Chipping is a controversial technique, but it's my all-time favourite. It allows you to add more visual detail, contrast and texture to your models. In this tutorial I'm going to show you how I approach the first layer of light superficial chips painted by brush. Acrylic paints are great for this job, but I also use oil paints and the speckling technique.

This series is epic! Excellent work, and thank you so much for the videos :) Oh, and the "No Chipping Challenge" is something I would like to try for sure.

Thank you Evan! No Chipping Challenge might be the hardest thing ever for me, but there might be subjects which are really better off without it. An unpainted raw steel finish on a factory tank - you can't have chips if the tank isn't painted!

Jokes aside, modern tanks like Leopard 2A6 are great subjects that don't need chipping because they are often well kept, but can still look interesting with heavy layers of dust and mud.

I believe it has to do with how you use the brush, but mainly how you take care of it. But yes, I'm pleasantly surprised with its lifespan :D

Martin you are a chipping wizard if I ever did see one. This is probably the most challenging part of the weathering phase for myself. I've always thought less was more, but hell, the more the merrier. Watching those chips multiply was extremely satisfying. I must invest in a good natural brush with a fine tip! Please sir carry on! Cheers!

Nearly every time at the end of your videos I think,..'humm he's gone too far and lost the reality of the model' (if possible with a ball tank). The chipping looks too bright and almost new. Dying to see your darker effects in next video. Fantastic video series buddy

Very impressive. One of the best channels focusing on scale models, though there are lots of other good channels. What are the equipments you use to film? Do you use magic hand tripod to secure your camera?

Great video. You might mean 'glaze' rather than 'filter' (?).
@ScottKenny1978
@ScottKenny1978 4 года назад
A filter is an effect to just slightly change the color, glazes are stronger.

Hi. Very nice video series. I have a question. You introduced the speckling technique by first diluting the light green paint mixture with enamel thinner. You said that it is almost like a filter. Did you mean "wash"? My understanding (I'm still learning) is that the filters are created by applying various colored paint dots and then brushing them out using a thinner. Can you explain your use of the "filter" comment? Thanks.
@NightShiftScaleModels
@NightShiftScaleModels 5 лет назад
Thanks John. Well, you're partially right. Blending oil dots over a surface (so called "fading" or simply "oil dot technique") adds more variety and faded appearance to a surface. Because it changes the color slightly, it is, indeed, a type of filter. But the most common idea behind a "filter" is a very thin paint mixed in roughly 90/10 ratio (90 for thinner, 10 for paint) brushed evenly over the entire model or specific parts which you might want to change (hue, saturation). I don't use filters very often, and haven't used them in any of my videos so far. When I was referring to a filter, I meant that 90/10 thinner/paint ratio. So the first speckling mixture is very, very thin.
