I've always felt Light's reaction to his father's death was genuine. Probably the last genuine human reaction he had too. I believe Light really did love his family. Or at the very least, his father. He's part of the reason Light has such a strong sense of justice. As for what you said about him monologuing about Mello's name instead of worrying about his dying father - I'll give you that one partially, but I think that was more Kira than Light. Kira wouldn't be thinking about that sort of thing at this time. But it's only after Soichiro dies, that the reality of it really hits him - and we see Light for one last time before the end. I said something similar on another video but, he would have thought something akin to "I really just spent the last moments I'll ever have with my father..begging him to write down a damn *name!"*

Light loved his father but he is a smart and rational person, he gets all that sad feeling from his death but he doesn't let it bother him because he had to plan ahead and that is just the most rational thing to do but most people seem to associate it with him being cold to his father. Light always knew people would die because of his actions and he was mentally prepared for it because that's how a smart person's head works, that's why high IQ and EQ people can be cold and also "heartwarming" at the same time, they get the feeling but they let it go quick so that this feeling don't consumes them

Just a thought, its important to keep in mind that we know Light will eventually die. And even if lives are saved by his actions, eventually Kira will cease to be. And when that happens, what are the consequences? Id imagine it would be similar to the situation you pointed out with american police, but on a larger scale. Once people know Kira is gone, and consequences are gone, crime will shoot through the roof, maybe to even higher levels than they were before. This is just speculation of course, but the power vacuum that will inevitably come will undoubtedly have negative consequences for the world.

The main issue with Lights plan is that HE DOESN’T GO FOR THE SYSTEMS THAT CAN CAUSE CRIME AND MORAL BANKRUPTCY. He had the power to single handedly radically change society implement rules for people to follow. Also the writer of Death Note explicitly stated that LIGHT DOES ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT HIS FAMILY, in fact he sees them as perfect model citizens for his new world.

Here’s what I think: The Philosophy of KIRA as it stands, I can agree with. The problem is Light Yagami. He isn’t single minded focused on a better world, he’s doing it for his own ego. Speaking of which, how would KIRA even go about establishing lazy people? Unlike a Criminal Database, there isn’t really such thing as a “lazy database”, how can you find someone based on them, well, not doing anything? I also doubt people would go out of their way to put up the names of basic lazy people as much as criminals. Just seems like an odd detail considering where KIRA was getting his information from before. I don’t think the same would apply to Lazy people the same way it does to Criminals.

I think your conclusion is based on an unrealistic expectation that anyone in the position of Light must be selfless, and must let go of his ego. But he could not, and that's what makes him much more human-like than just an anime character. In reality, you will find that the more responsibility a person carry, the more egoistic he would eventually becomes. It happens to all leaders and it is realistic.

If L was smarter, he would have waited to make a task force. If he wasn’t childish, he would have immediately left Japan, took his theories and deductions with him, never revealed it to the public. He would have found out about Naomi misora/ or at least discover her death and made partly accurate deductions as to who could be Kira. He could narrow it down, use his influence to create specific situations in which would narrow down who is Kira from the plausible existing pool of suspects (partners and families of the Japan task force) in those specific situations, he would have narrowed down the likely suspects. He would’ve waited, months, possibly years, he’s already established that Kira was childish-whats the best solution to childishness? Maturity. Waiting, taking the time to do ANY rebuttal, at s glacial pace. If L wasn’t egoistical himself, he would’ve played the long game.He would’ve WAITED between Every Reaction. That’s how you handle a child. Sure more criminals would be killed, but better them than citizens/FBI/police force. Light was childish and idealistic, a beautiful human with an extraordinary power bestowed on him, and L was a supposed genius that wants to solves mysteries and crimes, regardless of the result. Light never cared about human life(made apparent from now easily he killed innocent detectives doing their job) and L never cared either ( made apparent by how he found immediately instigating a reaction from Kira more important than strategizing a way to lure Kira out) Two geniuses that truly don’t care about human life, only to elevate their boredom and vy for the moral high ground.

