You are supposed to swim parallel to shore- do not fight it bc it will exhaust you.

I heard a life guard say just lay back and ride it out to sea then swim back

Yeap, that's exactly what you should do. Go with the flow. Then, swim parallel back to where the waves are breaking and swim back. I think people panic and get gassed out.
