You'd be hard pressed to find a 75K miles Duramax pickup for 15K, and this is a 4500 medium duty chassis. @I Know You're Right But you can find surplus deals but nice gems like this are pretty rare. Most places don't retire vehicles until after they've had a long service life, normally pushing 200k miles in something like this. The power train is rock solid, you'd be hard pressed to overload it, and it tows great. Not much more you need! I look forward to seeing the solar and bedding solutions they come up with.

Used ambulances are quite common on the used market. I have no idea why they're not more popular for conversions... they have all storage built-in, space for a bed, and a crew to work around it. The prices are right tho, since whole fleets need to be replaced every couple of years, and no one want used ambulances. You might wanna choose one without the original ambulance paint and symbols tho xD

@@livingbig Keep the blue color on it and get rid of any ambulance markings such as the snake. Also, remove the big ass horn on the hood and remove some of the warning lights. Maybe you could add a roof scoop on top to make it more aerodynamic due to the back half being so square. I mean, the camp-ulance has the aerodynamics of a barn door. Lol

Extra secure too. But I would still add some cameras and an internet connection to them, internal as well as external. Some people make a career out of challenging break-ins. And there is always the driver who gets out to pay for gas leaving his door open and girlfriend in the back.

OMG PLEASE keep the blue!!! Our units here in Canada look NOTHING like the one you have. It is beautiful and it would be a shame to see it covered or painted. I would keep it the way it is but I know you want to or maybe need to remove the star of life but maybe just remove or cover up the pin and snake and do something that works with the star and worry more about removing the markings on the rear of the unit. Just my 2 cents worth about the unit. Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

I used to be an EMT, and have operated out of these Modular Style Ambulances, and the Stainless Steel Overhead Grab Bars are in place to assist you with getting into your turnout gear when enroute to an Accident Scene, they also come in handy when moving around to work on a patient during transport to the Hospital. The Bed can be made in a way that it could be folded up along the wall when not in use, and then dropped down when the 2 of you are ready to go to sleep.

Love your content. I am working on bringing tiny monolithic domes to many people. I work in automotive. Keep about $5k set aside for repairs. Your tires will now cost 300 to 500 each and you will need to go to a dealership or big rig tire shop. Brakes and engine work are much more expensive. Similar to a class A motor coach. The engine and trans are same as a 1 ton so more than regular vehicle but not in outer space like the Caterpillar engines in the coaches. Great buy!!!! I love it. I really enjoy your content. I want you to love this vehicle. I don’t want you to loose that joy due to an unexpected repair.

put a skylight in the rear cabin. Ambulances make amazing reuse vehicles for all sorts of things. Big fleet units are always well maintained and a diesel is hardly even broken in at 75K miles :) I had one that I got for $500 and we gutted and put all wood paneling in along with a Maple hardwood floor. We built a drop down bed platform so that we could have a large bed, but one that would stow away when we wanted to move around and use the kitchenette or just hang out when the weather wasn't cooperating outside. Another nice addition would be a side awning so that you can cook and relax outdoors even in fowl conditions.

Cooler size freezer. Microwave + convention or toaster oven in a cabinet area. A built folding platform to extend the couch into a full / queen size bed. You already have lots of battery for the lights, just need at 110V inverter.

NONE....... ZERO.... EEVVEERRY person transported in an "ambo" is kept alive. Mandatory action across USA. Heart is kept beating whole time no matter what. Ceasing keeping the body alive is only allowed in the Hospital by doctor's order. That's the rules... If someone is already dead they ARE NOT transported in an Ambo. Coroner has their own vehicle for that.... thus ambulances remain available for another life saving call and not tied up transporting the deceased.
@ericdmochowski8145
@ericdmochowski8145 5 лет назад
coachgeo your stupid as shit, people die in ambulances all the time, often times patients are pronounced dead. Just because they are receiving cpr doesn’t mean that they are alive. Just because ambulances don’t go around picking up the deceased doesn’t mean that people don’t die in a vehicle that is meant for transporting and caring for people with serious injuries.
@Mincraftslacker
@Mincraftslacker 5 лет назад
coachgeo Where are you getting your information? I’ve worked at my fire department for several years now and have seen many people die in transit, “ceasing to resuscitate” isn’t only allowed at a hospital, There are a tremendous amount of different scenarios that a patient can go through and unfortunately sometimes they’re complications mean they don’t make it to a hospital and you can’t just decide that they have to live until arrival. Don’t put information out there that comes out of your ass, thank you.