To me the main issue is that I know Light truly became Kira when he started enjoying killing innocent people for the sake of his plan. It´s different if he did it out of a sense of "this is for the greater good" but the moment he laughed, had fun and started fantasizing about killing innocent people just because they got in their way and he "won" against them, that´s the moment I knew "caring for the greater good" was a facade for him to justify his own actions and ignore his own sociopathy/psycopathy/god-complex.

Light and L are two highly manipulative psychopaths with different loose principles and goals to justify their actions who get depressed when they're bored and would die for a sense of purpose. That's why I didn't feel sad when they both died, they died doing what they enjoy the most, facing death for a sweet addictive adrenaline rush. Light was a vigilante and as the first OP song lyrics imply, has a revolutionary sense of justice which is often chaotic, swift and brutal while L represents the authorities fighting to be the exclusive enforcers of violence. They both strive to be leaders of both opposite sides of the battle and take the challenge very personally. Neither of them care about the material conditions and injustices that cause crime to rise in the first place as Light only once wacked a group of degenerate shareholders of a major corporation as a distraction and wasn't that much focused on combating wage theft or imperialism, only surgically amputating the resulting symptoms of the broader issues which in turn ended wars and lowered crime rates. This was all done with a sense of simple reward and punishment without any nuance and as a bonus he can justify playing god.

The narrative of the show made it so that the crime and war vanished due to Kira's actions.... But realistically, I doubt that's actually the result we would get without the interference of the writers... I don't think humanity would start killing itself without a government monopolizing violence either... After all, the government would have to emerge from the same population that is apparently so irredeemably violent That it needs a leash and a whip to keep everyone from slaughtering one another... It's like Light in the show... he kills mostly people who have already been captured by the government... He trusts the justice system enough to capture the right people, but stops them from taking a more measured response... There are a few "criminals" that are extra-judiciously killed in the wild, but most of them are already behind bars, safely removed from society... He only really goes after sitting ducks who aren't really a threat to anyone other than fellow condemned... Nothing he said in the show indicates that he's doing what he's doing in order to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people... everything he says and does indicates that he thinks of himself above everyone else and he wanted nothing more than to use his perceived superiority to exert his power onto the world...

The problem with utilitarianism is that the real world doesn't work like that. First of all, you can't just say Light is "more efficient". He's not, period. You can't just judge and execute people from your nice comfy bedroom. They need to go through a trial, they need to be judged by people who are actually competent and know what they're doing and they must get a sentence that must be PROPORTIONAL to the crime. You don't just kill a thief who stole a candy bar. Why is he considered "more efficient"? Because he killed more criminals? He also kills more innocents than the Government. Second (obvious) point: our democratic society doesn't revolve around maximizing social security: the priority is ALWAYS the individual. It is best to let a culprit go than condemning an innocent. When you're put in front of the moral dilemma: "I don't know if this person is guilty or not, should I do something?",the best thing you could do is not to act. If he's innocent, you've killed somebody for no reason and that's worse than letting a criminal go. You also can't simply say:" Eh, he killed more criminals than innocents. He's statistically right." Human lifes are not statistics. "What about dictatorships?" You can't predict what would happen if you were to overthrow a dictator. Dictatorships are not tyrannical governments most of the time, they are often choosen by the people. Also, in certain areas of the world, democracy is not considered a socially accepted value. Many nations have spent centuries without democracy, they would have a hard time accepting it. If you also take into consideration the fact that Democracy historically developed only in certain areas of the world because of particular economic and social reasons, the idea of overthrowing dictatorships simply by killing people becomes even more delusional. "What about wars?" Do you expect wars to stop just because you're applying "Death Note deterrence?" We tried that kind of thing with nuclear weapons and it didn't really stop wars, did it? Wars happen because of economic and political interests. If you kill the guy who's rooting for the war, he's gonna get replaced. If you kill the replacement, they will find another way to wage war. People don't matter in this type of things. Then of course there is the whole "monocratic power" concept, the fact that society is supposed to rehabilitate criminals, not just off them (just because the government is not actually doing that, doesn't mean we should allow someone to eliminate the idea of rehabilitation alltogheter) ecc...
@esdeath89
@esdeath89 7 месяцев назад
I think it is incorrect to compare nuclear weapons with a death note. because the death note can actually prevent the ruler of nations from starting a war. We also know that no one will start a war against the USA and Russia. So, why the death note won't work.

