Join me as I share how to approach the decorative lighting for an open concept room. You'll discover room lighting ideas for this multi-functional open plan room, and how to create both a cohesive and interesting look to the space. If you have an open concept room, such as a family room or great room, or an apartment, with at least two different areas, such as a dining room, kitchen, and living room, the decorative lighting such as chandeliers, pendant lights, and lamps, provide both function and decoration and play an important role in creating the look and feel that you want. We'll explore home lighting design ideas that use both the interior design principles of repetition and variety, and how to use interior design elements such as color, texture, and shape as tools to create a balanced look and feel to your room. In addition to discussing the decorative lighting, I'll also review what other types of room lighting such as overall and task lighting, that are important to lighting up a room.
I'd love to know what you think about when you are deciding on the decorative lighting for your open concept room. Please share your design ideas in the comments.

Excellent Presentation Thank you! I have an L shaped apartment with the dining room to the left and the living room straight. Now I know how to shop! Work from the same collection! Cohesive but each room is special. All the best! I look forward to reviewing more of your interior design programs.

Your videos are so helpful. I love how you explain when and how to tie in fixtures, but not be matchy matchy.

Thank you for the instruction. I am trying to pick out lighting for an open concept living room (ceiling fan), kitchen (2 pendants that are replacing recessed lighting), and breakfast nook (chandelier) and I don't want it to get too heavy if that makes sense. I enjoyed several of the pictures in your montage

That's exciting that you are looking for new light fixtures and how you know what you need for each area! I think knowing that you don't want them to be too heavy, (maybe you are just referring to the chandelier?), is super helpful when you are shopping so that you can avoid anything that may be too overpowering/too large or even out of scale with the room. Take care, Carol

Is it OK to use architectural lighting with a bronze finish (such as a chandelier and pendants from the Hinkley Bolla collection) in an open concept kitchen with stainless steel appliances? The adjoining living room has lamps and tables with with warm bronze/dark gold finishes and a Tiffany-style lamp with cream and green glass. It's hard to know how to coordinate everything.

That's a great question. One way to think about stainless steel appliances is to think of them just as a neutral color, in the background, even though they have a silver finish or color to them. They can even reflect other colors around them. I would think of the entire space overall and what the look and feel it is that you want - overall colors and style. And you can think of your architectural lighting especially, as a an important visual element that reflects the overall look you are going for. If the warmer more bronze finishes work the best for the look of the room then that will make sense and look great. What is the overall look for the space - style and color of the kitchen cabinets, countertops, backsplash and in the rest of the area - walls, fabrics, furniture style etc? I hope that helps. Take care, Carol
