Lots of changes are happening: moving across the country, goodbyes, and new beginnings. I’m really looking forward to sharing this next chapter with you. ❤️
After opening up on Instagram recently about the emotional rollercoaster that comes with change and dealing with my views being down on RU-vid in the midst of this really big transition, I want to say thank you to everyone who has messaged me since then. A lot of the messages were from people in their late twenties dealing with their own significant changes and all the feelings of uncertainty that inevitably follow. These messages have inspired me to make a video that focuses specifically on dealing with big life transitions. I'll be posting it at the end of this month, so look out for it. Until then, to everyone going through a change right now: even though we're on our own paths with different experiences, knowing there are other people out there taking everything one step at a time makes it feel like we're all in this together. That's something pretty special. ❤️

The year I turned 30 I moved from Edmonton Canada to Orange County, California. It was the biggest most dramatic event in my life up to that point I had to sell a house, quit my job, sell my car, and start everything brand new. But 20 years later I am still in Orange County and absolutely LOVE my life and manifested my DREAM life and you will too honey. So excited for your new adventures. xoox Wendy

Hey Bushra! I had the cutest little house in Glenora off Groat Road, I worked at Blu's downtown, left my large and loving family to move to California with no work visa. It was nuts! But 21 years later I have manifested my dream life. Wonderful husband, beautiful home, dream job, dream car, youtube channel and friends with a circle of other youtubers. I had a FULL ON NERVOUS BREAKDOWN in Salt Lake City when we were waiting for our connecting flight when we moved here. Oh m God people must have thought I was insane. But it was terrifying flying into the unknown leaving safety, love, security and comfort behind. BUT that is were GRACE lives. Faith and Hope and Grace and Hard Work, and Determination, and a Belief in Something Bigger Than Yourself To Guide You to Make Your DREAMS come true. Ingrid is going to fly fly fly towards her best and most amazing life. xoxo Wendy

Wendys loving life you are the sweetest 💜 And that is so true. I made the move to Dubai last year and couldn’t be happier. Although moving across the globe definitely had me worried as well intially but now that everything has managed to smooth itself out it feels like i definitely made the right decision!! Best of luck with your youtube channel 🙂💜💜

Wendys loving life ... I'm so glad to see that everything has turned out wonderfully for you! I'm moving to NYC from Ontario soon for grad school and I'm absolutely terrified!!! It's always been my plan to move to Southern California after graduation but I know that would be really hard to do directly from Ontario so as scary as it is I do need some study/internship experience in NYC first. I hope things work out for me too. Thanks for sharing your story 😊

Advice for a big move across the country: take less than you think you would like to bring. Seriously, get rid of most of it. Logistics of moving lots of large boxes and furniture is a pain. It felt flipping fantastic to walk into my new home with only the few things that I brought with me because I LOVED them (heirlooms and select memorabilia) . It felt even better curating and filling my new home with beautiful things from my new city.

This is really good advice. I moved from Alabama to NYC about 15 years ago. I think in the beginning I was so happy and everything was new and exciting but I’ve noticed over the last five years it has become very difficult for me to live here. It may be because of my job because I don’t want to be there anymore and it’s making it harder to live here or maybe I’m done with NYC; however moving is an emotional and mental challenge. Good luck, Ingrid.. You have tons of followers here I’m sure. Seek us out for help if you need too..

TheCurrentNatural I'm actually moving to NYC for grad school soon from another country and I'm already anxious about having to stay in the city "long term". I don't want to have to come back so I really hope after graduation I get a good job in the US but preferably in say LA because I know I need relatively more space and nature than there is in NYC. Of course I don't know your exact situation but perhaps NYC has just tired you out? I know a lot of people love the city for the first few years because it's exciting and a great place to make connections at the beginning of your career but after a certain point NYC just can't offer the kind of lifestyle most people want. It seems like constant sense stimulation overload! I can't imagine doing that for 15 years. With your experience in the city I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to get a job in another high paced but much more relaxed city- maybe Atlanta since it's in the south and closer to your hometown? I hope things work out for you 💕

