Lighting a smokeless coal fire with two kindling pieces and one firelighter

Quite often I see people using a lot of kindling and multiple firelighters to light a smokeless coal fire. Sure that's one way to burn that awkward to light coal, but the cost easily adds up to the equivalent cost of a bag or two of coal each month.
Most smokeless coal in Ireland is manufactured in an ovoid shape that resembles charcoal, making it easier to handle and does not require a stove riddler. Despite the charcoal shape, this coal is not wood based and not suitable for barbecuing on, a question people often ask me that have never seen ovoid shaped coal.
This video shows my preferred method using just a single firelighter and two pieces of kindling, in this case two sticks from last year's pruned bushes.
You can make your own kindling by buying a hatchet and a bag of logs. You'll end up with kindling for about a third the price of bagged kindling.
For a faster fire, I recommend stacking the coal up like a pyramid using tongs. To keep this video short, I used a shovel and poured the coal around the lit area to avoid dislodging the kindling.
The following is my review of this Stanley Erin stove:

Wow, I'm new to this, had the multi fuel stove for 12 years but my husband always lit it, I never watched how he did it, he passed away last year so I've had the stove refurbished, serviced and chimney swept, just spent 40 minutes trying to light it, no luck, found your video, did what you did and hey presto it's lit, so thank you

Keep it simple. Either a few bits of kindling with a firelighter, get them going then start to lay the coal on top or the other way round as in this video. The key is air flow from beneath to get it going and then to burn the coal. Once it’s going you can experiment with the air flow controls to see what suits you best. If you burn wood then the air has to come from above so you close off the lower airflow and open the top one. Check out Zachary Sweeps channel for really good tips and advice. Best of luck with it. 👍🏻

thank you Sean . I watched this before and it helped me a lot . I recently moved house and between this and my own figuring things out this is my method and it works great even in times of low air pressure I use this in a Stanley Comeragh / super 90 Range . first of all the cooker has to be kept clean pulling off all the covers and give it a good intensive clean with the tools that come with the cooker even down the side of and under the oven . coal is bad stuff for clogging up everything with soot so I wont be buying it any more anyway its way too dusty and messy and small little bits its just a pain . I use a mixture of smokeless nuggets just like Sean and seasoned blocks of timber and well seasoned turf . ok hear is what I do every morning when I get up . clean out the fire box . empty the ash tray . stuff a couple of sheets of news paper scrunched up x2 up the elbow on the flue pipe to warm the flue up . I then place a piece of fire lighter dead centre in the fire box and place a block of timber in front and another behind it then I place smaller blocks of kindling of about 1 inch to 1 1/2 in square that I chop myself from the bags of blocks I buy . I dry them out in the storage box directly underneath the fire box . I leave a gap between them usually 4 pieces with another 4 placed parallel with the big blocks then 2 more blocks on top then 3 common sized shovels of nuggets placed in carefully with the tongs . then I sit down and watch the clock all day until its time to light her up ok an attempt at humour : ) . depending on the weather at light up time I pull the litter door with the circular damper off again light the news paper put back on the door and take a 1 inch square of fire lighter in the tongs light it hold it up directly under the fire lighter in the fire box to set it alight then place the other bit in to the fire box and close the door . I leave both dampers fully open to start with for 20 or 30 minutes until its taken off well then close the bottom damper to 1/3 open and the top cracked about half an inch . its good for 3 or 4 hours then another shovel of nuggets then after another couple of hours 5 or 6 sods of turf and that's it . house is still warm in the morning . I only need to clean the cooker every couple of weeks since I got rid of the coal .

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor Год назад
A poor draw could be due to a cold chimney and not enough ventilation, particularly if you have a vented tumble dryer, cooker hood and bathroom fan, etc. operating simultaneously or a blocked vent. You can try lighting the fire well in advance of operating anything that vents air outside such as the cooker hood fan. Once the chimney warms up, it will have a much stronger draw. If it's a recent issue, there may be excessive soot build up in the chimney.

A little bit of smoke giving off at the start. How would that work in a smoke controlled area like cities? Thereason we switched to smokeless coal was because the neighbour kept complaining about the smell from us burning wood, on an open fire, which l now know to be against the rules however l do believe you are allowed to use kindling to start a fire but onlywhen you start it. Our neighbour even complained about the kindling. We now use a man made log in a bag that you light. We surround it with smokeless coal, but it does take about an hour to get going but it is well worth it and no complaints from neighbour.

Very nice video indeed. I've just ordered my stove. Very excited about burning coal, will bring back memories as a kid. How long do you find this fire burns for when you do this method?
@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 8 лет назад
+Aidy Wellock It burns for roughly three hours with a full bucket of coal with the thermostat on 2.5, as ours heats the radiators If we put it down to 1, it will burn for 5 hours or overnight on 0 with the radiators running lukewarm. Generally we just burn a bucket in the evening as our house maintains the heat pretty well during the day even with the oil burner set to hot-water only, i.e. drops to 19C by the time we light the next fire. We had the walls pumped and extra insulation put in the attic. On frosty and very windy cold days, we increase to a bucket and a half, which lasts about 6 hours. Once the radiators are hot, the burn rate slows way down.

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 8 лет назад
+Dean Arnold As far as I'm aware of, kindling is generally permitted as long as it's just used to light the fire and a small bit of white smoke from the chimney is unlikely to attract attention of an inspector, compared to the smelly grey smoke regular coal gives off. For a wood fire (e.g. logs, blocks of wood, etc.), the stove must be suitable for wood burning in a smokeless zone - It should mention in its manual, otherwise try contacting the stove manufacturer.