I own a 1991 Ford E350 MedTech Ambo. I have people give me "that look" when the conversation turns to how many souls have passed on in my rig. I say plenty I'm sure, but how many lives were also saved? How many babies first cries were heard in there? I look at the positive side of things and have never felt the slightest bit of evil while in my rig. BTW, this is my daily driver and it gets 18 mpg... Pretty good for something that weighs almost 10k pounds empty.

Brilliant buy, replace the bench seat with a mattress on pull out slats, half can be the back support, half the seat. That way you'll still be able to use the seatbelts. It will take a bit more of the central space but you'll have a proper bed to sleep on, you can even make it longer on Bryce's side by adding a side flap of timber as a side table with a cushion on top for night time.

What's amazing about Ambulance conversions, is the electric is already run and they are built like a tank to a very high spec both engine and body and are maintained appropriately. 9:11 i notice a bit of a gap between the long seat cushions and the wall. If you remove the backrest and maybe the big grey thing on top at 10:18 you could easily install a fold-down bed that could either rest on the seat cushions with a bit of additional support, or just go over the cushions without touching them. There's definitely enough horizontal floorspace for a walkway and bed.

The fact that the “Campulance” has been so well fitted with electronics means it could offer a whole new element to your design! Do you have an inventory of the embedded existing systems? With every personal space you design, you take it to the next logical level. This Camulance is a special challenge because it is unclear as to what you should remove. Ultimately you will probably have to remove elements that you don’t really want to remove. I’d start by pretending the space is empty and design an ultimate solution. Then after it is on paper, try to reincorporate the existing elements into your design by “switching things around.” I’m so intrigued with your perspectives on both design and life, and with the whole approach that you take in filming your show. Well done. Thank you, especially, for your inspiration!

I never planned on an ambulance, either. Bought a shuttle bus. Turned it into a house. A tree fell on it. Now, I've bought an ambulance, to put my systems into. I got it for very little money, because the engine was blown. Currently swapping the engine from the bus, to the ambulance. I paid less for the truck, than I would charge to build cabinets, half the quality of the ones in the ambulance. Paid $10k for the bus. Got the ambulance for $1750. Same box as yours.

You could use the metal pull-up bars to hold your mattress when it's not in use. When you need the mattress you can add a pulley system to make it descend. So cool!!!

Looks identical to the Kodiak my old volunteer dept still has in service, except ours was purple where yours is blue. And no, (to Mary Ellen's comment) not all had a sink. Ours was a full-time emergency response rig. Those hand rails came in really useful when you were going from one end of the rig to the other for supplies while in motion. FYI: The lock on the fridge was there so that only paramedic and a-level EMT's had access to medications and certain supplies that b-level EMT's were not trained or allowed to administer. (which makes no sense, because if you only had a paramedic and a b-EMT on board, and the paramedic needed the b-EMT to get a controlled med for them, then the code lock becomes useless. Our med safe used a key...)
@SuperDrummerJay
@SuperDrummerJay 5 лет назад
Oh, and since it was a recurring issue on our department's Kodiak, check to see if yours has the airbag suspension in the back. It was really useful to raise/lower the height of the rig, but ours always seemed to have reliability issues. If you don't have the air ride, don't worry about it. But if you do, its probably something you wont need in a camper, and you might want to look at converting it to a traditional setup before it flakes out on you. Also, keep in mind, mileage on fire service apparatus is pretty irrelevant. Our ambulance would idle for hours on end at a fire scene or on standby at events. Its not the odometer that counts, the important figure is engine hours.