If Kira started using the Death Note to bump off criminals, then governments would behave very differently. To convict a criminal and publish their name would be to condemn that individual to death. Not wanting Kira to usurp their power, many governments would continue to enforce the law, but hide the records of people convicted of crimes. The result would be a different justice system, but not necessarily a better one. I am also skeptical of the claim that Kira would stop all wars. He would, however, create a world where the individuals responsible for waging wars hide their names and faces as a matter of course. Nations are now run by a shadowy cabal of elites, not even pretending to be democratic. Furthermore, the world would now be divided into nations, parties, and militia groups that are "pro-Kira", who kill their criminals and enemies by publicising their identities and accusing them of crimes, versus those who are "anti-Kira" and oppose such actions. No matter how much the Japanese government denies its connection to Kira, they would undoubtedly benefit from his actions. The anti-Kira faction might even unite against Japan, which they deem to be the source of their enemy. This could get really ugly when Japan's allies, including the US, rally their militaries to defend it. If diplomacy were to fail, then Kira might actually be the cause of World War 3.

Thank you, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this. It’s been a long time since I’ve read/watched Deathnote, so I may be wrong, but iirc the thing about killing lazy people was actually a Mikami thing, not a Light thing. And Light actually totally disagreed with this and wished that Mikami would only focus on criminals. Mikami wasn’t cut out for it, and he quickly went ‘too far’ . That being said, what is ‘too far’ is an entirely subjective thing at the end of the day. Many people probably think that Light went ‘too far’ by killing anyone in the first place, seeing as how nowadays a lot of people seem to think that punishing criminals in general is ‘too far’. Who’s to really say what rules are just and what rules are ‘too far’? Light killed violent criminals, and imo, that is just. Of course, many disagree even on that. You ask ‘what if he took it to far’ and give a lot of painfully cliche examples but.. Light never did any of that. Sure, Light did kill people who were not criminals, but only really when they got in his way and tried to stop him. He never lost sight of his ultimate goal of being the hand of justice in the world, even when he was in the grips of insanity. It’s just that the burden of playing God is perhaps too much for a mere human, and thus quickly took its toll on his sanity. But Light honestly played the role of God better than most people would have. Light’s philosophy was at its core, good. And as you’ve pointed out, it is objectively shown, at least in the manga, that Light DID actually succeed in creating an objectively better world. People can disagree with his means, but they can’t really argue against the ends, which was practically eliminating all crime and wars. Wouldn’t anyone want to do that? The question is at what cost would people be willing to achieve that. Would people seek it if it meant committing mass murder? Light was only seen as evil because he was someone who was willing to do it by whatever means necessary, even at the cost of his own sanity and humanity. Whether of not people people see Light Yagami as a tragic hero or a villain really comes down to whether or not they believe that his means justified the ends. Ironically, in this way L was shown to have a remarkably similar mentality to Light throughout the series, yet people do not seem to see him as villainous. Sure, he doesn’t kill people like Kira, but he does kidnap Misa and torture her, and later tortures Light in a similar manner. He makes it pretty clear that he is willing to catch Kira by whatever means necessary. So honestly I find it interesting that most people seem to see Light as a villain and L as a good guy, because they are both actually very morally complex characters. Personally, I’ve always sided with Light and it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one.

Bravo, I wholeheartedly agree with what you said. It's so disappointing and disgusting to see so many commentators and viewers blindly gobble down the mainstream, corny moralistic perspective that the anime cowardly leaned heavily towards in the end, and they couldn't stop regurgitating the gibberish slogans such as “mass murder bad” without philosophically put in serious thoughts to weight the practical justifications of Yagami Light's vision of justice. Why are people such sheep? I'm not asserting that the viewers have to end up siding with Light's philosophy, you can totally still end up at the conclusion that Kira's action was morally wrong, but by all means this is not a simple philosophical question if you approach this topic seriously. People are just so scared of even imagining killing other people for any greater good, they rather ensconce themselves in the comfort of being on the side of “peaceful”, obedient, lawful citizens, so they can just conveniently brush all their subconscious approval of Light's ideology that they did not want to face or admit, under some cheesy straw man like “Light was egotistic”, “He is just a narcissist” etc. What's even more outrageous, is that those who were psychologically offended after watching the video found relief in collectively legitimizing those straw man arguments in this comment section. Just look at how eager they were at handing out upvotes to those popular comments that provided a quick and dirty verbal defense against the self-doubts after watching this video of having to seriously reconsider your own moral standing with regard to the cost benefit judgements of conducting mass murdering for the benefit of the broader humanity, and just how much courage (or necessary psychopathy) it requires for a person to willingly undertake such task and shoulder the unbearable ethical responsibility.

