Thank you for being open and vulnerable on these topics. Your channel is one of the most authentic in the outdoors/backpacking YT community. I’ve been seriously considering starting a YT channel, but it’s posts like yours here that give the most insight into the challenges to look out for. Cheers and good health to your family.

Plenty of us, I would say the majority respect your opinion on gear reviews and totally appreciate you sharing your adventures with us. There is always going to be negative BS when you put yourself out there, take it for what it’s worth. What you do is not possible without the support of your friends and family, their opinion is what matters. Looking forward to your upcoming videos.

I wouldn't worry too much about what people think about you filming things in your basement or whatever, you've got more experience than most people, you've hiked with some legends, and even if none of those things were true, you're still enjoying yourself, and there are people that do appreciate the content you post.

Thanks for keeping it real Kane, do it because you like it, there's no better reason than that and don't turn it into a chore. Good health and happiness to you and yours

You’re easily my favorite guy to watch on backpacking topics and it’s largely precisely cause you’re sincere, unpretentious, knowledgeable, and pleasant to listen to. Being unscripted is a huge advantage for you IMO. Sadly, the world has people in it to whom you could hand a million dollars and they’d bitch about it being green. If you keep doing what you do, I’ll keep watching.

You know Kane, we talk of it alot. I feel you, man social media and sound what we do it hard sometimes and I don't say to to sound like a victim, I think we're really fortunate to have success in a way in what we do. But sometime we need to go back to the basic, what's the reason we did it at first. It's ok to not record everything, to have moment on the platform where there's a short break of content, like someone with a normal job will take 2 weeks off. When my channel start working, I felt obligated and the pressure to put everything I shot as quick as possible on RU-vid and social media. After a while I arrive at a point of being exhausted, at some point last year I was asking myself why the hell I am doing that. So this year I change my way of doing it. If I take a year to edit a video, it's ok, I prefer being in a good mood with my art than being force to do it and at then end maybe not being fully satisfied with it. So yeah, do what you want, I know that it's hard sometimes cause we create a niche audience for our video, but if you feel like you want to try something, do it, at the end the important it's to like what we do . Take care Kane, seen you soon

Interesting video. I often get drawn to a channel because the content maker clearly is doing it for fun, to record something they're passionate about. I always notice when the shift to making content for RU-vid income or sponsorship $ happens. They change patterns and they change contents. Instead of being out there, hiking or skiing or camping, they're talking about gear or they're showing gear. This is happening now to one of my favorite content makers. He used to just feature the landscape and his presence within the landscape. Yesterday, i caught his latest video and it's clear he'd just gotten sponsored for his footwear. He's a subtle guy and won't directly talk about the new shoes he's now being sponsored to use. But in this latest video, we get close ups of his shoes, and there's even one set up where he's apparently drying out his shoes after a wet day, so he's got the insoles pulled out and the brand name of the shoes are right on those insoles. This, on top of his sponsored dyneema tent and sponsored dyneema pack and sponsored stove and pots and sponsored wind jacket have all changed how i internalise his contents. We know when we're being targeted for marketing, and while some of us are fine with that, it doesn't sit right with others. Thanks for your content. Good luck to your family and I hope your partner is well.

That’s an interesting perspective. There’s a big channel that I enjoy watching that has started to do that recently - basically the whole video is an add. I have no issues with a person getting paid but would rather a small commercial segment and keep the content authentic. Thanks for the feedback.

Really enjoy your no bs style sharing your experience, just keep doing what you enjoy, spend time with your family and enjoy them, don't worry about RU-vid and the silly people that pile on negative things but they themselves have nothing to contribute to society.... the world is full of people who can criticize, but don't offer value themselves.

