In this episode, we meet two archaeologists on island and go for a historical tour of St. Eustatius. After a northerly swell sweeps into the anchorage we find ourselves somewhere unexpected. We check out Statia's solar farm and planetarium, both rare to see in the Eastern Caribbean. We then do a dive at a couple historical dive sites. After a few busy days, we check out the Pure White Party, a DJ dance party. The island of St. Eustatius, aka Statia has definitely been everything we hoped for and more.

Their kindness was not just sweet but smart marketing. Now as one of your viewers I'm web searching their room rates and having a thought of taking my wife there for a scuba trip after we get certified in the near future. How easy is it to get into Statia as a non-yachtie?
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
It actually just became a lot easier and cheaper to get to Statia. If you can catch a flight to St Martin, there's a new 3 hour ferry service that runs almost daily for just $85 round trip. If you reach out to Golden Rock Dive Center or The Old Gin House, let them know you saw us there. We still catch up with them from time to time. 👍

@@SailingOneLife I have not travelled back since then. I spent 3 years travelling and living on various islands that included Montserrat, Dominica, Barbados, Grenada and St Vincent. It was an exciting time and I met some incredible people all over. I did meet a couple who were visiting the island by boat, a couple by the names of Heidi and Casper.

@JJLewin1
@JJLewin1 2 года назад
@@SailingOneLife That's not easy to answer as each island has it's own character. I have always loved Barbados, Grenada was lovely, St Vincent was pretty in places and had some great festivals, I guess Montserrat before the volcano would be my number one choice. The people were very welcoming and I felt at home.

This island was already settled before the Dutch arrived

Yes, sure was. So much history!

Well I was watching to see if this island might be for me. I stopped watching because I was getting more and more irritated. All the gushing about the generosity of the people you met. So here is a alternative "read". You're good publicity. BTWWhere are the black people? I kept trying to find at least one, The island was a major slave plantation colony. Where are the descendants of those people? That history lesson that Ruud gave washed over some major details. I am sure thrre were actual human beings living there before it was "settled" by the Dutch. What happened to them? All that Delft pottery shards thst keep turning up? Who made the pottery? What happened to the enslaved people when the island started arms dealing? What bugs me us that you're both intelligent, so why didn't any of this ocvur to you?
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
Seriously? Did you watch the whole video? Suggest you go back and watch until the end before commenting something like that. The "history lesson" you see in this video is a tiny fraction of what we learned about Statia, and a tiny fraction of the discussions we had with Ruud and Alex. Ruud has dedicated years and years to researching the history of the enslaved people on that island, with the goal of bringing their story to light. Unfortunately the written history mostly ignores both the enslaved people and the pre-European inhabitants. He has published many pieces on these subjects, I'd suggest you go read some before making keyboard attacks. He is also keenly aware of the perceived hypocrisy of a white Dutch man researching the history of people enslaved by his ancestors, but it doesn't change the fact that he (and the others at SECAR) are motivated by the right reasons. If you really want to talk more about this, send us an email to sailingonelife@gmail.com. I'd love to put you in touch directly with Ruud and others currently living on Statia. But if you prefer to write angry comments and ignorantly attack good people online, go somewhere else.
@a.r.3742
@a.r.3742 2 года назад
@@SailingOneLife You could be (somewhat) right. I stopped watching at 16 min in. I don't remember when the vid was made, but in the U.S. the racial atmosphere is awful right now. The way Ruud explained the history of the island is the same glossed over version that I, and most people were taught. It was only later, that I got more information on colonialism and American colonization of the indigeous people here, and chattel slavery. The questions I was asking about Eustatius are being literally criminalized from being taught, while simultaneously racist people are being encouraged and emboldened to act out. I may watch it to the end, but I'm not promising. At this point in time, I am having less and less patience for the obliviousness of white people around race; in particular white Americans. Refusing to know is not the same as not knowing.

Reflect on your life, you are getting angry over something that happened so long ago that nobody is even alive anymore that did it or endured it. So many things to be angry about today, but even that is a waste of time. You will change nothing and you will only make yourself bitter. But congrats you yelled at random people on the internet who just wanted to share a video on a island they enjoyed visiting, guess that is a big win for you.
