Today, an on-the-spot, user-friendly, immunoassay approach - the LightDeck MINI Algal Toxin Testing System - is available to meet needs for easier quantification of multiple cyanotoxins in one quick and easy test. A raw-water sample is added to a tube containing a dried reagent pellet and thoroughly mixed. The resulting sample/reagent mix is then loaded into an inexpensive, factory calibrated, laser-waveguide test cartridge. The loaded cartridge is then placed into the reader, which generates numerical values of extracellular cyanotoxin concentrations in just 10 minutes. Total cyanotoxins (extracellular and intracellular) can also be measured if algal cells are lysed (ruptured) - using mechanical means or repeated freeze/thaw cycles - to release intracellular cyanotoxins into the mix before testing.
