Legendary Jeet Kune Do instructor Paul Vunak will demonstrate to you the what to do if someone blocks you in a fight. This self defense video discusses Bruce Lee's revolutionary approach to martial arts and teaches self-defense techniques that involve intercepting and adapting to different energies in combat situations.
00:00 Bruce Lee revolutionized traditional Asian martial arts by introducing interception and energy drills to overcome the limitations of blocking techniques.
01:11 Jack's early blast forces opponents to close their eyes and raise their hands.
01:32 A new self-defense technique involves destroying the nerve on the arm to allow for head butt, sneeze, and elbow strikes.
02:22 Jack's energy requires a variety of traps to be used in order to succeed.
02:50 Understanding and adapting to different energies in martial arts is crucial for success in combat situations.
03:50 Learn how to trap your opponent's hand and read their energy during a fight.
04:59 Destroy the barrier on both sides to head butt.
05:57 Paul Vunak shows how to use lateral motion for an eye jab and headbutt, leaving the opponent's center line open.

I met Paul at Minnesota KALI that a good friend of mine, Rick Faye was the owner and instructor. Paul has an earned gift of being able to "teach" in a way that is quickly and understandably absorbed. Great guy. Super talented. Tough as nail. Fearless!

Paul Vunak is one of the few excellent teachers I have followed since video tapes. Paul Vunak..Dan Inosanto..Steve Fristo....all a great influence and a relaxing experience. When I first started Kali, my teacher told me to wait 5 years and then watch Paul Vunak. I was rushing things . Now I understand.

@@NormanScyth Eye jabs, Head butts, groin kicks, oblique to the knee? Doesn't work in combat? Redirecting hands and grasping or coming over the top for short strikes or grappling, never works? Most dudes in prison never fought on a ufc card either, but can hurt you bad, just the same. Mma is sport. Tough and many are skilled, but its a Sport. WAYYYY too many situations in real life violence that a sport can't cover. Been in a few, you probably have too. NO REF, NO 8 WEEKS TO PREPARE. @@bronzetiger6360 your right. for example a good low blow will stop the opponent and force the ref to break the fight for a moment of course that is not the case in the street. but I will have you also ponder that majority of "self defense" instructors have no real experience in knowing a fight. especially against a trainee person. most don't even spar! know what its like to get hit fall, feel a bad body shot or kick, fight on no gas tank etc... very important
@bronzetiger6360

@@equilibriomartialmind777 Hasn't been my experience. Most of the dudes I trained with were inner City Black Males(Baltimore, DC). Due to the environment AND their character, combat prowess was Never an issue. As I myself have experienced, you can't teach combative skills to people in "Disadvantaged areas", without "proving yourself " a time or TEN🤣.. .Thats why I don't pay these "internet mma groupies" any mind. People have been effing people up WAYYYYY before these chumps ever heard of Vale Tudo,Shooto, ufc, Panrase, Pride, Showtime, IFC, Superbrawl, Rings, Absolute Fighting.....need I go on🤣? Military Bases, Penal Institutions AND Dojos, have Always had their fighters. To assume now, because of some mma sport shows that "everyone else" is bogus?? Foolhardy and Dangerous.
@equilibriomartialmind777
@equilibriomartialmind777 Год назад
@@bronzetiger6360 I understand your point. But if you wish compare military to these modern gladiators it's a no Brainer. Watch these ufc dudes go spar marines and other military personnel different striking level and fight in period. Now killing well now your going into ancient combat systems but again my point is that these new fighters have different advantages that let them acquire various skills, its not a karate guy anymore per se but he mixes in with muay thai, boxing, maybe Sambo or Sanda etc... I'm just saying few instructors really go and compete. If your martial art is good 4 oz, or 8 oz gloves won't change it that much. You can use oblique in mma very useful for me being shorter then most. Or low side kick to the leg, using pak sau, or even bong in boxing sparring with 16oz gloves works! Not debating that those arts don't work. But many wing chun or even jkd don't properly spar or even spar against say a pure boxer or kickboxer etc... as soon as a traditional martial artist spars not 100% of the time ! But damn near they get smoked by a basic muay thai practioner of a 1 year learning experience.

@@kevincopeland935 that should be explained in the video Kevin (the reference point). And I mean no any lack of respect but I think it's more "charming" for the view show things like this instead of explain things for what they are (as he did with a video when he showed what a knife could do to your flesh but not always knife wielders tends to be such a good cutters). Paul Vunak is a good instructor but he insist against blocking when sometimes is a natural thing to do. That clash of wrist could be considered as blocking too which not always is the best or an unique response of course, even the best. But I've blocked, I've seen people blocking, I've seen direct grabs, dodging, avoiding, you name it. And I have years and years training and working in security and as bodyguard. That's my experience that's all. When I hear him I agree and disagree with many things. People use clothes which makes sensitivity gets lower. Besides that wrist contact is many times so light in the fencing or arms during the exchange of punches and grabs that I see difficult to do what you said. The answer is you never know.

