Microscopic footage of dirty water before and after it was filtered with the LifeStraw.
At the end of the video I used tryptic soy agar petri dishes to grow the microbes in the dirty water before and after it was filtered. It was incubated for 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius.
Camera - Nikon D3300
Microscope - Leica ATC 2000
Microscope magnification of each shot is shown in the bottom right hand corner.

Well It uses standard 0.2 micron filter fibre. I assume made by the couple companies that make such fiber. as long as the filter cloth is reliably made.... There isn't much to go wrong. Many much more expensive filter units use same filtering size. Mostly lifestraw is cheap, because it is bare bones. Their whole unit cost kinda what some filter replacement ments costs on other units. Which pretty much tells the story. Lifestraw costs what their filter element costs. It is filter element in a tube and the tube costs nearly nothing. It isn't magic. Just bare bones. Also since their unit doesn't cost that much less than what replacement fibre filter units costs on other devices..... Filter materials come from similar grade sources. On other units one is paying for the pumping units, extra secondary filters, active carbon catridges and so on. And should one go much higher in price, then one can start to see just even smaller filter size. Go all the way and one has reverse osmosis kit, since filter is tight enough to filter out salt molecyles.

@jacksonsmith2955
@jacksonsmith2955 2 года назад
@@taowaycamino4891 That isn't entirely incorrect, but viruses, heavy metals, and pesticides (the three items mentioned) are far rarer than bacteria and protozoa. In a remote location that isn't near farm land or an industrial complex you don't need to worry about lethal amounts of heavy metals (things like uranium, lead, gold, and iron) and pesticides (chemicals used on crops typically to kill bugs), as those problems are almost entirely man made. Viruses are a bit more complex, but they cannot survive long without a host. The normal way they spread is by being excreted through a living being already infected with it (relevantly right now through sneezes), so the only real danger is if there's an animal corpse upstream and even then the viruses can't necessarily infect humans, as they generally specialize to best infect certain types of animals. Bacteria and protozoa are generally likely to cause illness, but live everywhere in massive quantities, so the chance of at least a _couple_ of them being dangerous is extremely high. Bottom line is that the product decreases your chances of getting sick from a near guarantee to an anomaly.

Great video that shows a product that works. I never bought a LifeStraw because I didn't like the idea of drinking directly from a highly questionable water source. I'm with team Sawyer. But seriously, scoop out the water, pre-filter it using a piece of cloth a few times, filter it using the LifeStraw or Sawyer, then boil it if you're still worried about it. Whether you believe it or not, pre-filtering actually removes a lot of contaminants, and of course it depends a lot on the type of cloth you are using, but it still works even if you are using the t-shirt you're wearing.

@@backwoodsbaby9729 , I'm arguing from the same perspective as the video, that is for the outdoors like camping, hiking, biking and specifically SHTF. I might go as far as to say that the filter in your fridge cannot perform this task. And even if it could, it would be severely limited by the volume of water filtered before it breaks. Your filter is for 1st world problems, where the water is so clean that the chemicals that make it clean are purportedly killing you. It's a final stage filter. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Glad to see these things work so well. I keep one in my BOB but haven’t had to use it yet. It’s worth noting that multi-stage filtration and boiling is still superior, as you can filter to a similar degree and then kill any remaining microbes. If you use charcoal in the filter you will also remove a significant proportion of heavy metals and chemical pollutants. For heavily contaminated water, filter several times before boiling. But obviously that requires stopping to set up a fire and a filter station. It’s also worth carrying a pack of ph test strips in your kit to help measure water quality.

As somebody who's naturally curious as well and had a microscope growing up, I'd recommend against looking around your house with a microscope. You'll "bug" (haha pun kinda intended) yourself out. It's amazing what accumulates in living spaces. Unless you're an OCD riddled hypocondriac, your house is nasty under a microscope. Most things live in harmony with us, either helping/ignoring us or being generally harmless outside of the body, but it's still really freaky to see *exactly* how many microbes are chillin on your doorknobs, faucets, devices, and floors. Unless you harcore sanitize your kitchen top to bottom every day, you'd probably be pretty grossed out in there too, and maybe even still.

*What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. If you want to do a Pt. 2 you should test the performance after filtering certain amounts of water. For example get a larger sample of dirty water and only use that water for control, and then test how much is left over after 1st use, and then after pumping 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 litres of the dirty water through it. I don't work for Life Straw but I've dealt with them in a retail environment and I will say they're not trying to sell you your daily use water filter. This is an emergency item to use if you're stranded and things haven't gone according to plan. If you're planning a backpacking or camping trip and intending to filter all your water, there are more resilient alternatives designed for that (including Life Straw branded ones). Some of them are even water bottles with a filter in the main chamber!

One of your most interesting videos. I've always been curious if these special water filters are truly efficacious. Thanks for this insightful and helfpful video.