I could not possible agree more with this, especially the part about L. It's crazy to me how so many people completely overlook the actions L took to try and secure victory while still perceiving him as the hero. Sure he doesn't take it quite as far as Light, but for the person who character is built on trying to bring Kira and his actions to justice, he sure seems to contradict his own morals surrounding the Kira case a lot.

@sleeper123 I actually DID read the manga before I ever saw the anime and I disagree. People are allowed to have different interpretations. L literally tortures Misa, but he’s clearly the ‘good guy’? I guess kidnapping someone and strapping them to a dolly for days in solitary confinement is considered ‘within an acceptable system of morality’ to you. It wasn’t to me, and I found moments like that to paint L as a morally grey character who was willing to win by questionable means, just like Light was. Sure, their questionable means were not the same, and you could certainly argue that L’s weren’t as bad since he doesn’t directly murder anyone (although setting up that decoy that he KNEW Kira was going to kill was definitely debateable..). Both characters are not so black and white as ‘good guy’ and ‘bad guy’. Death Note is full of morally grey characters s as bd honestly that’s part of what I love about it. It’s insincere to think that it’s such a simple black and white story as ‘L good, Light bad’. Light DOES have consideration for others. Just not murderers (well, ones other than himself). He wants to make the world a better, safer place for law-abiding people. And unlike anyone else in the story, he actually succeeds at that. At one point in the manga (shortly after the death of L iirc), it is even conceded that Kira has virtually eliminated violent crime. Regardless of how you feel about his methods, they DID get positive results within the universe of Death Note. Of course, in the END Light must completely lose his sanity and be painted as the ‘bad guy’ because we’ve been taught to see his ideology as ‘bad’ in so much other media. I suspect it would be seen as very problematic by the powers that be in our real world if his worldview was ultimately presented as the ‘good’ side, and that’s really the only reason it had to end the way it did. In a world where the people in power are increasingly telling us that it’s basically wrong to even punish criminals, let alone with the death penalty, we aren’t really allowed to entertain Light’s philosophy. That doesn’t mean that his philosophy is entirely incorrect, though. You’ve just been relentlessly taught to think that it is illogical, but it’s actually not. If every violent criminal was killed, then violent crime would die with them, or at the very least, be greatly reduced. There would be no such thing as ‘serial killers’ or ‘repeat offenders’ anymore. The only problem is that it’s not possible to do that. But in Death Note, it IS possible. Death Note is a ‘what-if’ fantasy scenario. And in that kind of universe, Light isn’t actually wrong.