Interception has been part traditional kung fu practice for centuries so has the right kind of blocking with energy and structure behind it. Correct.. BL did not 'invent' anything. What he did was "Introduce" a 'specific' type of Gung-fu that HE WAS TAUGHT. Several styles of Gung-fu do similar things.. BUT, Bruce took a UNIQUE style of Gung-fu.. Wing-Chun, that introduces a more EXplosive and DYnamic system of movements, and introduced it. People like Paul, capitalize on this 'uniqueness' to focus on themselves.. rather than on the style. This is why Paul.. as a youth and full of potential, LOST.. because he loved, and fought with his 'LONG HAIR'! He was abused by his opponent who grabbed and controlled him by his.. HAIR! @DJAraRealSalsa Год назад
@@philip6419 I don't know about Paul's history but it is worth mentioning that there are other kung fu styles that are as explosive as Wing Chun and there are a good number that are more explosive and powerful too. It is unfortunate that BL did not live long enough to explore other such styles as well as the fine-tuned internal ones elements of which are contained in WC itself but rather 'forgotten' nowadays. As for JKD, again it encompasses concepts that have been present in traditional kung fu for centuries, these include the concept of intercepting which in some styles infinitely more fine-tuned than JKD. The 'be like water' one is also a kung fu one. Even taking what is useful and throwing away the useless is an understood concept in kung fu. In that you learn the style and then apply what is specifically useful to you in combat. Having said that, traditional kung fu masters often adapted what they taught to the shape, size and other tendencies of their given students as in a technique that is useful for tall person may not be so useful for a short one. As a result, traditional sifus would adapt some aspects of their given style to their students. It is unfortunate that as exceptional as BL was, he did not have enough time to really get deep into the Chinese Martial Arts because if he had then I believe he would have become even more exceptional.
@philip6419
@philip6419 Год назад
@@DJAraRealSalsa Actually, BL DID investigate other GF styles. The Chinese are very racist when it comes to GF. The 'Real' Traditional GF was only taught to full Chinese with a very few exceptions. Ip man was pressured by his students to stop BL's training because of this which PO'd Bruce but Ip had WSL continue his training [for a short while as BL left] In America, it is believed his childhood friend Hing Leung taught him the second form.. but when it comes to Wing Chun, BL ONLY knew the 1st form and 67 movements on the Muk Jong. PRETTY impressive what came out of him from just this small amount of Wing Chun. BL's father was well known in the Chinese Opera in NY city and had many connections and In NY, BL was introduced to a SiFu there who was a Master at Praying Mantis and 'Hung Gar' who was the first in NY City to break away from tradition and trained anyone [Gwilos] who had the drive. His name was SiFu Gin Foon Mark and MANY SiFu's were not pleased! SiFu Mark worked as a Chef at the Hilton Hotel in NYC and trained GF at night. Let me just give tribute here to SiFu Mark.. AND to point out, BL DID have access to 'other' styles, thru him. His 1st practice began at 5. At 9 he was admitted to the Shaolin Temple and studied under a Famous monk, Ki Fut Sai who trained him in White Crane, Eagle Claw, Leapord.. and studied Tiger Claw in the HoiJung Temple, Praying Mantis in Jook Lum Monastery and, Moo Gai [gigong/tai chi]. also schooled inMing Kung, Shin gung, and iron shirt, iron palm, dim mak.. etc. In the US he trained PMantis under the renouned Lum Wing Fay, when retiring, turned it over to SiFu Mark. Bruce brought some of this training back to Ip and BL was shown their weakness. I could go on for a while but I wanted to point out, "I" know MA history and have myself been involved for decades and know my stuff. Bruce trained with SiFu Mark, learning MUCH about other GF 'ways'. Wing Chun, IMHO, in its true form is more efficient and brutal than ANY other! Just sayin..

Trapping is a fine motor skill. Fine motor skills breakdown in high stress situations. Gross motor skills like boxing, Maury thai, and grappling do not break down as readily because they are simpler and testable in high stress situations with resisting opponents. I would love to see a video of Vunak doing live sparring against a truly resisting partner and using even just a simple 2-step trapping defense. I wonder if one exists.

I have another suggestion. When you block the strike, grab the wrist and pull it down. Use your other hand and lift up the elbow on the same arm. In an effort to escape the pain your opponent will go to the ground. Then use your hand to twist the wrist. As long as you maintain your grip on the wrist you are in complete control and the fight is over. If your opponent resists, increase the twist to the wrist. If you believe it is necessary you can twist the wrist until it breaks. You can use the wrist/elbow combination to break the wrist, the elbow and dislocate the shoulder. Intense pain has a way of ending the desire to fight. Joint locks are effective no matter how large or strong your opponent is. Accuracy, timing, speed and weight distribution are important. The farther your opponent's arms are from his body, the weaker they are. The less your arms are extended, the stronger they are. As in all things, the key is consistent practice. As you progress, have your partner make moves/attacks that aren't scripted or expected.

