Flexlite Air! One of the best pieces of kit I take! I've had mine for 5 or 6 years now, going strong. While reevaluating my load a few years back i thought about dropping those sweet 15 ounces, but after a 10 or 12 mile day and having that wonderful chair to recover in there is no way I'd leave mine at home! Good choice Mark!

This chair definitely should be in the conversation more. I’ve had mine for a few years now. It has helped me so much at the end of a long day to take the strain off my back and truly relax. That doesn’t happen sitting on a log or a rock! Just always look for firm, solid ground to sit it on.

Thanks for the video. I bought the exact chair earlier this year and was recently considering trading for an "upgrade" to the helinox. You convinced me to keep it. My main concern was the side to side makes me feel like it is a little more fragile. But hopefully that is not the case and otherwise I'm perfectly good with it. I found the same also...I think it is the lightest one out there.

Just don’t forget that the feet of the chair sink into the ground. My chair zero sinks in. Maybe you can find a DIY base for it. Maybe tyvek and duct tape.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 10 месяцев назад
I have noticed that, but choosing where to place it helps. I have seen the ground cloths for the Helinox, I'm sure you could do a tyvek and duct tape home version pretty easy.

I agree on not liking Nemo Moonlite. I ordered it from the REI website and as soon as I received and sat in it I was heading to REI to exchange the thing. I tried the Helinox Chair Zero and it felt like it was pinching my hips together. I did end up getting the Flexlite Air. Should have went to REI in the first place instead of ordering online.

It is nice having an REI close enough to be able to go try out the chairs like I did. I really wanted to like the Nemo, but it was bad!

I'm always bummed out with the REI options available in the US. For some tax reasons REI won't ship to Australia. I ended up with a 1kg $40 cheapie for my son, and the Chair Zero for me at $170!..... That's what 500g costs in AU.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 10 месяцев назад
Ouch, $170 for the Chair Zero is just wrong!

Nice vid Mark. Wish you a speedy recovery! I'd be interested to hear what's the advantage of this chair over a hammock chair. I got the Flexlite Air at REI's Memorial Day sale back in May. It's crazy light but not as light as my DIY chill hammock, which doubles as a gear sling at night. I'm a traditional backpacker so, not a gram counter by any stretch, but I always pack my chill hammock wherever I go, even on day hikes. For me the Flexlite does have a place. I bring it on camping outings where there's very little mileage to cover, and the whole point is to hang out with friends, get a campfire going, eat something good and drink some spirits. Most of the time others end up using my Flexlite Air because I'll be between two trees enjoying my chill hammock. However, on dedicated backpacking trips, I just bring the hammock. The chair stays home. The extra weight is my main concern but also the fact that my chill hammock already takes care of my comfort needs. The Flexlite wouldn't add anything extra.

one advantage is you dont need trees to use it.
@RicMor200
@RicMor200 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, that's kind of a given, but I understand that Mark is for the most part the hammocker type, and hammockers have a way of always finding trees, especially on the East Coast. I can see that out west it might be a challenge, but even then, I've never had a problem hanging a hammock in UT or AZ.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 10 месяцев назад
The tree thing does play a part in it, but it's also just the ease of setup and being able to stop any time, not just when the trees look good for it. Also, this last trip if I had the hammock chair, it would have been a nightmare since when I stopped I was looking to set up the chair in direct sunlight for a reprieve from the mosquitos, hammock chairs are almost always going to be in mostly shade.

I think once you hit 40 a camp chair is an essential piece of gear. I'm on my second chair zero. I broke my first one because one of the legs sunk in soft ground and broke at the joint. On my new one I bought the optional ground sheet to solve that problem. I find it a good compromise between comfort and weight. My only gripe is the price; $150 for the chair and another $30 for the ground sheet. The REI chair definitely has the advantage there; if my current one bites the dust I'm replacing it with the REI. I pretty much always keep it strapped to the outside of my pack so setting it up to take a break is never a hassle. As far as electrolytes go; Kyle Hates Hiking turned me on to LMNT. Him and a few other backpacking RU-vidr's have a code where you can get a sample pack of all their flavors for like $5 (shipping). You get like eight packs for five bucks; not bad. They're pretty salty which takes a little getting used to. But they have no sugar or artificial sweeteners, plenty of electrolytes, potassium and other essential vitamins, and they're only 10 calories.

I'm starting to see how valuable a chair can be. I used to bring the hammock chair quite a bit, but it's different than having a chair you can set up anywhere.

What about your old hammock chair? Is it better than that?
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 10 месяцев назад
I like the hammock chair, but you have to have trees available and positioned the way you want to sit. This just makes it easy regardless of where you are and what you have around.

Also, the hammock chair, since it sets up with trees will most likely be in shade. This last trip that would have been horrible since the only relief I got from the mosquitos was sitting in direct sunlight.

It is 16 oz. Your scale us not calibrated and .07 oz is insugnifinite.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 11 месяцев назад
There are several other channels that also have the REI under 16 oz. It’s more about the fact that it’s at or below claimed weight while the Helinox is over claimed weight.
