Great tips. I was never interested in light painting, until now. So I would have never thought of moving far left, then far right, then down low, or highlighting texture at an angle.

I enjoy both your video explanations and how to do the light photographing, and your enthusiasm. It’s contagious and motivating to us (your followers). Looks like quite an interesting place to visit and photograph. Thank you Jim.

I am going to do a light painting experiment using Xavier Nuez as inspiration. What flashlight do you use/recommend? Also do you just recommend just cellophane sheets to cover the flashlight for colored light paint?? Thanks!

There are great photographers, and there are great photographers who can also TEACH! You do both exceedingly well and have quickly risen to the top of my most-appreciated and watched channels! Thanks from Minneapolis, MN! (kudos also for the drone shots - I'm a pilot myself!) Jim

This is a very useful tutorial - thank you s much! It would be really nice to see a tutorial on how you created the final picture in photoshop - Learning how you did the masking and blending of the different exposures would be very interesting.

Just a small correction regarding the inverse square law, at double the distance there will only be a quarter of the light available (see comment at time 4.15 ish)

Inverse square law: intensity varies inversely as the square of the distance. I. e. If you multiply the distance x 2, then light intensity varies by 1/2 squared = 1/4.

what light do you use for light painting

I really enjoyed this! Thanks for sharing it and walking through the process. Makes me want to try it now. Also does it matter what type of flashlight you're using?

I definitely prefer daylight balanced LED flashlights. In the video, the flashlight that I prefer to use for lightpainting was being used by the video person to illuminate me, so I just held one of the other guy's flashlights to demonstrate with. Was going to show you my light afterward, but I forgot. I'll show it in my next video.

I am wondering the same thing as Loretta Habig. How different would it be using an older incandescent flashlight vs a new LED white light flashlight. Regarding an LED, what lumen strength is good or too much? Loved the tutorial. Definitely makes me wanna go out & try some painting for myself.

Where is the camera throughout the shoot? Does it stay in one spot or are you moving it to other spots? Really good tutorial!

So it’s recommended to use Photoshop to merge different images instead of just using bulb mode and carefully painting for up to 5 minutes?
@darkstan156
@darkstan156 6 лет назад
The problem with 5 minute exposures it adds in a lot of noise to the images. for the best quality of image, multiple shorter exposures is better. and it gets more freedom in post process as you can make mistakes without messing up the whole image. I usually set my camera to arond iso 100/200. Aperture - F8-F11 and shutter speed 4-8 seconds.

Good video, thank you. Just one thing though, at 4.17, I believe the inverse square law gives you 1/4 light amount when doubling the light distance from the subject. Not double distance 1/2 the light, double distance 1/4 the light.

Is it not "every time the distance doubles the light quarters"? Great video

Great job of explaining in a short amount of time. I think that the fill is a little too bright. But what the hell do I know? I've only been doing photography for 50+ years.

I have one question as a newbie with that photography subject. Is this better to use flashlight on monopod, wireless connected to camera or flashlight as you using. I discover that with your source of light is much easier to start and see how the light 'flows'. You can actually paint with that like using brush. When on the opposite way you have short but stronger amount of light and it's harder to see or imagine how it will be. My question is. Which idea is more efficient if we talk about getting more experience in this subject. Great video, you explain everything very easily. Thank you so much:)

Couple of things: How do you adjust for the color temperature of the light? Your flashlight looked like an LED source. I'd think an incandescent flash light would cast a warmer light. Do you correct in camera or in photoshop? Both? I also caught the comment on the inverse square rule (04:15) "every time your distance doubles your light roughly cuts in half". Wouldn't that be "your light roughly cuts down to a fourth"? And while we're on this topic, I wonder since the light source would be only 1/4 as intense on a subject who's distance has doubled, the reflection back to the camera, what the camera records, would fall off again as the subject's (now the light source) distance has doubled again back to the camera. So you get 1/4 the intensity at the subject and then 1/4 of 1/4 (1/16) of the intensity back at the camera. Then I suspect the sensor is not really a linear device when it comes to intensity - the probably have some kind of sensitivity curve. Anyway, at the end of the day, the science only supports the art - a good photo stands on it's own - and I really do appreciate what your doing to help us with our art!

But as you mentioned--we don't have to concern ourselves too much with the science of it. The practical effect is that you need to be careful to spend more time painting things far away from the flashlight and less time painting things closer to the camera.

Very informative tutorial...... all is easy till you mentioned the need for post process and edit work. Computers baffle and scare the hell out of me..... I don't own any editing software - just looking at all those buttons sliders menus and strange icons short circuits my old brain . 💥