As someone who has moved from New York To San Francisco (and back), New York TO Barcelona, Spain across the entire Atlantic Ocean and Barcelona To Austin,Texas (amongst many other moves) I have some major thoughts that will 100% support you in this next magical chapter in your life. While all the physical "stuff" has to be tended to properly, and logistics regarding that - the MOST important thing is taking care of your spirit along the way because the shifts in who you are becoming now and the energies behind you can echo in your soul creating some confusion. You have to know that life is a beautiful continuum, and a sacred journey. You are never losing anything or anyone. Just moving forward and opening to new possibilities and massive transformation. Since you already have some people in your life in NY and know some of the place, it really won't be as hard for you as someone just moving to a brand new city - where you know absolutely no one, or just a few people. What can really support you: Creating simple weekly rituals that honor your needs and help you to engage with life and people so you feel embraced by what you love, and nurtured by life everyday. Find a spiritual center or community for meditation or yoga (or both) near you, and go there consistently so you feel a sense of home and soul honoring to keep you happy. There are so many truly amazing secret places and people in NYC if you open yourself up to discover them! Also, find weekly or monthly events that delight you in a place you want to immerse yourself so you create simple patterns that make you feel grounded and connected while EVERYTHING around you and in you is changing. AND IT WILL CHANGE A LOT VERY FAST IN NYC!!!! I know from your videos that you have spent time in NY - but as someone who is a Native New York Girl, I have to say that full-time life there can get emotionally exhausting at times because there are SO MANY PEOPLE, tons of energies and vibrations all the time non-stop, so it really helps to cultivate consistent patterns and routines that ground you daily including getting out of the city into nature. Having a dog is great in the city because my dogs always introduced me to the best people and got me out for walks! Congratulations on your new adventure :)

This sounds a little extreme, but my best packing tip is to label boxes with the room name and a number (Kitchen 1, Kitchen 2, etc.) and as you pack them, create a spreadsheet with the box number and a brief description of what's inside. This will make unpacking sooooooo much easier! Best of luck on the big move ❤️

@CuteCoffeeGal Not extreme at all but I guess it's because this is exactly what I do when I move and it makes it sooooo much easier and stress free. People are always literally shocked that I am unpacked and all set up within a day or two of moving. For some people that's unheard of but when you label and track everything properly it's easy as can be. :)

BIG TIP: Make a OPEN FIRST box. This box will be what you need first, before your clothes arrive, before you unpack the 10000 billion boxes, before you can start the day. This should include; Toilet paper (at least a roll or two, perhaps some moist flushable wipes because you never know how your nerves will treat your G.I) Soap- Your favorite hand soap. Something that will not only clean your hands but also give you the feeling of home with a great scent. Towels- Hand towel, body towel & a back up towel. You will want to shower, you may not find the right box before that happens. Just incase, have something ready to dry your hands on, at least one towel to dry off with after showering, and one oops towel for any issues that happen during the move (leaky faucets, dropped drinks, pet innocence) Toothbrush/Toothpaste/mouthwash- New clean items that can quickly be used when you are ready for bed or an a surprise visit from friends and you've had garlic hummus just moments ago. Snacks- something easy like a protein bar or granola. Everyone loves a good snack, and you might not have gone to the grocery yet (you may not know where it is!) Medicine- Anything you take daily, plus the emergency stuff- headache, nausea, indigestion, upset stomach, ect. have a little stash, moving is stressful. chapstick- keep them hydrated. long moves with new weather can really dry you out. Hair elastic- one or two , to keep your hair up out of the way when you are in the zone! basic cleaners- one good all purpose cleaner, dish soap, glass cleaner- this will be handy when you are wiping out the cabinets before putting things away. Paper towels or reusable towels to use with the above cleaners. Anything you need daily- Have a great "travel bag" or favorite items to put in your bag when you are on the go? Put them here. A cup, A spoon, A fork.- because it never fails you need one of them and the box is somewhere in the land of boxes. Finally- comfy clothes. One pair of clothes that are great for comfortable nesting. A pair of fluffy socks, a baggy tee and pj pants, whatever makes you feel great while you build your new home. Have a great time. Remember breathe, you got this. Also- Color coding and numbering boxes really helps. Bedroom - red living room- blue Kitchen-green bathroom-yellow pet care-Purple. Make a chart, Bedroom = 5boxes, livingroom =9 boxes ect, this way you are not constantly looking and stressing for things you KNOW you packed but cant find. Also make sure you give out copies of the chart to helpers!

I'm so happy you're moving to NYC just because a bigger chance I'll be able to meet you because that's where I live right now. To be honest when you said you had a big life update a part of me was worried you were gonna leave youutbe and I know if that was the case there was a good reason for it but it would have been sad because honestly you're still one of the realest youtubers out there and I would miss you terribly. Any change is terrifying i was terrified to move to NYC being a Jersey girl my whole life and never been to the city for more than a few hours. But making the change has been the best thing I've learned more about myself and became more independent and learned that I would be ok on my own which was something that terrified me. (i started this comment before even finishing the video, now i'll finish then finish this comment) Change is always terrifying and I know when my friends talk about changes it scares me because I've lost a lot in my life and i worry with change i'll lose more but in the end change will happen and you can either let it ruin you or embrace it. I'm starting to learn to do the lather. I wish you the best of luck. :) What helped me with my move was making a list and literally what'd I do is as I go through out my day I write down what I use and such and yes the list will become massive but it helps and do it with everything like make a list for all the paper work you have to do when it comes to the apartment and questions to ask. I don't know if lists are your thing but they are mine it made the move very easy. Now the one thing I did and mostly because it was the first time i was on my own but as soon as my parents left I called a friend because I knew if I didn't talk to someone I would have broke down crying.

