Watched all the way through and suddenly remembered a story my ex-wife told about one of her cousins who'd had a mastectomy and wore prosthetics in her bra. One day she was driving alongside an 18-wheeler and realized the driver was trying to sneak a peek down her blouse... so she pulled one of the prosthetics out, waved it at him and yelled, "IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED TO SEE?!?!?"

What do you say to a one-legged hitchhiker? Hop in! I lost my leg at age 9 to bone cancer and I’m now 68. Hated using my prosthetic leg, whose name was Ringo, by the way. I have no hip joint and working the whole apparatus was slow and cumbersome. Quit using it at age13. You and I have proven we can do anything. I’ve scuba dived, ridden a bike thousands of miles and grew up working on a farm. Keep up the good attitude!

When Jamie said that all lot of people with disabilities these days seem to be wrapped in bubble wrap was spot on! I have a mate who only has one hand due to a birth defect, and he's a brilliant golfer. He get's challenged all the time, and always wins! He told me the same thing Jamie said a few years ago. I absolutely loved this chat, and after learning more about Jamie helps me admire him very much, that and he has awesome tattoos. Sliante, to you two!

I have spina bifida too! I was just about to write my own spiel about life with a disability when I spotted your comment lol. @thisdamnthingy, what is your SB type/level, if you don't mind my asking? I have myelomeningocele spina bifida, and my level is L4-L5. I used to walk full-time but I had to start using a wheelchair more and more as I got older and started having joint pain and tethered cord and fun stuff like that. Currently in a chair full-time because I can't wear my shoes or ankle-foot orthotics until 3 (yep, THREE) pressure sores on my feet heal up.

That was a brilliant interview. Brilliant! Because of the laughter! Here in America, the focus would more often then not, been on the sort of “oh so tragic, how do you deal with such a condition?” But there in Ireland,no, not a tearjerker spin, just life, as it happens, and the resilience of the human condition, and the laughter of 2 friends just talking!

Watching from Texas, and a huge facts fan. I would never have known that Jamie was different in any way from the facts vids. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I was born with a cleft lip and palate, at birth my Dad could put his whole thumb on my upper lip and it wasn't there, just gums. In a way, I can sympathize with you Jamie in having such an aesthetic disfigurement. I had to learn to live with it and I was still able to serve in the US Army, and go on to marry an amazing and beautiful woman and have two wonderful kids with her. I love your tats and especially that leg one! I too like I have things on me that help the days get by easier so all of my tats are that way. Sorry for the long comment but all the love.

I was born with a disability and am in a wheelchair. I was really big many years ago (muscular) and people use to think that I was in an accident and became disabled. I use to and some times still do get people coming up to me and saying things like "I am so sorry for you" or "it must be so hard for you" before they even know anything about my situation. It doesn't happen as much as I have gotten older but every now and then.

I’m a Rehab Physician in the States. Frequently the socket is made of Kevlar nowadays. The post is made of a metal alloy. Yes, there are more high level knee joints available now. But commonly, people who are used to a certain type of prosthesis construction, it’s hard to switch to something new/different. I would say if I were writing the prescription for the prosthesis and the patient did not want the cosmetic cover, fine with me. I had one patient who had Insane Clown Posse painted on it. With LED lights. 😉

Love you guys! I do appreciate people with an open, really honest and joyful laugh, out of their hearts and with no "artificial flavouring" (being on a camera and The Internet). Most of the time video-recorded people in an interview situation seem distant and "professional" to me, with a nearly frightening screen presence, and totally serious and aware of the attention. But I can see that sitting next to you two, chatting along would neither be awkward nor would I feel terribly like an outsider. I just had to tell you that both of you always just radiate a massively positive mood and have an incredibly open-minded and happy way of dealing with people. That is infectious like hell and might even keep my personal tendency to initially mistrust or have a overly sceptic perception at bay for some time. Keep it up, cheers to Ireland from Bavaria! P.S.: Also, I finally found out about the mechanics of a robot leg like that a bit more, as well as the experience with it in daily use (ahhh, it can be locked, that makes sense!). I think it always was kind of a mysterious device with too many sci-fi references to me :). Thanks for the insights, Jamie!

Don't ever see Jamie standing or walking on the Try Channel so this is all new to me. Had a high school friend who would run around the school track with me when I was practicing. After graduation I went in the Navy and he went in the Army. He was sent to Viet Nam where he ended up being wounded and lost his right leg right up to the hip. The prosthetic was almost useless since there was no stump the move the leg. He just went with out 99.99% of the time. He could go faster with crutches than you can walk. He would travel and go on safaris to Africa and owned a sailboat and sailed extensively. He never let it slow him down. He has sadly passed away a few years ago. Coming up on my 60th class reunion soon. He'll be on that growing list of those not there.

And I always say, and try, to jump into life with both feet! Super interview. I found the physical aspects of your leg. I didn't think it was wood, but I thought it would be like a hard plastic, leg shaped. Thanks for setting us straight! Will miss you on Facts. Looking for your channel now. Jamie, I have spina bifida. I used to walk with crutches full time but have used a wheelchair full time for a few years while healing from a disability-related injury. I can relate to the "learning to walk" sentiment because whenever I get new ankle-foot orthotics, I walk like a baby deer for like 3 days. I'm awkward and shaky and get tired faster than usual. Many people don't get why it's so hard for me to adjust. I'm nervous about getting back to walking after my injury heals up. It has been a few years now (typical for this type of injury, a pressure sore) and I can tell my legs are getting weaker. Thank you for sharing your story!

Proud of you for getting in the pool and overcoming your insecurity. I looooove swimming but am not a massive fan of swimsuits. I am plus size and have a variety of scars and deformities that are more visible in a swimsuit, but it was SO freeing to stop giving a shit about all that and wear a comfortable suit rather than a big t-shirt and shorts.
@AdorkableArtist92
@AdorkableArtist92 5 лет назад
and also I'm well-known enough at the wound care clinic (lost count of how many pressure sores I've have since they first started in 2012) that I get away with absolute nonsense no one else would. I can be hella late and wheel in with the coffee that made me late, and they let me take it in the room with me. If I fall asleep waiting for my turn (yay sleep apnea! I can fall asleep anywhere if I'm bored and under-caffeinated enough), they'll just get to work fixing up my bandages gently so I don't have to wake up. I always do anyway but it's sweet that they try. I hear all the gossip from nurses and they've become my friends.

In high school, the basketball coach taught me some really basic aspects of basketball, and I remember one day she was watching me practice and she goes, " your form is better than some of the players on my team!" and I just remember feeling heat on the back of my neck from the death stares of the few basketball players in my class. oooops.