@sleeper123 Well duh, this entire discussion is opinion. People are allowed to have different opinions. Especially on things like manga/anime. I DID actually read the manga. It’s YOUR opinion that he was totally insane from the very beginning. I had a different opinion/interpretation of it than you did and I’m allowed to have that. To me, it clearly showed a gradual descent of into madness for Light. He was a bit of an aloof genius at the beginning, but by no means insane. There’s no shortage of people with your opinions and either, so what’s your point? I really don’t know why you necromancied my post in the first place. Is it really THAT big of a deal that one person on the internet disagrees with you about a fictional character? As I’ve already said, I had read the manga and I had a different opinion. It’s your opinion/interpretation that he doesn’t care about anyone. I disagree, I think that caring about society as a whole and the greater good IS caring about others at the end of the day. Sure, there are a lot of people he doesn’t care about that most would feel he should. He certainly becomes a total psychopath by the end. But IMO, the descent into madness was a gradual thing that is beautifully depicted in the manga. He took pretty extreme and questionable actions for someone who was supposed to be the ‘good’ guy. But sure, I can see how someone could justify it..The same way I can justify what Light did. If you can argue that L HAD a to torture Misa, then why condemn Light for what he did? They both did what they felt they had to do in order to achieve their goals. And no, L didn’t have much ACTUAL evidence against Misa, hence why he felt he NEEDED to torture her to get that information. His ‘clues’ were always just his own speculations with very little hard evidence to go on. The fact that he turned out to be right is irrelevant; he could never PRIVE he was right, hence why he decided to take all the measures that he did. You do realize that what L did to Light, let alone Misa, would be considered illegal in most countries, right? The US is pretty much the only country that doesn’t see solitary confinement as cruel and unusual punishment. And it wasn’t even as punishment, because he did these things when they were merely suspects, not convicts. Confessions obtained under torture are meaningless anyway. Keep in mind that while you as the reader were certain of their guilt, the other characters were NOT given the same level of knowledge as the reader. For all they knew, Misa COULD have been totally innocent. Would it have changed your mind about what L did if you as the reader would have instead known that Light and Misa were innocent instead of guilty? And furthermore, at the end of the day, who was L and the task force ACTUALLY protecting by going after Kira in the first place? Murderers and other violent criminals. Because when those were the only people Kira was targeting. People who weren’t a) violent criminals or b) people directly trying to stop Kira were completely safe from being killed by Light. Is the side that’s protecting violent criminals REALLY the good side? Is that ACTUALLY for the ‘greater good’? Or is he actually going against the greater good by going against the one who is ridding the world of them? It’s an interesting philosophical question that Death Note raises. It’s disappointing that so many people seem to have seen it as a simple good vs. evil story.

I agree with Light's philosophy, but i disagree with his methodology and am disappointed by his shortsightedness and hubris. Killing criminals to force humanity to be good? That's tyrannical and will result in a mental health pandemic of epic proportions. What Light SHOULD'VE done was eliminate the one's in charge and has the most effect on the world; like politicians, CEO's, and dictators like Kim Jung-un. Continue going after the big fish until society finds its perfect middle ground. And what about an heir? Light is mortal, so the Deathnote would need to essentially be a family heirloom. A birthright passed down to keep up such peace. I mean Light's endeavors requires absolute impartiality. Personal desire can never be involved when deciding the fate of the planet. Everything must be good for everyone as a whole.

I dont think Light was right and I'll explain why. He started off with the mindset "If you're a criminal, you deserve to die." Which already has issues. But he ends up spiraling into the mindset of "If you appose Kira, you deserve to die." This is shown when he kills the FBI agents. These FBI agents haven't done anything wrong, they're just doing their job and living honest lives. They are what Kira says people should be. but because they don't agree with one guy being allowed to just kill whoever, Light saw them all as just as bad as the criminals he was killing.

For the Part 1, I think you are making too many oversimplifications and assumptions. First, homicide just means one human killing another. Unless most of those numbers are murders, Kira would have little to no effect on that. Second, people are not inherently evil. You are assuming that the only deterrent to crime is punishment. Most people don't have murderous tendencies and have desires to hurt others. Even then, most people don't want to live in a world where it is okay to give into those desires. The government has and enforces those laws because most people want them. If humans were as twisted as you believed them to be, the world wouldn't have its current structure. Third, you are using the in-universe result to back-up your claim. Crime dropped by 70% and no more wars are because the author wanted to make Kira look like a net positive. By this logic, Kira was right and a net good... but I get the feeling that you are looking at it from the real world perspective. In that case, Kira wouldn't be nearly as effective. He only has 1-2 people working as Kira at any given moment. Just how many names could they possibly write per day? Would Kira's name spread nearly as well? Would there be more people searching for him? Could his actions really stop all wars? Finally, Kira isn't a government. You liken him as one, but he isn't one. He is just a killer. You talk about how he can fix the medicine situation, but how can he do that? He doesn't have a face or a voice. He can't negotiate anything. He only kills. In addition, he is only more efficient at dealing out punishment... but that's because he skips trial, automatically declares them guilty, and gives them the highest penalty (death). In a theoretic space, Light would be right. However, in a realistic sense, Light would cause more harm than good. In Death Note, we see _none_ of the repercussions to Kira's killings. We don't see him kill any innocents nor do we see any reactions. We don't see how people can abuse Light's judgements for their own gain (since he isn't the one doing trials and making sure he is killing the right people). It doesn't cover how the death of certain individuals would cause other problems and lead to potentially more problems and deaths. To put it simply, you can't just kill all the "bad" people and have everything work out. The world has too many gears.