Hey Ingrid! I hope I can bring a little something to you because you brought a whole lot of greatness to my life in the past years. I am the same age as you, and last year I did the same move you did, except in the opposite direction and in Canada (Montreal to Vancouver). I am someone who loves to spend time alone to read, walk and think. To me, moving felt like starting a completely new life, but a new life in which I knew very well who I was from the very beginning. I had the opportunity to be anyone I wanted to be. I met new people at different places and gave myself the total freedom of being authentic without trying to act a certain way to please the new people around me. It felt like being in kindergarten and being just my true and simple self, but being conscious of it. I was surprised to realized that this brought me to develop relations with people who appreciate authenticity and who have interests that are very close to mine. Being in a new city also pushed me to be in new situations, and to spend more time alone than previously, and I discovered new facets of my personality that I had never "met" before. I am feeling even closer to myself now, and I have been able to explore new interests and passions because I was already out of my comfort zone anyway so why not try something new as well! It can feel very scary to move, but I promess the minute you land in New York it will all make sense. I wish you the very best and I'm sending you good energy

Agreed! Crying is a part of the process and you definitely feel better afterwards! I definitely cried a lot in the first few months I moved. Missing your old home and routines is fine; it doesn't have to mean you've regretted your move.

Same - and I cried a lot beforehand just from stress! It was such an important emotional outlet for me when I was moving cross-continent to cry because otherwise I was so stressed and worried I could barely function! Crying helps.

Moving tips: Label the ish out of the outside of boxes and take a picture of the outside labels and inside before you close it. If you have space (especially if your things are being driven) pack things you would hate to be without in lots of the boxes. For example, I put a roll of toilet paper in a Ziploc bag in most of my boxes and then I had toilet paper and a Ziploc bag almost no matter which I opened first. (List of must-have items at end.) Make appointments with places like the DMV now because it can take a while to get in. Check your health insurance coverage and establish a primary care doctor. If you see a therapist, start researching and reaching out. Look into ordering furniture because things like couches can be backordered weeks. Consider hiring a professional cleaner to clean your whole place before you move in. Set reminders on your phone to eat and drink water because it's easy to forget and it makes everything seem so much worse. Must have items: toilet paper, paper towels, Ziploc bags, multiple pairs of scissors, sharpies, Mack's earplugs, Advil, first aid kit Other things you might want for your new place: toolbox, household fire extinguisher Good luck!!!

Serein Wu With the cost of living here, it's really not. Most young people in NY that are fresh out of college these days move out of state if they want to find a place to live. Otherwise they have no other choice but to stay with their parents until their late 20's/early 30's regardless of whether or not they have a steady job.

I've moved across the US not once but twice in my twenties (Washington D.C. to LA then to Rhode Island for grad school) and my main pieces of advice are (1) trust your gut - as you're reassembling furniture, watching money fly out the window at random expenses, you'll think "staying in LA would've been so much easier" but I cannot even describe how proud of yourself you will feel in a few months for doing this! (2) As far as mental health goes, I just bought a foldable yoga mat (which takes up less space than rolling) specifically because I'll be working across Africa for the next few years and know that it's imperative for me to do yoga/HIIT workouts to keep anxiety at bay. I'm currently in South Africa and just used that mat in my very small room to exercise and it made a huge difference in how I feel about all of the anxiety inducing things I have to do tomorrow. Don't feel bad for taking care of your mental health (exercising, indulging in things, taking a timeout from "real life") when everything else is total chaos! (3) For building community, which is I think the hardest and most important thing of all for introverts, I have to say that it is worth it to be a bit shameless when you meet someone that you know will be a friend (trust your gut, remember!). Whether it's a work contact that you have a friend crush on and now can actually meet up with for breakfast because you're neighbors, or someone you meet randomly at an exercise class or the dog park, saying "I just moved here, we seem to be on the same page, want to get coffee?" almost always works. As someone who is shy and quiet (until I'm comfortable), I can attest to this being very stressful but totally worthwhile. Good luck! We are rooting for you (and going through it in our own lives, too!).