In a real fight, the opponent is not gonna pause in their movement, much less their punches when the guy starts his trapping. In fact, Bruce discarded trapping and wing chun since the creation of jkd. Kareem Abdul jabbar described that "Bruce’s style was more a boxing style." And Dan inosanto also recalled when Bruce showed him a later developed jkd and said "looked more like boxing and kickboxing then anything else." However Dan didn’t like the low kicks and the discarded trapping idea and continued to teach not what Bruce had in mind.

@Ana Hernandez This basic approach to fighting is better than MMA for self defense, but the application of it here is worse than MMA, and in fact worse than simple boxing or wrestling. If you want to see an example that works for self defense, check out adam chan's channel. You will notice that when you trap and intercept in real life , you don't try to catch punches from the air, you don't chase someone's arms , you don't strike this way without first turning, off balancing, or clinching the opponent, and once he's in trouble then yes you do throw hooks or throw him. You also need to know how to sport fight somewhat before you can streetfight. Meaning, if you have developed a proper jab and you do actually spar, then yes, you can drill eye pokes and throat shots , and after several months be able to use the in a fight. If you drill them based on some stupid ninjitsu classes...then no.

@adcyuumi
@adcyuumi Год назад
The reason it doesn't fully work in MMA is that matches are timed. It's not a self-defense scenario. When you are under attack from someone who wants to hurt you, they must be much more aggressive than you see in MMA fights - otherwise, you can just back away from the attacker and get away. An attacker is compelled, if they want to force a fight with you, to come in hyper-aggressively and get their hands on you so that you can't back up. This scenario is what Wing Chun is for. As soon as the attacker moves into that range to force a fight, everything Wing Chun does can work REALLY well. It's not a complete system by any means - minimal grappling, no ground game, and terrible to street fight with since it has no long-ranged attacks the way boxing does. But it functions for what it is designed for, which is proactively taking the fight to an attacker that is being hyper-aggressive to force a fight. The moment they back off of you, you don't look to engage anymore with Wing Chun. You get to safety. Bruce Lee was a small but strong man with wickedly fast reflexes, looking for a style that was good in a street fight. He gravitated toward those strengths, favoring in-and-out strikes and kicks that kept him on balance to back away and were hard to see coming. And he TRIED to teach with Jeet Kune Do that every person is different and you have to find a way of fighting that matches your body - except his students didn't have the structured background he did, so it never quite worked. You have to learn the basics, THEN explore once you have a foundation to build from. Wing Chun is a good foundation. It worked for Bruce Lee, after all. As for not working at all in MMA... it's there, and you just aren't recognizing it. Don't look for it when two opponents are boxing/kickboxing each other, circling around the cage. Look for it when they get into a stand up grappling situation. You will see lots of trapping out of some guys there, if you pay more attention. What you typically won't see in MMA after the trapping is a Wing Chun punch - it is a great punch against a regular person, but people who can fight for a living have just an insanely high pain tolerance relative to your typical tough-guy on the street. They can eat punches for minutes that would knock most people out immediately. So the follow-up to the trapping looks different, most of the time.
@78a67h
@78a67h Год назад
@@adcyuumi Thanks for the analysis. I would say that MMA fighters can be as aggressive as they come, they are just apprehensive in their approaches as they know they are facing a trained fighter. Someone who has trained in Wing Chun and trapping will instinctively use that in a situation and wish for the best. I am still not convinced that it is an efficient way to street fight realizing that other systems too have grave weaknesses eg Boxing and Karate offer zero ground fighting techniques.
@adcyuumi
@adcyuumi Год назад
@@78a67h Karate has some ground fighting techniques, mostly limb control and ways to get back to your feet against someone trying to stop you. It is a complete art for the most part, but (like Wing Chun) built for scenarios outside of sport/street fighting. It does depend on the school/instructor(s) a lot - some karate is McDojo (as are schools in every martial art; it's just more common in some than others), and other karate is quality. I started out in karate (35ish years ago mind you) and was not disappointed in it. It is a great foundation. Just add things from other arts, here and there. Ground fighting in a street fight gets you killed, or at least put in the hospital. There are no rules in a street fight, and the only honor found is in jumping in to save your friend who is losing the fight. Nobody just lets someone win. Take it to the ground and you are quite helpless when your opponent's friends jump on you to save their buddy. It's the worst place to be, worse than they guy you just drove into the pavement's place even. And everybody knows this... you stay standing, and you strike. You don't pin people and start wailing on them while they can't fight back, or you get what you asked for. Sport fighting is... it's own beast. About as far from actual fighting as you can go, without removing the violence. You are rested, in peak condition, loose, with taped wrists and gloves to protect your knuckles. All the moves that end the fight quickly are banned - too dangerous. No rabbit punches. No throat strikes. No finger breaking or small joint manipulations of any kind. Etc etc. It's to protect the athletes - and that's fine, I don't mind that. But when people use the term MMA to talk about fighting? That's NOT fighting.