I personally don’t think light was right, I think his ideals come from a good place BUT were lost to corruption. he took the killings up like a responsibility because someone had to do it, and I personally can somewhat understand it, no I morally don’t think it’s good to kill any person for the crimes they commit because you commit a crime yourself, which puts you in a moral paradox: if you kill every criminal in the world do you take your own life too or do you get the okay? do your good deeds outweigh your bad ones? I think your view on that shows if your morals come from a good place instead of corruption. I thin he inherently wasn’t a bad person, no one is inherently a bad person, but people can always be corrupted. the twisted beauty of morality is that it’s different for everyone. for me, what light did obviously went to far, but if you ask light or a supporter of kira they’d say he what he needed to do, that he did a good thing. the entire argument of if light was innocent is morality and morality, as I mentioned before, is different for everyone, sure there are social morals like “killing is bad” but those are easily twistable depending on the person, the situation and the person’s morality.

The desire to halt crime, by instilling a sense of fear into criminals wasn't a deplorable endeavor. The problem with Kira was pride. He saw himself as above the criminal element. Even when he was putting to death innocent people, in order to protect his own interests, he was making himself an exception to the criminal element. In the end, he was going up against a lot of good and innocent people in order to avoid any personal repercussions. It was hypocrisy, the fact that he didn't keep the moral standards that he set for others, that made him the villain. Kira wasn't wrong for wanting evil to be stopped, punished, and for justice to succeed. But a hero is someone who places their own lives on the line. Kira was self-preserving, and he put himself above others: whether they be good or bad in his eyes. The hero places perhaps the most restrictions and boundaries on himself. The anti-hero is one who does not live according to a moral code, and the anti-hero happens to do some things which look heroic, but he is not the hero. If you take Batman for example. A lot of people don't understand why he doesn't just do what Kira does, but Batman understands that if he doesn't place boundaries on himself, then he becomes part of the criminal element, and regardless of being the greatest detective, if he were to establish himself as anything other than an ally to law enforcement, he would eventually be discovered. He is only given allowance and respect, because he has shown himself worthy of trust. Batman also understands that it is not his role to play judge, jury, executioner, or even God. Batman is allowed to be a vigilante only because he works in conjunction with the GCPD and brings the criminal element to justice, not overturning due process. The downfall of Kira is yet another example of Hubris. One definition of Hubris: an act of arrogance, usually where the hero attempted to assume godlike status. Synonyms: Vanity, Excessive Pride - Self-Confidence, and Self-Importance. In addition, the power that Kira was wielding was not sourced from himself, but from demonic entities. The demonic entities have a pattern of using people, and then those people fall into a snare themselves. Because they are blinded by pride, they don't consider that they too will become victims.

Results is 70% reduction in the global crime rate (and the ending wars claim) is proof that Kira’s methods are an effective deterrent to crime and that he objectively made a change toward a better and safer world. After his death percentage jumped so high. For L it was ONLY a game of mind for N it was ONLY a puzzle, I think I don't have to talk about Melo. EXAMPLE: For example, if you imagine that you had a small child, and when he/she was in kindergarten and one day a terrorist would enter this kindergarten threatening to destroy everything or/and kill everyone and at that moment he would die at the hands of Kira (like the first liquidation of the criminal Light ) wouldn’t you be at least grateful to Kira for the fact that your child is alive?