I've moved over 20 times in my adult life. Make a list. If you are packing, complete each space before moving on to the next and have lots of garbage bags! Get the unpacking done as fast as possible. You may not know where stuff goes but just get it out of the box and the organization will come later. Get the boxes out. And then be patient with it coming together. It can be a zen sort of thing, seeing where things want to be in your new space. Have a box to unpack first.. have your bedding, toilet paper, towels and coffee prep. First night stuff. Do your bedroom first. So when you are ready to crash you can. Take it one thing at a time. It is a lot but it also isn't. People do it all the time. There are tons of resources.. I am sure there are thousands of "moving' videos on youtube! Your relationships will change with those you are leaving in LA because you can't pop out to have coffee but gosh you can FaceTime over a cup of coffee. Be intentional with staying in touch. Finding new people.. I say get out.. join a gym, join a church (if that is your thing) join art classes, join things that interest you and you will find like minded network of friends that you have at least one thing in common with and it can snowball into finding other things too.

Hearing you say you're turning 30 next year just made me realise how /old/ I actually am and how long I've been watching you for. I've watched you since the beginning and I can't believe how much you've grown during that time. Or how much I've grown even. I'm 27 now and I decided to go back to university last year to really pursue my career. New York has always felt like the most perfect place for you. I'm really happy for you.

Hey Ingrid, I never leave comments but this video resonated with me in a pretty visceral way. I just moved to NYC about a month ago from Florida. I graduated, my parents were in the process of moving my childhood home, and I moved to NYC all within a month of each other so I completely know the feeling of massive life changes. Obviously, I have not been here long so I may not any kind of veteran but I have already found so many things about the city that help ease and heal some of the sadness and pain of moving. The first you have touched on but knowing this is where you are meant to be helps to feel everything without being overcome by sadness. It is the true definition of bittersweet. Being bold and saying yes to things that maybe I wouldn't, like coffee with a new friend who I just met, has actually already lead to some really neat friendships and while they may not last forever, some may be the best friends I will make here. Also doing the things that made me so excited to be here like becoming a MET member and seeing Broadway shows, or taking walks in the park and exploring different neighborhoods have been so so good. Like I said, I am so new still but this video meant more to me than you know! I hope you have a lovely move and welcome (for good) to the city! Maybe I will run into you one day and get the chance to tell you all of this in person ;)

Welcome to NYC!! I moved here a year ago and it was the best decision ever! One tip - pack a suitcase like you’re going on a trip for a few days so that when you get to your new spot you can easily access clothes and some essentials without having to go through all the boxes right away.

Hey Ingrid! Moving advice here! I’ve made the move from the very very north of Washington to the LA a while back and I can tell you right away the goodbyes are so weird. You’re right in that it’s not goodbye forever, but acknowledgeing that you won’t exist in the same role within the friendship can be devestating. Luckily, you’ve already been to and lived in New York. I highly recommend sinking into the things you do regularly when you’re there that bring you some joy and a sense of comfort. A few weeks in, once the excitement wears off, these things really help solidify the feeling of being home. You may also find a new community of friends from the routine. I’d also recommend having your friends maybe write some letters before you officially leave and keep them until you need them. It’s a rough, tedious, annoying transition, but going where your heart lies is worth it in every way 💕 can’t wait to see your new space!

Back in 2009, I was exactly your age when I moved to a new city. My mum and I moved in with my sister. One of the things that I did that helped me feel more "at home" is that I would cook meals that Mum made when I was a kid. I think it's important to find some favorite spots to go visit in your new city. This helps to acquaint yourself with the new culture. Every city has it's own culture and vibe. As for packing, my advice is to save the packing paper from any orders you get in the mail. Keeps your packing costs down. Do spend money on sturdy packing boxes from U-Haul. They are worth every cent! They can be broken down and re-used for storage. Congratulations and best wishes on your new move! You deserve all that is happy! :)

Moving is really hard. I have moved internationally to go to college here in the States. All my friends are everywhere in the world, and it really felt hard to reconcile with the fact that I will be living in a new environment without my friends I grew up with. But, even though saying goodbye feels like leaving a part of me behind, I was able to discover a new me and make so many amazing friends that I know will be lifelong friends. Moving to a new place forces me out of my comfort zone and really allows you to fall in love with a new lifestyle. It is worth it, and I know that you moved knowing this!!! Best wishes to you and have a great time in NYC!!!!

I've always felt better the second I get on that plane. All you have to do is make it there. Once the move is complete, you'll be able to take steps towards making a home, and maintaining your long distance friendships. You'll be able to prove to yourself that you have control over those things, and you don't have to lose anything you don't want to. It's the anticipation that's the worst.