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 8 лет назад
+David Meyer I'm not actually sure how this coal (Ecoglow) is manufactured or what it consists of other than that the coal man said it is suitable for both closed stoves and open fireplaces. I recently changed to Ecostove, which the local coal man also carries. Its nuggets are a little smaller (egg size) and are for closed stoves only. They produce less smoke than shown in this video when lighting, however, they don't produce as bright flames as the coal in this video. After about two hours of burning, the coal mainly glows with just a few small flames. Anthracite is so far the most unusual coal I've burned so far which is a smokeless coal also for closed fireplaces only. It looks like regular coal (irregular shape pieces), but needs plenty of kindling to light. Once lit, it burns with mostly blue flames and would easily be mistaken for a gas fire.
@brikkijim

I've never seen coal like that before. they look like charcoal briquets for the bbq.
@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 7 лет назад
Indeed, however, I certainly wouldn't want to try barbecuing with these! They are heavier than charcoal nuggets, but I'm sure would be easily mistaken if let's say placed in an unlabelled bag next to the barbecue. Since posting the video, the coal delivery service now has smaller egg shaped smokeless coal. The bigger nuggets in the video are intended for burning in open fireplaces and give of a small amount of smoke during the lighting process. The smaller barely don't smoke at all and the glass remains clean.

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 2 года назад
It's called "Eco Stove" here in Ireland, sold in 40kg bags: mclaughlinscoal.ie/mclaughlinsfuels/our-products/ Both this and Eco Glow are formed into round briquettes, probably using the same type of machine that makes charcoal briquettes. Eco Glow is easier to light, but I had problems with it staining the glass, so have switched to Eco Stove since. According to our local coal supplier, the "Red Flame" product on that page is anthracite in its raw form, i.e. the more familiar irregular shape smokeless coal.

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 7 лет назад
The smokeless ovals we get seem to be quite tough. For example, I can drop them on the concrete ground outside and they remain intact. The do chip, but I reckon it would be difficult to split them. Since posting the video, the coal service has started carrying a stove grade smokeless and the ovals are smaller than what's in the video, about egg size.

I have been making a wood fire then after about 45 mins and the larger logs burning well and start to add the coal and this works but it makes the room too hot. However a benefit is the furnace is so hot it cleans the soot from the glass. I am really surprised your method does not cover the glass in soot straight away, I will try it tonight.

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 5 лет назад
I haven't lit an open fireplace in a long time, but reckon it would it light the same as there's plenty of airflow all around. I suggest using 3 or 4 kindling pieces to speed up the lighting process. If you never used the fireplace before, check that its chimney has been recently cleaned (ask the previous owner) and that it is open (e.g. no chimney balloon, newspaper, etc. stuffed up inside by the previous owner). Another test is light the end of a rolled up piece of paper in the fireplace, blow the flame out so it smoulders and that the smoke gets drawn up into the chimney.

@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 8 лет назад
+Paul Malone Although I'm not in a smoke-controlled zone, we only burn smokeless coal as the regular coal quickly coats the boiler section above the stove which in turn reduces heat going into the radiators. We burn wood occasionally, but mainly from old chopped down bushes left to dry. At the moment, we're burning about 1.5 x 40kg bags of smokeless coal a week to fully heat the house (4 bedroom bungalow) and the oil burner heats the hot water cylinder only. If you can get wood or turf cheaply in bulk, that would be worth considering also particularly if you like to have more flames in the stove, although you would need to load the stove every hour or two, compared to every 4 or more hours with smokeless coal.

+Seán Byrne tnx Sean. We will be using the stove to heat water and house, although I can turn water thermostat down during the day as hot water is mostly needed in the evening. I am in a 4 bed semi d so I'd probably use more fuel than you but the smokeless along with some dry hardwood might be a good option. great video just tried your method and successful 👏..with a multi burner that I have what is the best setting for the air flows top and bottoms ..I normally have top flow on half and bottoms shut ? am I doing this right ?
@theirisheditor
@theirisheditor 7 лет назад
Normally I leave the top and bottom dampers half-open when lighting the coal. On windy day, I'll generally leave the bottom damper closed or partially open. Generally it will light fine with the bottom damper shut even on a calm day, but takes longer for the coal to fully light. Once the fire is lit, I just leave the top damper open slightly and adjust the bottom damper according to how hot I want it to burn. For wood burning, the dampers need to be operated differently. The bottom damper should remain closed for both lighting and burning. So in this case, we open the top damper half way for lighting the wood and then adjust the top damper according to how hot we want the fire to burn. As far as I'm aware of, dedicated wood burning stoves don't draw in air below the grate.

I roughly had about 8kg in there - A 40kg bag typically lasts 5 days. The most we've gone through is two 40kg bags in a week such as during a stormy frosty week. The stove has a boiler which heats the radiators, so it heats the full house in addition to the living room and we have oil heating that runs for an hour in the morning. For a non-boiler stove, I reckon it would need just 1/3 the coal for same room.

@@accomplishanything9103 A sheep ? Are you stupid? I am the most ANTI sheep you could find, Live however they like ? Even if their smoke pollutes the earth and blows into other people's houses who don't want to smoke or have the smell of it ? The true sheep is YOU not me, I am well versed in how this society is controlled by the elite, I know all about the Rothschilds and the Elite and pretty much all that most people who research like I do... Unlucky with that insult attempt though.