In the end Light is a hypocrite. If he simply stuck to killing serious criminals (e.g. murderers) then there may be an argument on if what he is doing is right or deserve some understanding/empathy. There are three points to his hypocrisy. 1st is that he killed police or potential witnesses who could reveal his identity. To justify this then it is to also justify or absolve a criminal who shoots and kill police officers who are trying to catch them or killing a witness who'd seen their face. 2nd Is that he says that he claims he only targets serious criminals. There are a several instances where criminals of petty crimes are targeted by him. The criminals he killed while studying/eating chips and the thief and con man who helped catch the corporate kira. These people may have been criminals, but their crimes doesn't warrant a death penalty. 3rd Is that he is an accomplice to the crimes and murder of the corporate Kira. He deliberately arranged for the note book to be given to somebody to use it to kill rivals for their lust of power/profit. Many innocent people died from this. Unlike those on the first example they were not trying to catch Light or threat to him. It is no different than providing a criminal with a firearm knowing and wanting them to use it to innocent people. This is not to mention that he has effectively decided to make himself judge, jury and executioner all in one and bound to end up killing people falsely accused of a crime. After all, he is just judging a person's guilt and circumstance from 20 second news clips. If it's that easy to judge then why do we have courts and trials? Have judges decide a whole case based on the channel 7 news highlight and be done with it. If Light had any integrity he should have also been putting his own name in the note book.

Light was doing the right thing by killing “ACTIVE” criminals. Throwback to the first episode where he killed a man holding children and teachers hostage at a daycare centre. Him putting his integrity in to question if he himself would be a murderer is good to acknowledge but at the same time it is better that it had happened to protect the lives of more people that could’ve potentially died, especially if that person had intent to commit homicides. He never had intentions to kill smaller scale crimes in the story as those are petty crimes. This would’ve been good if he didn’t kill innocents in the way of his plans unfortunately. Nonetheless, would he have needed a reason to kill those people if they left it be?

Light allowed his ego and superiority complex to make him complacent. He quite clearly has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and was always going to end up getting drunk on power. It is also why, in Batman: Under The Red Hood, when Jason Todd asks why Batman didn't kill Joker for murdering him and suggests that it might be too difficult to cross that line, Batman responds as follows: "NO! GOD ALMIGHTY NO! It'd be too damned easy! All I've ever wanted to do was kill him. To expose him to every horrific torture he's dealt out onto others, then finally, end him. But if I did it, if I went down into that place, I'll never come back." Anyone who believes they are killing swathes of people for the greater good of the world will always have a likelihood of succumbing to megalomaniacal behaviour and justify intensifying their campaign.

As you said light saved more people than he killed and he saved innocent people. This the death note did good not damage to the good. Unless you choose not not count good people living as a good thing. Of course if you don't count innocent peoples lives as valuable then of course he did harm but then you must say that good peoples lives doesn't matter and sure you can think that if you want. In the end light was good for the world not bad. That's an objective fact as you yourself stated. Even if you don't like it, that's on you not valuing the lives of innocent people you don't know. Sure the death note might be bad in itself and yes we were lucky it wasn't hitler that got it. You can say the same with anything ever made. Anything can be used for good or evil.

Kira was never right. This is literally the point of the manga. The biggest problem with Light is that he tries to use moral relativism as his main defense only for it to prove just how objectively wrong he was, not because of the ethics, but because he attempted to force his subjective morality as something objective, showing a blatant contradiction. In a world that blatantly lacks an objective form of justice, Light attempting to force it is therefore objectively incorrect, not necessarily cause it's unethical, but because it's contradictory. Therefore, it comes down to the fact that a murderer who murders in the name of justice is still a murderer. Nothing more, nothing less

Honestly couldn't finish the video. Your logic is pretty deeply flawed on several counts: 1. A single person doesn't have the ability to administrate an entire nation alone, effectively, without a massive amount of assistance. 2. Governments aren't the _only_ reasons why people don't murder. In fact, they're not the *primary* reasons people don't murder. The PRIMARY reasons the ordinary person doesn't murder people is because they find it morally and personally objectionable...not "well I'll be punished." In fact, most ACTUAL murders take place under circumstances where a calm and rational person would recognize they're virtually guaranteed to get caught and prosecuted. 3. For your utilitarian logic of investing power in Light to assure a crime-free "utopia"...what happens as soon as Light dies? Potentially catastrophic upheaval. By comparison, in a Democracy, the biggest thing that happens if a leader dies is a state funeral, no substantial power vacuum is allowed to take hold...which for better or ill, does a better job at supporting the "stability" you proffer as a benefit.