Man you have no idea how much I can relate to everything you have said in this video. I have met so many absolute amazing folks on the internet over the last 4 years! And yup the pressure is a weird one as well. But over the years I have come to realize that what matters is that you out out the content that you love making otherwise you will inevitably make the classic ‘burnt out video’ we see pop everywhere. Keep doing what you’re doing! Glad your wife is doing better :)

Love your channel. I have been following you since almost the begining. Do what you can, when you can and especially do what you love first. I send you all my positive vibes from Montreal. I will be suporting you no matter what and don’t let anybody who are haters distract who you are. they are just haters at the end of the days and somewhat useless in this world... Keep the good work and take time for your family first! 🙏🙏

Man can I relate. I'd much rather run marathons, but I don't. I'd much rather do week long trips, but guess what- I don't. And that's okay. Another father of two here. I love all the professionally produced content on yt, but an account such as yours is much more relatable to me. If ever in doubt: The low-profile, candid approach is a treat. Thank you for your content! Health and happiness to you and your family.

Appreciate the message! Definitely gotta strike a balance. I think it’s pretty important to pursue the things you love. I don’t want to be a chauffeur to my kids, I want them to say “my dad does cool sh*t”. Minus the expletive for now…

Appreciate the honest reflection. I think your content is great and love that it is genuine- whether on trail or a gear review. I watched your Garmin watch review and I thought it was valid. I have a Fenix 6 and have used Garmin products for a long time. Your use case for the watch is different than mine. So even though I like the watch I still agreed with most of the issues you raised. Hope your wife is fully recovered soon and I’ll continue to look for your content.

Enjoy the sharing of expertise, personal opinions, and unique content that doesn't follow a routine or pattern each time. Plus, it's a bonus that your knowledge and videos are applicable to our geographic area - Calgary and the Rockies. Paul Messner had a recent video about this, too - feeling obligated to make content. Worth a watch and similar sentiments.

Your videos are great. It seems a lot of people burn out trying to keep up with content for the viewers. I'm looking longterm and want to enjoy the process and put out videos when I feel like it. Trying not to have anything else dictate my content except what interests me. Thanks for sharing.

For me it’s also about the story…for example, you don’t have to be an expert in skiing…but the story of your progress, frustrations, wins/losses would also be cool! 👊🏽🤙🏽 And I have 4 boys so I totally get the time thing! Regardless always enjoy your videos! 🙏🏽

I, and the vast majority of your subscribers/viewers, have been fortunate enough to enjoy, learn from and be motivated by your content. You’ve earned a following because of your passion, sincerity, style and your depth of knowledge, skills & experience. Basement gear studio man-cave (yeah, I’m jealous) or outdoors-based, I’ve learned or tried something new from every one of your videos. People who feel brave enough to chirp or fire a cheap shot from behind a keyboard & screen can go pound sand. Make content when & if it works for you and because you want to & can, not because you feel you have to. Keep up the good work, and glad to hear your wife is doing better. Family is priority number one, and life happens. Good friends step up and know you’d do the same for them in a heartbeat.

I hope your wife is better now, and nothing reoccurs! That's scary when stuff like that happens. You are very lucky to have friends close by to help out. It's hard, but try not to stress out too much about RU-vid. I share your frustrations with the feeling you *have* to make content. I have a crappy little channel that hardly anyone engages with, and I've had to put it on hold for a few months because my dog had to have surgery and she can't hike. And I can't carry her 😂 I don't have anyone who can mind her overnight, so I have no choice but to stay home and live vicariously through other backpacking RU-vidrs. Probably until June! By that time the entire worl will have forgotten I exist because ai haven’t posted anything to social media. Oh well. Welcome to the 21st century right?

Thanks , take care Sylvain

Kane, this was clearly from the heart and well thought out. First of all, I'm glad the Misso is doing ok. Speaking of social media, I got the word Misso from Ozzyman reviews. 😃. There's a line that Mike Tyson used once to converse about the disrespect that people feel inclined to share with others on the internet. There's a way to disagree with folks without coming off as a dick. As I have been on this side of the lens for about 12 years now, I have seen a lot of creators retire from this venture due to all the things you mentioned. Just pressure to create, time constraints, list goes on. I wish you many years of YouTubing and if you have to take a break, take it man! Matthew Posa is either taking a break or just done completely, nobody knows for sure. Take care sir. NQU
