Jose was my idol when he came up to the majors. I've always loved the Oakland A's with Rickey Henderson... Man, I was 4 years old and I was Rickey Henderson! I used to slide on concrete just pretending to be him. When Jose came up in late '85 for 29 games & taking ROTY in '86, bye-bye Rickey and I even grew my hair his length, wore #33 until my last game for the San Bernardino Spirit, had his batting stance even had the facial twitches down and constantly cracking my neck.. There goes my HERO!

As a life long A's fan I got annoyed with Canseco at times ... but now I really like the guy. I believe SF Chronical writer Scott Oster once wrote "Canseco's idea of a baseball game is simply a sequence of four or five opportunities for him to walk up to the plate, and try to hit a home run." .... Well that may be true and if it is I respect about him ... he is a completely real and honest person.

Contrary to popular opinion, even if we pretended he never used steroids he actually was not a HOF player. He had a tremendous peak in the late 80s to early 90s and a couple of great seasons after that, but he was mostly up and down the last 8 years of his career. He had tremendous bat speed and power in his prime, don't get me wrong, and there are worse players in the HOF but even if we were to welcome in McGwire and Bonds, I don't think its a given that Canseco gets in, unless he gets some credit for his book. I think he actually gives steroids a little too much credit, if they really brought him from a career minor leaguer to a near HOFer, then why did his twin brother, who also used steroids, do quite poorly in MLB? I'm pretty sure if all it took was more steroids his brother would have taken more and gotten those multi million dollar contracts as well. I wonder if a prime Canseco had access to better steroids like Bonds did if he would have hit over 70? I think even with the steroids, the great hand eye coordination etc, you need tremendous natural power to hit that many.

He would have been a hall of fame player if it wasn't for steroids. You still have to know how to hit the ball and be a natural talent that works hard. But he wouldn't have had as many home runs as he did. He ratted out all of his friends and people who connected him. You should not be taking everyone down with you. Maguire would have been another one. Before Mark started the road his first season he hit 39 home runs and he was athletic, fit but skinny. So he ruined himself by cheating as well. Barry Bonds same thing. But again you still have to have skill.
