A long-lasting, high-altitude aircraft that can provide observation or communication services akin to artificial satellites is called an atmospheric satellite, or high-altitude platform station (HAPS; also known as high-altitude pseudo-satellite or high-altitude platform systems). They stay in the air thanks to atmospheric lift, which can be aerodynamic like that of aeroplanes or aerostatic like that of airships or balloons. These are mostly unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. While civilian HAPS are radio stations at an altitude of 20 to 50 km above waypoints, for weeks at a time, military drones with high-altitude long endurance (HALE) may fly over 60,000 ft (18,000 m) for 32 hours.