I won't respond to each point, it's not like I disagree with u completely, bit if there were no laws against killing, and people weren't religious, I bet so much people would drive on red lights and run people over no mercy, 3 factors for a person scared of killing, is jail, social image and how people will see you forever, and religion and afterlife punishment, if you takeout those factors we never know, not saying people would start cutting as that might grow them and traumatize them but since running over and using bombs, isn't as much bloodshed as say cutting (cars are still bloody ofc) then i feel like people wouldn't care as much, This message isn't really a counter just something to think about, personally I enjoyed the video

I'd like to sympathize with Light, I would, but it's just not justice. Studies of capital punishment in the US reveal that given all of the trials, appeals, years of court appearances, and interrogations we still get the wrong person about 4% of the time. I say again, after all the trials and guaranteed appeals we still get 4% the wrong people. I don't think you can devise a system of execution that doesn't kill innocent people, and Light's margin for error has to be MUCH bigger than that if he's not even giving people a chance to plead. I know people will give the "greater good" arguement but just imagine something like that happening to you or your family. It doesn't take much to be marked a criminal in any society.
@errwhattheflip
@errwhattheflip Год назад
There's no objective form of justice. That's Death Note's main theme, and it structures itself almost like a debate between different perspectives, each one having their own perspective. Light being utilitarian, and L basically believing in Injustice Theory. What Light did could be seen as genuine justice in some eyes. He managed to lower crime rates by over 70% prior to his death. That's a monumental accomplishment

I just finished the anime for the first time (sorry, I've been busy) in 2 days and let me tell you.. 1st half? 10/10 with L and Light.. 2nd half? 7/10 with a mind-numbingly boring pretender in Near that somehow outsmarted Light despite him being nowhere near as smart and adaptive as L was. The writers of the Manga and Anime I guess clearly didn't not know how to end the series and did things that betrayed the characters. Light became careless, Misa became nothing more than a punching bag, the entire task force turned on Light in just a few minutes when he was the prime suspect of L for literally weeks and didn't lose faith in Light.. there was also no definitive proof or reason for them to suspect Light anymore except for some explanation that didn't make sense. And that describes the 2nd season in a nutshell, a bunch of "Ah but you see" moments that aren't nearly as well planned or thought out or have any reasoning behind them like with L and Light. I was so disappointed in the ending and not because I wanted Light to win but because L deserved to get the victory.. bottom line? 2nd half was pointless, it should have ended in the rain with L showing Light that he caught him.

After L dies the show becomes boring and I don’t watch that part anymore (aside from maybe the last episode) on rewatches
@IIIISai
@IIIISai Год назад
@@stevettebobbie1314 I think the orange sunset matches light but the greyish dark green rain scene matches L, maybe what happens is When Light kills L in that rain episode, L actually had a recording all on the building where he died, rem was in the building when that happened, so The camera would show Ls name being written with a floating pencil since rem can't be caught on camera, too tedious to rewrite a scenario that makes sense, but I had another idea,when L dies, his body is placed in an ice chamber like captain america, so the show second half plays out the same, and theres a death eraser, it's an unused thing the writer threw away, near erases Ls name in the deathnote, and opens the ice chamber, L is the one who ends up beating Light in the end

The problem with this argument is that Light kills people based off of what he sees and reads on Articles and the Press. What if someone accidentally murdered another and pleads guilty out of guilt, or a murder that was done based off of emotion or self-defence? Why do they have the right to die under Kira's law? Taking into consideration the delivery of information that may or may not even be factual, the information provided to Kira can easily be misconstrued as one individual - who truly killed in self-defence can be considered as a murder by public opinion or even misunderstood as murder by the Police, only for it to be proven as self-defence through court. Kira kills them as soon as he sees murder (or any other crime) + name without considering the situation that took place at the time of the crime. Nor does he consider mens rea and the actus reus of the criminal - which matter greatly when it comes to the act of the crime. Kira's law works as guilty before proven innocent, which is not an ideal form of justice.

I think when Mikami announced the eventual killing of lazy people he didn't mean literal laziness. I think what he meant was "If you can contribute and make someone else's life better, you should", such as hooking someone up with a job, or offering money or services to people in need. So it's more of a, "If you sit back and watch the world burn I'll burn you first" kind of rule.
