I often find myself thinking of Ike nowadays, mostly wondering what he would think of what his country has become, not to mention what has become of the party that nominated him. I think he would be appalled at how divided and leaderless it has become, at how the middle class has been hollowed out, small-town America has been gutted, and how for so many Americans, it is now like a third world country.
Eisenhower was asked to run in 1952 by Republican moderates who were afraid the right wingers were going to nominate the ultra right wing Robert Taft. Taft was the son of President Howard Taft.
@@dfirth224Eisenhower asked Taft to be his running mate instead of Nixon but Taft turned him down. Taft was a good person but had cancer and died a few months later.