I am so excited for you, Ingrid! While this may seem unrelated, I work a minimum-wage restaurant job on top of being a student. This usually means two things-- that I work night shifts, and that sometimes I have to wash dishes for five hours straight. Since we are allowed to have headphones in while washing dishes, Ladies Who Lunch has always been the brightest part of those shifts. It was always so calming and entertaining to hear you guys talk for a large portion of my day-- it made me feel so much less alone! I remember during one podcast you were discussing how you wanted to move back to New York for some part of your life, and my first thought was, "I really hope she does, and does it soon". While I will be missing your advice during my long shifts, I am so ecstatic that you are living your dream in real life!! I wish you all the best in your upcoming move!!

Moving is really a time to take stock of everything. On a literal level, you have to touch every single item you own and decide if you love it enough to take it with you, but you also take stock of the loves in your life and choose a direction for them to change in because it's obvious they can't stay exactly the same.

Moving to nyc for college I can COMPLETELY RELATE to the fear and nerves you’re experiencing. My biggest tip is definitely to remember why you’re doing it. And this applies not only to moves but anything in life. The move is tough. There are going to be times when you think it would’ve been easier to just stay, but when you remind yourself of the passion you have for this new chapter of your life, it really helps putting everything into perspective. Can’t wait to say I share a city with you! Love you forever and always Ingrid 💕

Hey Ingrid! I moved to NYC three years ago and it was the scariest thing I’ve ever done but easily the most rewarding. I lived in Manhattan for the first two years, but last year moved to Brooklyn and it’s my favorite place I’ve ever lived! I recently got a dog and it’s helped me meet so many amazing people in our little neighborhood - Tayto will make as many friends as you will.

I moved from New York to Seattle last summer, and it was the scariest and best decision I ever made! My best piece of advice would be to make plans before you arrive so that you feel some sort of normalcy your first week. Knowing I had something to do kept me moving, and gave me comfort every time I felt homesick. Good luck with the move!! You got this ☺️

I just completed a move and the two things that were really helpful for me were (a) making a “Open First” box with things you need immediately (mine had toilet paper, a shower curtain, tools, scissors, a corkscrew, and a bottle of wine!) and (b) get groceries delivered. With so many things going on, it can be impossible to squeeze in picking up food. It was nice to wake up in my new place and know that I could make a cup of coffee and have a quick bite before getting back to unpacking! I know this transition will be great for you! Congrats!

Hi, Ingrid! Congrats on the move! I made the permanent move from the US to New Zealand about six months ago, and it was all the things you said a big move is--exciting and scary all at the same time. My advice to you is to make sure to bring things that make you feel at home. I moved with only two suitcases of clothes. I really missed all my little decorative pieces because everywhere I lived felt temporary vs when I shipped my blankets, photos, decorative things from the US, then my flat in NZ got 100% more cozy and felt less like I was crashing in a stranger's apartment. Something I'd recommend to build your community in NYC is to start a routine. My partner and I have a local pub we go to every weekend and sit and do a crossword together. Since we're now regulars, we've made friends with the staff and have another home-y spot to go to outside our actual apt. Good luck on the move!

SO SO happy for you!! One thing that is nice for just random household items is amazon subscribe and save. You can set it to send items (like toilet paper, dryer sheets, dish soap, etc...) to your house on a schedule so you don't have to think about it and can focus on other things like finding your favorite brunch spots! It has saved me a few times. Best of luck with the move, can't wait to follow along!

Not sure if you are driving or flying. I viewed both my long distance moves as vacations and time to see the country along the way. By doing that I totally alleviated any stress that would have otherwise popped up and actually had a blast. I moved/drove totally by myself twice across Canada. The first time I moved/drove I had a trailer attached to my vehicle and with that I realized I brought far too much and life is so much more than personal possessions like furniture ect. The second time I moved across the country, I packed only things really important to me and that could fit in the trunk, (back seat my cooler for food and beloved cat). *The moves taught me that owning less is important for me. Four items that became super useful were: 1) wet/moist wipes - so many uses. 2) My own personal pillow. 3) To-Go Ware (bamboo cutlery) - I still bring them with me and use them often. 4) Thermos - very convent and fits nicely in the vehicles cup holder, avoiding the use of plastic toss away containers and cups. I hope your trip is stress free and that you find the perfect place to reside in NYC.

Label your boxes with numbers (and keep a personal list of which number corresponds to the items inside the box). Some movers can be sneaky so this is a way to securely move and know exactly what is in what box without it being boldly labeled on the outside. Best of luck!

I've moved from Arkansas to Chicago, which was CRAZY, and then having to move back for family was so heartbreaking. It's tough to transition and it took months afterwards to feel like myself again. Give yourself time to feel settled. It will be a great adventure, so just remember to focus on the positive things as you move forward.