For your bed, just add a drop down table something like regular RVs have. Just a thought. You're able to keep all existing storage under the bench along with the seatbelts.
@LazyBunnyKiera

Wow, you really don't need to do a lot of overhauling. All the storage, fridge, little table, and even a place for a bed is there for you. The ambulance is a great option, now i'm considering that.

Love this idea! Never thought about an ambulance as a camper but it has so much potential! If you want to keep as much as possible from the Original interior I would install a bed that you can pull down from the backdoor. It would mean you cannot use it as an entrance anymore, but if the bed is down, you can still open it and when the bed is up against the door, you have the side door which you allready use as mean entrance and the entrance from front. Blankets and Pillows go in the sofa storage. Your kitchen counter idea is perfect I think and I would put a sink right where that drawer is. For cooking and heating use solar as much as possible. Get an Instant Pot, you have a enough space to store it! Good luck and lots of fun making this the camper of your dreams! ^_^
@Eva-ww8kx

It looks like it has a lot of potential. Ideas: You seem comfortable with a smaller bed, why not turn the double seater into a couch with interlocked slats that you can pull out (with it's own legs always resting on the ground) to make double the width of the current bench? Keep as much of the current furniture intact as possible (except for the seats). It's been made to be extremely sturdy and withstand the travelling, so it's unlikely you will get something as strong. Start with the seats and tabletops, because they make it look clinical. The rest is minimal, and will probably look awesome with some well-made wooden worktops. You can stick any artwork on the wall to make it look nice without having to replace wall material. See how you like it then and consider doing more. The weird outdoor closet could be an onboard shower if it .. oh I just rewatched and you already said so :)

Enjoyed your vid. Was a FF/ PMD for 30 years., just a note that most ambulances have a way to put another cot (stretcher) over the bench seat. Look for two round metal bowls and on the other end it will be a two rectangles if so they would be a good place to fold a mattress down to saving your bench seat. And giving you ansafe secure bed even while moving. Good luck. Hope to meet you when you come to sunny south florida., FTL here

One I'd raise the roof. Then I'd extend over the cab and put a bed up there with a skylight so you could fall asleep while looking at the stars. I would put a full bathroom and dining area with a built-in generator. Keep it blue like it is because that looks good. Another thing that I would do is make it so you could have a collapsible accordion hallway like a jet-way that could connect your tiny home on wheels to the back doors of the ambulance so you could walk between both of them when you are parked and it would extend your tiny home while you are somewhere for a long time. All you would have to do is hit a button and the moving walkway would just move into place and then you would just connect it to the tiny home and open the door into it.

Greay score! A nice bedding option that, I think should take over the tiny house scene, is the Japanese bedroom system. Just a nice comfy tatame mat, perhaps raised a little bit. And sleep on roll-up futons. Tatame is such a nice natural material and also really nice to walk and sit on.

That’s a great find, one thing you may not know, a lot of people turn old school buses into campers, but an ambulance is safer b/c they are designed to keep the occupants safe in the event of a rollover accident, whereas a bus might not be as sturdy

Many people were saved thanks to this ambulance also... so, just like in a church, you had people alive , suffering, or dead. This place is strong. Of hope, life, emotions. All the aspects. Use the best ideas already there for the storage. Yes for the little kitchen place where it can be already. Windows everywhere with curtains easy to use. The storage you can access from the outside is as well good . Toilets 🚽 in the first compartment. The summer kitchen can come out from the compartment in the middle. Third compartment, put elements like tools, furniture for camping ⛺️. Inside, the bed can be near the roof daily with a possibility to slide it near the floor for the night. Keep the place you want, for sure, this is your idea, for the kitchenette. The sofa can stay there, home staging required... of course. The door outside opens on nature. Keep the sliding stair, and add a board on it for a table, for instance. The place behind, the front armchairs can be used, for storage. But, If you turn the armchairs you have extra furniture for the dining room. The two metal bars can be fixed on the roof for extra storage. First ideas, okay 👌🏻 now imagine the rest. 🤓😎
