i was surprised at how polite and kind the interviewers are with the girls. they seem to be very respectful and grateful to be allowed to see and share lifestyles of gothic lolita! about ten years have passed since this small documentary was made, so i hope that every featured girl lives her dream now. i hope that Manamu finally got her passport, Aran is a popular artist now and Hiyoko (or Hiiko? there are two versions of the spelling of her name in subtitles) and her mother fulfilled their dream of opening a clothing store. and if they didn't, i hope that they are happy, no matter what they are doing now. this documentary shot me right in the heart, so i'm crying. it was wonderful to see and enjoy so many unique dresses, artworks and locations. Yhmar21hEiro, many thanks for uploading this video!
@@lo4d3dgun In ancient Japan, emperors and other "living deities" would not talk in public because their power of words (kotodama) was believed to be too high for profane chats. Probably something related to this.
idk the reason and the comments are saying different things(literally only 2) but I wouldn't talk in public for like 90% but then there would be that one interview where I'd say something extremely quotable and everyone would stare
I remember watching this so long ago, and then for some reason it became region blocked for me for a long time. Now it isn't and I was finally able to watch again! it totally re-sparks my love for lolita! I wonder where some of these girls are now? They were all so sweet and talented I hope they achieved their dreams...
I know that this comment is reeeeeeeeeally old, but: 1) Mana-sama is a cross-dresser, meaning that he publicly dresses as a woman, specifically as a goth-lolita. He actually does the modeling campaigns for his firm Moi Meme Moitie (
I know this was meant to come off as informative, however "Cross-dresser" is a very dated term. And not every man and masculine person that happens to dress a bit feminine is automatically one. I believe at one point he also said he just does his own thing and he never necessarily labeled himself as anything like that (correct me if I'm wrong tho). Also the not talking thing might just be his image, probably for the "mysterious" and gothic affect that he obviously tries to present, idk just saying
@@iforgotmyusername11in the Gothic & Lolita Bible, Mana described his feminine style as the maiden aspect of himself, the other as a youth, that both the maiden(girl)an' youth(boy)are both a part of who he his. In some ways, when I was younger, it help't me realise, slowly, I was a multigender afab(took me years te find the wirds te describe it, in a condensed way).
I love to see people pursue their dreams and passions. They truly are enjoying themselves no matter what people think. I got into punk in high school and had a blast making my own clothes and showng friends hot to put studs on, help dye our hair, sewing patches. the time of my life!
Mana-sama is awesome. I love the fact that he is so into his character of a doll that he never talks, that takes real power of will. Talking is east, keeping quiet is not.
I love Hiyoko’s and Arans art so much I wish there was some information about them there art is so beautiful and cool I hope they become artist and fashion designers ❤
You can! Dress up in lolita, that is. Just go for it! ... unless ofcourse your country somehow prohibits it? Other than that; our community is always open for the people, who want to enjoy the fashion and the asthetics.
I actually clicked on this link cause it said Mana Sama interview. I was like: O___O don't tell me he speaks in it?!?!?!?! O_O But of course, once more, he used his telepathic powers and made a cute goth lolita girl into a mind slave. Uhhh Mana-sama, you never change.
This video is so great! I wish there were more intensive fashion "worlds" here in the US aside from Hot Topic and urban wear... It's so much harder here to wear clothing that you like rather than what is appropriate for work and jeans and a t-shirt otherwise. Makes me think about this stuff around Halloween!
From what I know Japan is even more conservative than the US and if anything, it'd be "harder" to wear alt fashion there. The reason for the birth of such fashion there are probs the overbearing cultural norms.
Lolita exists in the U.S. too. I mean, I literally am an American lifestyle Lolita who has learned to read, write, and speak Japanese and been to Japan twice. I own 18 coords and counting, and thats not cheap. My atepie coat alone is 350 dollars and that took dedication to get. There are communities in most major U.S. cities, and I have friends across the country, thousands of miles apart from each other, as well as in Japan and Europe, so yea, it's no longer a Japan only thing, even if it started in and is still heavily rooted in Japan (tho in the past 10 years we now have American and European indie brands, and China now rivals Japan in many ways for production and importance)
@@petravonsakray Yeah, the number of unique styles/aesthetics has exploded in the last few years. It's great that there are so many welcoming communities for Lolita and other less common fashion types now, regardless of where you live, and I was not the most informed 12 years ago when I added this comment. It's really cool that you have a whole wardrobe of Lolita pieces--I know they aren't cheap!! I've been into clown core recently, but I find it hard to stick to just one style/aesthetic in my closet.
the moi meme moitie store was so beautiful! it’s a shame it’s no longer there mana is charming, beautiful and mysterious as always! the 2000s japan fashion and music scene…what a dream it’s refreshing to see the interviewers being respectful and engaged
I know that sometimes it make's Mana look a little egotistical, but I kinda like that he dosn't really speak in public, you get most people that do so I like that it's a little different, also I really like looking at the girls that talk for him, they wear really nice outfits and their voices are nice too.
You should check out the Gothic Lolita Bible magazine. They provide some sewing patterns, but remember large sizes are not the same as in America or England, they are way smaller. If I remember correctly a large is like a size 10 in the US. But you can always grade the patterns large or small.
Message from mana sama to girls who love gothic and lolita: this style is not influenced by fashion i hope it's your style, your way of life no matter what anyone tells you.i want you to love this world for all your life.
That's probably the shortest interview I have ever seen (I did watch for mainly Mana afterall). But do people still live in Japan like that? I'd love to go shopping there
If anybody is watching the anime "Another" the doll museum at 4:28 is almost a dead on replica, even showing of the 2 conjoined dolls at 4:42 no less. Very interesting!

This documentary made me so happy ❤ hope this girls realized their dreams
thats amazing how you make your clothes ^-^ im still learning nd havent made anything good at all >.< how long did it take you to master sewing ?:3 i love looking like a lolita too x3 i think the dresses are really cute
Mana's such an enigma....I couldn't help but giggle at the whole not talking thing, but it's cool!! He's very graceful. Plus I want his gloves XD And...is it just me, or does he look a little bit like Jareth from Labyrinth? (In the most wonderful of ways....)
I know the feeling. I live in a small, closed-minded, racist town. I get made fun of a lot because of how I dress, how I'm learning the Japanese language and culture, and how I listen to foreign music. But I still be myself and do what I want. As Dr. Seuss says, "People who matter don't mind, and people who mind don't matter." I wear a large variety of Lolita fashions, and that makes me happy. Wearing a T-shirt and jeans everyday doesn't. I stick with what makes me happy.
In fact, he lives in a "kinda normal house" but inside is like a chaos of creation (music, designs, inspiracion of gothic themes, etc) I think his aura makes all the job...the mistery and all..
@XTheWickedShadowX It depends on what their exact style is. The style is known as "gothic lolita", yes, but there are many lolitas. Some are sweet lolitas, others are white lolitas or black lolitas, gothic lolitas, classic lolitas and so on. It depends on the person how he/she would want to be.
@10:55 that poor girl :( Shes so beautiful! I know she would be so gorgeous even without makeup. Shes a lolita, so she has a beautiful heart. I want to give her a hug and let her know how beautiful she is!