Ah, also, in terms of building a community when you get there, make sure to attend classes (like yoga or cooking or sculpture or anything) and be brave. It's a BIG city and there are so many people looking for connections just like you. You seem like an open, lovely person, and you should just trust that you'll find some lovely people to hang with. But also, the company I do Cons with (run by women and a VERY welcoming staff) is based in NYC, so if you need some open lovely peeps, you can check out Mischief Management (they run BroadwayCon and LeakyCon, so they're a big bunch of enthusiastic nerds).

My best moving advice is for if you’re driving. Make your longest driving day the first day when you’re energized and excited to get there. Then the rest of the days, when you’re tired of being in the car and just sort of over it can be shorter and more doable. Also, try to stop for at least an hour each day at a scenic outlook point. It’ll help you refresh and re-energize and you’ll get to see some truly beautiful sights you might not ever have the chance to see again.

Great way to put it "visceral connection" I have described it like that as well as I feel it's my soul city. People tell me that I only feel that way because I only go for few days so its vacation, but I go other places and I don't have that feeling, for instance California as beautiful as it is gives me a heavy sad feeling in my heart...but NY feels light and like relief to be there. I'm happy for you, making your dreams come true. Love from Houston TX :)

This is sooo true! My hubby and I first ventured to NYC 8 years ago as a graduation gift for me after graduating law school. We immediately fell in love. As a compromise, we live in a wonderful small college town close to relatives but we make no apologies for traveling to NY for a week twice a year, we’ve done it ever since. I leave a piece of my heart there everytime, but I’m content bc I also love our home town. Like you said, we’ve tried other cities but nothing ever gets us the feels like NY.

I’ve moved across the country multiple times, and it is a hassle. Good luck! For building community, I highly recommend putting yourself out there. Try out new hobbies or activities that involve other people. For me, that was finding a new dance studio and going to the museums in my new city. The internet is a gift for staying in touch with everything that’s going on in your area, especially somewhere big like New York so you can do it! I loved seeing this since I’m also about to make a big move, for me to France for a year. It’s a lot of logistics and a mix of fear and joy. But everyday is about making small steps to be ready until you’re there and it’s happening. I hope you enjoy this time and best wishes in New York!!

Hi Ingrid, I moved from France to New Zealand for 6 months, then to Australia for a year, and now am living in Germany for the last 2 years. As you can imagine, I didn't take a lot with me and couldn't take any furniture or anything. I can't give you any tip on that :) But I understand the emotional state involved. My tip to adapt as seamlessly as possible, is to try and make new connections where you live. For me it was through sport, I play volleyball and met all my new friends by walking in a new club and integrating the team. You could do yoga, classes at the gym, join a book club, whatever makes you happy, and you will automatically meet people who have the same interests as you. I hope this helps! Good luck with the moving :)

Hi Ingrid! Last year around this time I packed up my life and moved to New York myself. It was scary and wonderful, and I wouldn’t change my decision for anything in this world. This city has brought me life, it has brought me love, and it has brought me more strength than I could imagine. If I may be so bold, I would love to apply for the position you have available. I have a Journalism degree, and I have held jobs at a Performing arts center, and a music marketing company that worked with names such as Taylor Swift and Steven Tyler. Most of my experience is in PR and marketing, though my passion right now is in the arts. I would love to speak with you more about this. Hope you have a gentle moving experience, you won’t regret it- I know! 😌

Hi Ingrid! This video really resonated with me. Last September I made a similar cross country move, only I moved from NYC to LA. After 10 years in NYC, I got an amazing job offer in LA and I listened to that inner voice. It was such a hard move in so many ways. All of the goodbyes, the extreme environmental change, a completely different way of life. I can honestly say it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. All the logistics can be so overwhelming but it will be worth it in the end. Best of luck during this huge adventure. xoxo

I’ve moved to four different states in my life; though there is plenty of hardship that comes along the way, the blessings that come from it and so much to your life. In case you do forget something, I would pack a small emergency kit with little things like hair ties, tissues, baby wipes, a small roll of toilet paper, etc. Just in case you’re in a crunch and need something quick. And maybe even pack a little treat in there for when times are getting rough. Another tip is to remember to stay flexible and get involved. Being in a new space and getting into a new routine can be hard, but being flexible, trying new things, and getting involved in whatever activity you enjoy can really help you meet new people and feel more comfortable in a new city. I hope the move goes well, and I know you’ll do some amazing things.

