while stirring on the snare had me laughing. Great vocal performance. Again, understated... adds to the charm