I moved from cross country to Colorado 3 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did! Honestly, the first year was hard trying to find people to connect with. I recommend attending MeetUps to get to know people. I met my best friend that way and I now have a girlfriend and life is great. I also recommend to just do and go and to try not to get too much into your head as I know how emotional it can be to leave your "old life" and loved ones. Just be excited and go with the flow! Try not to have high expectations for anything :)

So excited for you!!! I feel like I've been evolving alongside of you throughout your (and my own twenties) and it's been a privilege to share in, and hear about your life and journeys along the way. I feel like there have been a lot of parallels in our lives, but also many differences - so I've always been so grateful to share in, and learn from your experiences. This big move is a particularly exciting one to me as well because it comes at the same time of my biggest move as well. Hoping to hear about your experiences, and advice on not only packing and the logistics, but how it feels to leave your home and safety net to pursue a dream, what it's like to set up a 'new' life and everything in between.

I am considering a big move like this in a year so to see your journey will be a great way for me to get where to start! I would recommend sorting out one room at a time or one room in the morning, another room in the afternoon. This will help you from getting so overwhelmed and keep your mental state in a more positive light. But setting up your bedroom is where I think is an area you should focus on first. Having a room that is meant to be calming and relaxing all set up (even if its a temporary set up) will allow some piece of mind. The rest of your place could be a crazy mess but as along as your room is all set up then the rest won't matter until the next day.

I really needed to watch this video today. I moved cross country from Florida to California and it was relatively smooth for me but I wasn’t super prepared and had to do a lot of figuring out when I came out here. My go getter personality thriiived off of that move though! My boyfriend was planning to move out here (also from the east coast) and ultimately decided recently he did not feel ready to make that big of a move (not because of me, and we are still together, but because it is, indeed, big.) My positive experience had me downplaying the fact that it is a lot to take on. And there are many emotions involved with a move like that. Watching this video made me emotional because it helped me realize all the changes that come from moving cross country, and even though I was “okay” from diving in head first, that will not always be the case for everyone. You have granted me the perspective that I no longer should be upset he isn’t making this move out here, because when one of us does move to be with the other, it’ll be the right time and done correctly with the right planning. Thank you, Ingrid! I wish you all the best in your transition! Ps. When I moved to Cali the best gift someone gave me was a tiny succulent, because with the right care, succulents will grow where they are planted, and so will you! Caring for one might be a nice little reminder of that when things get hard.

First of all, thank you for always making such authentic content and sharing so much of yourself with the internet. I moved across the country almost two years ago now and didn’t know anyone and one thing I would say is be patient with yourself. It’s a huge transition (bigger than I ever anticipated) and I wish I had given myself the space to grieve a little and be scared. On building a community I would say introduce yourself as someone who is new to the area. A girl in my apartment complex who I’ve been having in passing conversations with just recently found out I had moved knowing no one and she said if she had known she would have extended friendship much earlier.

Definitely make sure to try simple ways of getting to know the smaller community of your neighborhood and neighbors (it is possible and it does still happen people!). There are still gonna be times where you'll be lonely, but just know that these transitions take time and you can absolutely do this! I started joining volunteer work on Saturday mornings and not only was it important to give to others, it really helped me in equal measure by getting to know people I might not ever have met before. Making friends that come from various walks of life- for me at least- is one of the best ways to gain perspective outside of yourself and to feel connected to a new place :) lots of love Ingrid!

I have made a few semi-big moves through the last 8 years for college & graduate school (KY to NC, then KY to FL). I am currently in the process of moving from Miami, FL to Seattle, WA (!!). I am looking forward to all your videos documenting this big change while I go through a similar experience. I usually take time in the weeks prior to the move to really declutter - donate clothes I don't love, trash any home goods that aren't being used or in bad shape, etc. I also sold almost all of my furniture in FL and plan on starting fresh once I arrive on the West Coast. I moved furniture during one of my large moves and I found that it was super expensive and a lot of my furniture was scratched/damaged. Best of luck as you start this new chapter!!

For my emotional and mental health I usually have a backpack that I keep a few things that bring a sense of comfort and home no matter where I am. Try to involve all 5 senses and it can help ground you and make you feel at ease even in a new environment :)

I’ve moved from Maine to Colorado and back again. My advice for a long distance move is first practical; take the time to find out how you want to get from here to there. I’ve used pods and uhaul trucks and for me I was way more comfortable moving with my stuff rather than be beholden to someone else doing it for me. My second advice is to make sure you follow through on keeping in touch with family and friends, it will help keep you grounded when you find yourself homesick. For finding a new friend group, as a religious person I joined a church in the area and got involved there but I would suggest you find a group that does something you are passionate about and get involved which them. you will have a common interest and something to talk about, just be genuine and present when your with the group and friendships will happen naturally. Congrats and good luck, everything will be great!

On another note, I moved to NYC almost two years ago and will admit it can be kind of hard to build a community here since things are so fast-paced and people are very career oriented. With your connections and work and all though I'm positive it'll all happen naturally and be great - just gotta give it time :) Always here if you ever need an ear or wanna grab a coffee or something once you're settled. I just want to say as someone who will be 30 this year and has done 2 cross country moves in the last 5 years (Texas to Wisconsin, Wisconsin to DC), it's hard but worth it. The planning and logistics will happen or they won't, but roll with the punches as they come and be flexible. You can do it. Immerse yourself in your new place, it'll be hard at first, you'll think about all the people and things you miss but plan activities in your new city that are exciting and fun and will make you miss less. It's a change and an adjustment but you'll learn more about yourself through it. Good Luck, Ingrid! I'm rooting for you.

I moved from small town North Carolina to Seattle when I was 19. Also was following a visceral connection to a city that I love. This sounds lame but I took my mom’s favorite blanket with me bc it smelled like her and when I was having really hard days it made me feel close to home and kept me warm. Also, I recommend getting to know your neighbors and people in your community by volunteering. It’s a great way to connect with people and make friends while getting the opportunity to serve others. Lastly, decide on your primary care doctor/eye doctor/dentist in the first few weeks of living there so that should you have an emergency, you don’t have to decide where to go/fill out a million forms. Wish I had done that!

I’m watching this so late but this video has me so emotional. I went to university in New York City and although by the end I needed a bit of distance from the city, I never stop loving and missing it. I’ve since moved to tashkent, Uzbekistan, which has obviously been a hard transition, and I often think about New York and how for so long it was my dream to live there, and then it was my dream to live in Central Asia, and how I’ve now lived two dreams yet neither of them have been completely smooth and easy. Life takes you crazy places but you never forget the places you’ve been 😭❤️

Happy for you indeed! And a suggestion. IF there is someone at the new place who can take deliveries for you, ship a basic bath and cleaning kit filled with things you already use. It will be there when you arrive, and a few familiar things right off the bat will ease the stress level a little.

I moved all the way from Pakistan to Hamburg, Germany almost 2.5 years ago! Where hardly anyone speak English, amd learning German has proven to be quite tough for me! For me it is not even an option to go back and forth to meet my family & friends! But it has taught me SO MUCH! Apart from the big things, you learn so much in little moments! I wish you all the best Ingrid, and it was lovely to hear how your meditation is supporting you! I feel the same about it! You will do great! Sending you lots of love and light! 🌟

Ingrid, I’ve been watching you for so long and it was always evident that you had a very strong connection to NYC. I knew you would eventually be moving there, and I’m so excited for you! Being someone who lives only a couple of miles from NYC, I can confidently say that you will love it. I’ve been going there my entire life, and it is truly a city like no other. Hopefully this raises the chances of getting to meet you one day. Good luck on the move and just know that people are very excited for you.

Congratulations!! Best of Luck! I just moved back to New York 9 months ago! I was born and raised in NYC and moved to Miami 7 yrs ago but never got use to it. My fiancé moved with me 7 months ago. It’s been a little harder for him because he left everything in Miami. His parents and his clients(he’s a photographer) to start all over again. But this is his dream since he was a kid. You will do great!!

I moved from Italy to London 9 months ago and I’m so happy with the choice that I’ve made! Not sure if you are moving all your stuff, but a good piece of advice is to bring with you at least some objects from your actual apartment that will help you feeling at home even in a different city!

I’m moving to NYC permanently this summer too! It’s been a stressful and scary process so far but I know it’ll be worth it when it’s all said and done. Change is a good thing! 💕

Being brave is hard but so worth it! You clearly are brave in so many ways so give yourself grace in the lonely and frustrating times. It takes time to make community but my father always says in any new situation give yourself 6-9 months to find your place and people you connect with. It’s served me well in many situations especially when I have felt lonely or impatient. So when you get there take time to get to know the area you live in, go to art classes, wine tastings, book readings or whatever events are near your home that sound remotely interesting and you’ll find your people.

So happy for you. You always seemed more alive in New York. Four years ago, I moved from Illinois to Arizona for a teaching job, and I’m still living in Arizona. It feels more like home then Illinois ever did even though that is where my family lives. Sometimes finding your happiness and your home means moving away from what you know and who you love. As for moving advice, get to know your neighbors and neighborhood. Knowing more about the area you are living in helps to make you feel more comfortable.

Goodluck on your move! I lived in new york for a couple of years and I can honestly say it was the best couple of years of my life, and I actually saw you there once at a cafe but was too shy to say hi! I had to move for work, but the dream is to one day move back to the city. New York is such an amazing, diverse place to be in and you will absolutely love it! I wish you an easy move and nothing but the best!

Best of luck on your move! Things always work for the best or not what you expect, but it's always great to reflect and grow either way.
